VIVE Controller Touch-pad button FIX

A few months after I had my Vive controllers, i noticed the touch-pad buttons were getting squishy, and unless I pushed really hard on them, they would not work. Since Fallout 4, DoomVR, and a few other games are going to be coming out over the next few months I almost bought two new controllers, however, after reading the reviews I decided against it. Every single review said that within weeks the touch-pad stopped working. Someone even said their new controller didn't work right. Its a known defect and I found a simple fix. I was scared at first but though... why not. why spend $260 when I could attempt to fix them for free. I wasn't going to make a video, but decided to when the video's I found kinda skimmed over a few things. I hope this video helps you!
WHAT YOU NEED
1. Torx 5 screwdriver (Local hardware store)
2.10 Rapid drying glue
3. Tweezers

Thanks a lot for this video, helped me out a lot. This issue started today after olmost 4 year of use. Fixed it within 10 minutes, i added a little bit of glue, and a little piece of paper on top of the glue, this made the trackpad click like it always had. I glued the little black pillar thing with a rubber on top. Thanks for explaining how to open the controller, where to be carefull(Ribons for example) that was nice, i would probably have ripped the thing apart, seeing it opened. For the people following this tutorial, please do yourself a favour and buy one of the mobile phone plastic wedges, made my life a lot easier. I wasnt afraid of damaging the plastics. Removing the under plastic of the sensors, was scary. You realy have to cram it in there, please take your time with those steps.

Just an FYI for anyone experiencing the same issue. I took my controllers apart because they had a dead upper right portion of both pads. However the little rubber disc was exactly where it should have been on both controllers, no slipping. The pad had been worn in with a depression from use. To remedy I used a paper hole puncher to cut out a piece of plastic, I used a milk jug. I then glued the small plastic disc atop the rubber pad using the same glue in the vid. Repair worked great and the controllers both feel like new. Trackpad is 100% functional and controllers are tracking.

Sooo happy I ran into this video within 5 minutes of searching for the symptom of the controller. It showed me exactly what I needed to fix the specific problem with the thumb pad clicking fail that came up last night. Wow, am I relieved it worked too. Was worried about maybe needing to replace the controller, which are pretty costly. Buying a nice simple Cobalt screwdriver set for cheap, which had the T5 screwdriver head was so worth it too. Thanks to the channel husband and wife for putting it together with great detail.

@@michaelfontana4689 I cleaned off the old glue that was sticking on it. I think i used elmer glue back then, applied both ends then I waited to dry a little bit before I put them together. Thanks for the video. It gave me the confidence to fix my controllers after both stopped clicking on the right side of the trackpad. I've only had my vive 3 months so I had to void the warranty, but given that this is such a common failure it wasn't worth waiting 10 days for replacements only to have those fail too soon after. Mine didn't have any little black pads at all so I added a little pad made from 3 layers of electrical tape and now they work fine. I had an easier time of it than you did! Thanks for leaving in all the problems you encountered, really helpful for someone not used to messing with electronics.

Same. My pad appeared to be gone but I believe it was just embedded up inside the hole. Tape technique did the trick.
@DJ_Dett

**If you are watching this, but your pad appears fine**, your pad may be simply worn down. I built up a layer of glue and topped it off with a piece of tape. Some people have used plastic discs cut from packaging, or multiple layers of tape. Whatever you use, be sure to test your pad before you button everything back up!

This video very cleanly showed how to open the controller to examine and fix it (although she did miss the two screws at the lower tip of the controller, where the strap is). I just added a layer or two of electric tape and now it's clicking much better.

Excellent tutorial. I opened up my Vive controller and noticed that the pad was missing entirely! Couldn't find where it went but I salvaged a broken XBOX controller and took the foam material off one of the rumble motors and cut a similar sized piece to put where the pad should have been. Works like a charm!

Both my wands lost their clickey-ness on the upper right side. Using to your tutorial I was able to open both of them to find the pads had simply worn down from pushing too hard. A plastic disk on top of the rubber pads solved the problem and I didn't break anything else in the process! Thank you for demonstrating how to open the temperamental casing.

