I would like to see if there's a Maslow's Hiearchy of Needs of collective entities like entire civilizations and societies. I am convinced that the more the average citizen spends on the bottom of the pyramid, the more religious the collective tends to be. My theory is that while religion was created to fill in several voids from the need to regulate life in society or providing a solution to unanswered questions, it has also served as a fiction to make suffering and deprivation more endurable. And this is a common trait in several religions.
@kartikmann_
@kartikmann_ 7 лет назад
Mandrilo You're somewhat in the right. Actually, when a person spends the most time and effort on the very bottom of the pyramid, he isn't doing that by choice. It simply means that he's literally too poor to think beyond basic physiological needs. A whole society where the average person is like this is an extremely poor society. Now since the average person won't be able to properly climb up the pyramid (sure he might get two square meals a day, get married, have friends and everything), he'll turn to religion to keep the existential dread inherent in every person at bay, and that's his way of achieving self-actualisation.

I feel a strong social pressure from people who are more focused on survival needs. I feel guilty about caring so much for my health and relationships, when there is work to be done or money to be made. As if I imagine them thinking "How dare you waste time meditating, socializing, or exercising when you could spend that time laboring". Does anybody else get this vibe in the blue-collar community?
@noprablem8763
@noprablem8763 8 лет назад
+BrotherCrispen Aye. Growing up in an 'outsider' family in a rural area (my grandparents moved from NYC to the Catskill mountains) exposed me to two very different life perspectives. One comes from having enough (and being able to fall back on one's family's resources should one go through a crisis), and the other from having to expend a lot of effort to survive, without the option of a fallback. I can definitely relate to feeling guilt around this stuff, but I try to keep in mind that nobody chooses the circumstances of their birth.
@desertflwrs
@desertflwrs 8 лет назад
I'm guilty of giving off that vibe, usually when I'm uncomfortable engaging with someone or something. Being busy or working can be comforting because you feel "in control" but I'm learning that doing so is to alienate yourself from life.
@jamjox9922
@jamjox9922 8 лет назад
+BrotherCrispen Your suffering can never alleviate someone else's suffering. To be a better you helps the world more than to be a miserable you--no matter what your circumstances are. Guilt is the worst of emotions because it doesn't help anyone, it only dehumanizes. Take care of yourself.
@brousi
@brousi 8 лет назад
The answer to your question is yes, I can relate. I currently work as a manual worker in a (Hewlett-Packpard) server factory - handling completed products after they leave the assembly line, (I've done unqualified labor, handling, construction, warehouse, etc. to give you some context) and if I'm to grossly generalize, the people who prosper in such work conditions (manual labor, kinda low pay, not much responsibility) or simply end up there and stay there for whatever reason, usually don't have the privilege of extra free time and capacity to research a lot of things. So when you talk to anyone, any sort of analyzing, really trying to understand anything below the surface level - this gets met with negative responses. Most people of that socio-economic class are victim of New Age and Pro-Russian/Anti-American propaganda that really thrives in an environment where there's too much (conflicting) information and people don't have a good grip on the tools necessary to filter out the false information from the true ones, they don't know how to determine this, check their sources, etc. I could argue that this is evident with the recent events like Brexit, Trump becoming so popular etc, but that is another topic.

+J.A. Martiz I came across your comment, and I think it's an answer to Nerdwriter's take on Maslow's Hierarchy. Guilt doesn't cut it, action does. Whoever you are, whatever you have, help someone else in need. Widow's Mite or Rich Man's Camel, act.
@RAVEmovies

This is extremely helpful. I've been focusing on improving the peak of the pyramid when I still have major problems in the lower levels- It's often led me to become frustrated, and has even become a detriment to the progress I have made in self-actualization.

I have a massive amount of respect for Shawn - and for the Nerdwriter, as well - because they sat down, thought about what they actually wanted to do with their lifes and then they did it. That's 3 steps more than most people manage. I'm still sitting. Of course, there is a crossroads where you have to decide if there is a moral imperative of sorts to help all basically-good people. I give a lot of respect to those who decide and act on that crossroads decision - I just took the other road.

John Green has commented on Maslow several times in various videos and on Tumblr. I first came across it when I started training to be a teacher. I need to watch this again to pull apart your main points. And I am going to miss that brick wall too. It seemed so solid, so dependable.

I completely agree. The hierarchy is simplistic and further dehumanizes people in desperate need as "others" who aren't capable of things that first world people are. People in need love and create art and understand a relative system of morality just the same as any other human.
@stewartimel
@stewartimel 11 лет назад
For all the people who disagree with the hierarchy of needs, I believe what Maslow meant was not that if you're hungry, but if you are starving. If you're about to die from starvation, I don't think you're gonna pass up a sandwich to go talk to a pretty girl
@MrLanum
@MrLanum 11 лет назад
I think what you just explains goes hand in hand with the hierarchy. I think as he sort of described, we as humans adapt to what we know, I think we accept our hardships as reality and then proceed to make the best of them thus satisfying that particular tier with in the hierarchy I think we adapt to our circumstances and decrease what it takes to fill these needs and then move up the hierarchy to the next tier.
@stewartimel
@stewartimel 11 лет назад
I'm not saying they are incapable of complex thought, I'm just saying you will probably choose food over the pursuance of love in you are starving. Pursuing love and sacrificing yourself for someone you love are different. I do agree with you that it's hard to use Harlow's model as an end all be all explanation of human psychology, because we are never completely set in one level. We always have various needs met/not met in each level depending on the day, so I think the model is still good!

