i always laugh at those 3rd person shots from vloggers, because you know they had to leave the camera, drive by it, then go back to pick it up. at the same time those shots are awesome and add so much to the video. thanks for doing what youre doing, wish i could.

I appreciate your insight to the tube vs. tubeless debate. For me though, I had two rear tubes fail on my Africa Twin. One at highway speeds the other at about 35mph. After that I went tubeless. I've never had a tubeless tire just fail and loose air pressure as fast as my tubes failing. It's way easier to fix a small puncture with a plug roadside than removing the whole and tire to change a tube roadside. That being said for long trip I would still carry spare tubes for the issues you described that having a tube would be good for.
@Herzankerkreuz67

jde95tln Honda made a big mistake by bringing out the Africa Twin only with tube tires ! In my opinion there should be two versions of tires and rims to choose from so the customer could decide. The Africa Twin with tube tires is a big no, no to an otherwise great bike! Safe rides 👍🏍
@jde95tln
@jde95tln 6 лет назад
I guess Honda in a way still left it up to the customer. Cheaper for them to stick with offering only one option but, as a customer. Once we buy one we can choose to either buy tubeless wheels, or tape the inside of the rim (cheaper than new wheels and easier to convert back to tubes if needed) or stick with the tubes. I chose the cheaper route and bought an Out-Ex kit to convert my wheels to tubeless. If it fails me I can always just slap a tube back in there and continue on. If I only have a small puncture though, very easy to just plug it and go.
@RedEmpire36
@RedEmpire36 5 лет назад
@@Herzankerkreuz67 I ride more offroad than onroad - tubeless tires are pointless because you still have to have a tube and if the rim gets bent at all, the tubeless does not work - also tire can fall off the bead. If you almost all on the road, sure.
@Herzankerkreuz67
@Herzankerkreuz67 5 лет назад
@@RedEmpire36 You just kind of confirmed my point. I believe the majority of Africa Twin owners do eventually spend more time on paved roads. As I tried to explain I think Honda could have further increased the popularity of a good bike by having a version with tubeless tires readily available right out of the dealership. ( I am aware that converting to tubeless tires is possible using aftermarket rims, however not everyone wants to spend the extra money) Safe rides

I have a Honda Transalp, the baby brother to your AT. I had heavy duty tubes but after a high speed blowout with the front wheel I decided to convert to tubeless. The tires were already tubeless types so I taped and sealed the rims. If I have an unpluggable puncture, I’ll be able to put a tube back in the rim. Simple enough, safer, lighter and with the option to revert to tubed if it comes to that.

I see where you're coming from, but you're discussing big, catastrophic punctures that will render a tyre and tube useless. Sure, in that case it won't matter which type of tyre you are using, as neither a tube patch nor a tyre plug will work. But those cases are the rarer ones, the most common ones are small, easily repairable punctures, and I would take a 5' tubeless plug over a 60'+ tube patch any day. I would still carry a 21" tube (can fit both front and rear tyres in an emergency) to cope with big punctures but it's just so easy to repair the more common small punctures, and not to mention the added highway-speed safety. Sorry, Honda screwed up on this one.
@Herzankerkreuz67

kokokanalo I hear you man ! Your words are like music in my ears 👍 For a long time I thought I was the only advocate for tubeless tyres! I so much wish that Honda would have two models of the Africa Twin to choose from to leave it up to the customer which type of tires and rims are mounted. The tubeless version of the Africa Twin is a big no, no to an otherwise great bike ! Safe rides 👍🏍
@jaywhoisit4863
@jaywhoisit4863 6 лет назад
kokokanalo I live in Africa. Deep and dark. All bikes here run tubes. Tubeless will get you in serious trouble. The most common is sliced sidewalls from sharp stones. Tube tires this is an easy fix. Everyone carries a couple spare tubes. On long trips we carry tire irons. Honda did the right thing.

A blow out with a tube is fast - tubeless it's slow and you have a chance to catch it. Counterintuitive but true. If you go tubeless - check for the rim shape and make sure it's right - should have a lip to grab the bead.

@whitedrguy6503
@whitedrguy6503 6 лет назад
I much prefer tube over tubeless for reasons discussed, one thing to take into consideration is a tubeless tyre as opposed to a tube tyre, tube tyres, ie TT are so much easier to get off the bead and easier to seat back on the bead, tubeless can be a nightmare to break the bead at times and hard to reseat. Sadly with bigger tyres you can not get tube tyres, easy for smaller tyres like a 130 but anything bigger they are impossible. Big tip to reduce pinch flats with tube tyres is to use talcum powder in the tyre to allow the tube to slip and reduce the friction between tyre and tube.

I think he's going on about Tub-LISS tires, common in the dirt bike world. They use a small tire-like tube to hold the bead of the primary tire. Basically it creates 2 chambers of air in the tire, allowing you to run low PSI without dismounting the tire. Yes, it is a hassle to replace a tube, but you're correct. It is the better option for remote traveling over plugs and carrying spare tires.