I am 3 years late, but I can't thank you enough. The right button was not responding and not clicking anymore, so this video helped 100%. (Haven't tested if the tracking and stuff still works, but still) The little rubber thing was tight in place but apparently smashed. I placed a little piece of plastic of the same size on there, cut out from a normal plastic bottle. Worked perfectly. I didn't even have to glue it on, it just stays in place. Perfect stuff

You can also detach the 2 ribbon cables to make it much much easier to reapply the adhesive. You just have to be careful to pull the cables straight out and not at an angle. I also had a lot of issues getting the plastic cover back on the bottom of the controllers, seems like kinda a wonky design. Hopefully the new knuckle controllers they're working on have a better overall design because the oculus controllers have a substantially better design compared to the vive controllers (except for the tracking of course).

AustinAustinAustinOO Which I appreciate but I'd be surprised if HTC turned any kind of profit on the Vive anyway. Designing, iterating on and eventually mass producing the Vive will have cost ridiculous amounts of money. $139 isn't going to the build of the product, it's going to the research and testing involved in producing it.

For those experience controller sync issues with slow blinking blue lights on their old vive controllers, it's due to the orange film or bands not docked in their strip slots or not touching the metallic pieces inside the controller. Both the long film from the middle to bottom of the controller need to touch what looks like the battery and the other is the circular band that overs around the rubber inner piece; that band has to touch he middle metallic part in the center of the controller/under the touch pad. I taped the film to the metal pieces and it synced easily.

Thanks for the tutorial, I have just fixed both my controllers using your method except I needed to add some height to the button to get the "click" back. Unfortunately when I was re-installing one of the covers I tore one of the sensors off :( before I got my soldering iron out I played a few games less one sensor and have no notable tracking issues. I've reached out to HTC regarding this as many people have the same issue and their response was they are unaware (or in denial). I suggested they look into it and they said they will pass this on to the manufacturer as its a 3rd party building the controllers. No way im paying $200 AU to replace a controller $400 AU if I want both. Thanks for the fix lets spread the word.

Thanks for making this video. Offered the info and pointers I needed to fix my out of warranty controller. The only note I'd add is to take care when removing the top of the ring. Not only is it easy to hit things pushing in too far (said in video) but if you're too aggressive you can bend up the plastic a bit without really unclipping anything. My controller works but it has a few more battle scars.
@kikashie45
@kikashie45 5 лет назад
I found a much better way to fix the issue after the general teardown. Instead of removing the small plastic piece and regluing it on, assuming the piece hasn't yet moved much, you could simply apply a small, fitted piece of tape to bridge the gap the plastic appears to have. The plastic piece in my controller hadn't moved, and yet I still couldn't get the right side of the touchpad to click like it did when I first got it. So, I applied a small piece of tape - cut to the size of the rounded plastic piece; and, upon testing, had my righteous click back. You may run the risk of further damage by removing the plastic piece, so I offer this as a more viable fix than gluing it on with super glue that could inevitably fail again and cause further damage to the piece by causing tearing or fusing. I hope that this doesn't sound like im talking over you or trying to undermine what you've done here. I really appreciate what you've shown in this video, as it actually helped me come to the conclusion that it was simply a spacing issue. I hope this helps anyone who is willing to read all of the garble I've written and I thank you, most humbly, for making this video and providing the help you have. Cheers and God bless you and yours!!!!

Dorothy, Thanks for the vid. Both of my son's controllers are exhibiting this problem. I was going to contact Vive to ask how I get replacement parts thinking it was bad switches but this is an easy fix. Looks like they used double sided tape to hold that piece down. FYI, you commented "why is this so dark". You shot this with a white background so the camera is seeing a lot of light from that and reducing the exposure. Black objects with a white background will usually be under exposed.

If you loose the little black felt circle that activates the button, do not worry like I did. You can cut out a replacement square out of another material. I used the clear plastic from the glue packaging for this project, however you mightn't even need to glue it down. The pressure from closing the controller up should hold the piece in place
@skeezerbean1705

Thanks for the video. I've had to refer back to a few times to open controllers a few times to fix this, or a loose cable. The pad that touches the button was infact fine, and I just put a very thin layer of Bondic liquid plastic welder material on the pad and let it cure, and it was enough to add the extra distance for the touchpad to work on all sides again. HTC is quite aware of the repeated issues, but most of the time it seems to happen after warranty expired so they don't care, or people don't want to send controllers back if they ARE under warranty because of the many weeks it will take to get them back which you're stuck without VR during that time.