Besides the fact that I think there is sufficient evidence that the so-called first world is responsible to a large extent for the lack of infrastructure and impoverishment of 'third-world' countries. I find Maslow very problematic. The whole Maslow pyramid as its presented here is a very classist (often Eurocentric if applied globally) and functions to strengthen distinctions between people. People in the West hardly ever see images of the 'third-world that isn't a starving person with flies in their eyes or picturesque scenes of animals. Imagine us only seeing images of school shootings and Miss America pageants. This classist hierarchy of needs assumes people who are going through for example a war or famine don't struggle with more existential or emotional or 'spiritual' needs. It elevates the importance of some people's sufferings. and it also assumes the West is the model for progress and a healthy society. It says, "our sufferings is more evolved suffering, more refined, our suffering is part of the future." Please spare us poor subalterns your patronizing compassion.

+Morné Volschenk You forget that our grandparents in Europe saw the biggest massacre in the history of Mankind 70 years ago, and had to rebuild entire countries from ashes? You forget that 80 years ago millions died from the Spanish flu? You forget that 100 years ago millions of sons died in WWI? You forget that Europe is the region in the world with the deadliest and most lasting conflicts? Your prejudice is fueled by ignorance, short memory and perhaps a inferiority complex.
@mjvolschenk
@mjvolschenk 8 лет назад
I'm not saying the Western world hasn't suffered.
@afg22ify
@afg22ify 8 лет назад
+Morné Volschenk No. You are implying that through a position of comfort and prosperity the Western Civilization has become condescendent towards other societies. Suffering is relative, as is comfort, success, failure; and the fact Maslow recognizes different grades of needs and that angst and suffering may come from the absence of one element within this pyramid is a great theoretical construction, that, though not flawless, helps us to put in perspective shared elements to every individual on earth. If you find Maslow problematic, you can always disassemble his pyramid and rearrange the priorities the way you want it, and justify it. And concerning the West being the model for progress and a healthy society, so far I don't see proof that it is not. Nowhere in the world life expectancy, literacy, freedom and equality is higher. And instead of being a cynical mind thinking that we are force feeding others with our ideas, why don't you instead consider that we are giving other societies the possibility to steepen the learning curve on how to deal with problems already solved by the West like certain diseases, hunger, education, etc?

I cannot really agree with you. It's true that the lack of love or emotional security can inspire people but here we are talking about going to sleep cold, hungry, and without the feeling of safetly. If you don't even have money for food, how would you buy pencil and a notebook to be a writer or an artist. People's lives who live in deep poverty is about the daily survival, that is what drains their energy.

From what I understand of it, it is not prescriptive but rather descriptive of general tendencies. A group of people who are starving will primarily be concerned with food, not to say they won't think of anything else or do anything else. Obviously, to every description of the general population there is the deviants and the ones who do not fit it. Also, voluntary refusal of food/shelter or complete impossibility of acquisition of those obviously falls outside the purview of that hierarchy.

I agreed mostly with this. John Green actually made a video on Hank's sports channel where he discussed the hierarchy of needs and found it odd. For one - who in the western world can debunk it? We all have those needs satisfied, mostly. But when you look at developing countries or native tribes, they manage to sing, dance and fall in love whenever - ground tier needs covert or not. It's a hypothetical. Any werstern experiment will be tainted by our knowledge of the pyramid.

I disagree with the Hierarchy's asumption that you can't do higher things like create ponder existence or fall in love when you are suffering because of his so called bottom teir(eg if you are starving or sick). people have and continue to do these things no matter how harsh the sercomstances, in fack for some people that sort of pain and deprivation makes then reach for what you call self actualization.

Will you do a video about Ivan, Evan, will you?

I get tired and worn when I listen to this clip. It's not boring, it's the fast pace of the presentation that wears me down. A slower presentation seems workable to me. If you think that the clip would be too long - then edit it down. Everything doesn't have to be said all at once. Must is not time sensitive material.

I have always been a firm believer in the Marxist principle of not putting up with being treated terribly because you've been told that it will all be repented in the end. He said that one of the main reasons religions, and more specifically the idea of heaven and hell exist is as a way of silencing the less fortunate; people are told that if they struggle through theyr hardships they will go to an eternal paradise after death, so they don't speak out. They bare with it.

NeilSonOfNorbert that's not what "need" means though. In theory you could work on the things at the top of the pyramid, while the bottom fell apart, but you would still NEED those basic structures from the bottom of the pyramid

aww sean is very cute... oh i'm too high on the heirarchy...? but going by this theory, poor people shouldn't be falling in love. But I think they do. Same way people can have sex during an airstrike, it depends on how acclimatized one is to that experience. What you're talking about is the initial stage when one begins to have a new and negative experience

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is quite frankly bullshit. The idea that people who have a hard time fufilling basic physical needs cannot fufil higher needs is insulting and dehumanizing. If true, the term starving artist would have virtually meaning.
