Being dumped at Roehampton, all alone, at the age of 6 “might” have contributed to her later mental illness?? Gee....do you _think?!?!?_ I mean, Leigh had the genes for manic depression from one or both of her parents, and that horrible-and ridiculous-separation when she was 6 was certainly a traumatic event, and traumatic events in childhood are the catalysts which cause mental illness genes to “fire.” The English upper classes treated their children with such horrible callous cruelty that it’s mind boggling! I’ve read so many biographies of famous English people, and so many of them were brutally treated and completely ignored. What a mess!!

Caroline Johnson. It is only the minority of the upper classes who send their children away. My first boyfriend had gone to public school at the age of 7. He used to ring his mother every weekend and beg her to let him come home for months. She always refused and it devastated him. Later in life as a man he said it ‘made him’. But i secretly thought it had marked him. I also remember thinking, if i marry this guy and have kids i would lay down flat in the road rather than let him send my children away. He had 8 children by two marriages and everyone was sent to public school. When i heard this many years later i remember clutching my precious three year son to me ( i was a single mum) and thanking God that we never married.

Did that guy just blame a change in location during childhood for her bipolar disorder? It's not the Secret Garden, my man...

It was actually the change in circumstance more than location, as he made quite clear

The English view of parenthood used to be so cold, sending their kids off to school, etc. Has that changed? This snoopy American would like to know.

It happened in America too. My grandfather spent his life in "military schools". As a mother I just can't understand how it doesn't break a mom's heart. Tears getting on a school bus for the day. It's sad. It carried on because she was able to leave her children.... Who knows what went on in their heart and head.

Enjoyed seeing her in Anna Karenina, novel by Leo Tolstoy. If someone liked my comment I would like to State further that Leo TOLSTOY'S grand son Lt.Col.Count Ilia Tolstoy considered me as his God-daughtet and sponsored me to his college at William Penn in Iowa and gave me away in marriage in 1968 and used to say he used to play with Anastasia, the Czar of Russia 's youngest daughter! Therefore I watched all three versions of Anna Karenina and Vivienne Leigh was the best heroine of the three and enjoyed seeing Mel Ferret and Audrey Hepburn in Toldyou's novel "War and Peace"