The screwdriver I bought wasn't long enough to unscrew the two screws on the bottom back of the controller so I had to bend the plastic back as far as I was comfortable doing, put in a wooden skewer to hold it open, and carefully play operation when gluing the black sticker back in. Worked out just fine even though the "I might totally fuck this up" stakes were pretty high.

Thanks, I finally managed to fix it! Used a tutorial before but didn't work - as you showed, I removed the rubber thing and attached it again (it was sticking correctly though), and after resticking it works! Thanks. I followed another vid and almost broke the sensor when putting it back together. I had this problem from the beginning on both controllers. I actually thought the trackpad was only clickable in 3 directions. :D

PRO TIP - When you bond the rubber pad to the controller molding (or your custom shim to raise the rubber pad) be sure to prep the surfaces to get a good bond. 1- Scratch the surfaces you are planning to glue multiple times with sandpaper, or alternatively many times with anything sharp. 2- Lightly wipe the surface with a cotton swab or paper towel dipped in a solvent like alcohol or heptane to clean any dust and oils from the surface. Do not soak rubber or plastic with solvents because it will dry them out and make them brittle and flaky. A couple wipes will do. 3- If using cyanoacrylate (Super/Krazy Glue) only apply the glue to ONE SURFACE. This glue crystallizes instantly on porous and textured surfaces to form a bond but has difficulty bonding to itself after being exposed to air even briefly. Any other glue, follow the instructions but remember to prep the surface to get proper grip. This will give the glue a texture to grip on. If you bond a smooth surface the glue is likely to snap off in one flat plate if too much lateral force is applied. In other words, if you push or pull the smooth glued parts straight the glue will hold well, but if you twist the bond by pushing it to the side (like clicking the button around the edges of the track pad) the glue can easily snap off because it has no texture to microscopically grip to. Speaking from loads of work related and personal experiences

Part of my touchpad doesn't click, but when I opened up my controller that little black pad was in place just fine, yet part of the touchpad still doesn't click. No idea why. Maybe something else in the touchpad broke, I don't know. The actual button on the bottom half of the controller seems to press/click ok. So I have no idea. Any ideas?

@@jessman22446 yeah I found another video where the guy put a thin piece of plastic in there and it started working again. I did the same, and it worked, however it has since come dislodged again. I will have to take it apart again and possibly glue it in place this time.

I'm sure you know this but I solved my floating controller issue by removing all mirrors and covering all reflective surfaces in my Vive room. Worked like a charm.

It was REALLY EASY to take the top off. You need to start at the nose of the controller. Hope this helps.

I lost the tracking (in Rec Room), I tried on/off, and the controller disapeared completely. Before, I had no problem with the touchpad clicking. I used it quite normally (in my memory). Now I notice problems with the click on the right edge. Maybe I used the function rarely or not. I play a lot of Rec Room. There you turn with the touch function without clicking. Clicking on the right side of my touchpad sounds not so good (intensive, click sound) like left etc.. But this black pad is OK, and in the center (???). Btw., I recommend disconnecting the two flat ribbon cables and screw out the whole touchpad (two screws) during the work.

I know I’m late, but if you still use those controllers and haven’t fixed the haptics (vibration), or anyone else has lost them, the broken part is when she points out the wire that was disconnected.6:17 The two bumps are solder points for the haptics. You can try gluing under everything but them and keeping it tight but that will likely break again. If you are careful you can solder them back on but be careful. You could also just buy a new daughter board for that though

Ahh damn it. I knew something was wrong more than the button itself. Thank you for this though, I wouldn't have been able to know without taking my controller apart. But the 2 twisty thin plastics that are screwed to keep the touch pad in place have been snapped in the past. I've never pressed the button so hard to have done so, but I bought my Vive pro second hand, the warranty sticker was still in place so my assumption is that the last owner had a bit more rough play with it. I don't imagine super glue will help with the 2 plastic points being broken. But if all goes well ensuring the rubber tab is positioned properly again on the button. Perhaps it will click normally but remain a little loose. Thanks again. Time for controller no.2 and to hope no damage there... Edit: second controller did not have the damaged plastic but the rubber pad was COMPLETELY worn through by the button. Interesting but still
