Great insight into a truckers life ! I struggled with backing trailers too, I used a steering knob for a while which is great for turning the wheel quickly while reversing but theres a tendency to over steer and you end up snaking. A useful tip I was told is if you're feeling pressured during a back is when u hold the wheel at the bottom your trailer will go to the side you move the wheel toward. Keep it up 👍

This was a really sad video Hayley. Really felt your pain, I do hope things get better for you, was a bit unsettling to see you so down in life. Can see your struggling with the social aspect of it and probably missing your other half badly. Chin up and I'm sending you positive wishes. Take care 🌈🌞🎈

I agree with you Hayley, when you start to work 50+ hour weeks you lose your life, you have a lot less time with your family or partner or friends and the time you do have with them you are tired. I started to do a lot of 50+ hour weeks with 4am starts after 5-6 months I felt like a zombie, Cut out all my overtime bar one day and feel so much better for it. Driving is a job who cares what truck you drive. Your enjoyment of the job is the most important thing, if working 12-15 hours isn't good for you stop doing it and go back to class 2. I still don't understand people who want to work 50+ hours a week, do they not have lives outside of work? You can always earn more money, you can never earn back time with family and friends.
@TruckDriverHayley

I've never understood that either! I'm glad you have something that's better and you're feeling better now. Life's far too short for 12 to 15 hour days if you ask me. All the best to you 😊

Loved the single point to point drive, Willenhall to Dudley looks great from your vantage point. Go "Woman of Steel " , great to hear your fan base is growing 👏 Great synopsis of HGV driving in the UK, and probably worldwide 🌐, probably the very few jobs that haven't seen a reduction in hour's since the 1950's, 48 hour's was the normal, then 44, 40, 39, and currently 37.5. Sorry to hear about your loss, stay safe all. Best regards John.

So much of what you say sounds so familiar. Whilst I loved the job the hours lack of respect and general attitude towards drivers is depressing. The final straw was when I had changed to days and my daughter rang me to ask when I would be home as she hadn’t seen me all week , I was leaving at 4.00am and not getting home till after she had gone to bed . Thanks for giving such a true perspective of the job as a hgv driver

Hello Hayley ,I was the steering wheel attendant for 40+ years on hgv1 retired now, but as my licence has the 7.5 t on it, I'm going to drive a 7.5t on local deliveries P/T, same calls everyday 3 x 5 hrs a week no weekends , nice local company I feel lucky. I should have done this years ago, I'd have probably seen my children grow up. good luck with what you want to settle into, don't let the job get you down that's the only advice I can give you from a old git.

I've convinced myself I can't do it and I'm beating myself up as I love to drive and so desperately need my class 1 . Your my inspiration watching your videos as your real and honest .

I'm greatful for your vlogs Hayley, especially when you speak in detail about the job as I'm trying to get a handle on it before I take the plunge of doing my licence. I'm facing a career change I didn't expect at 49 so it'll be my last. I'm an ex lecturer which I also gave up because of the hours and ofsted stress. Set up my own business, which has been decimated by covid, and I no longer enjoy it because of the covid risk . When it hit me that becoming a driver really appealed I felt much happier in myself, it feels like the perfect job style for me. A lot of what you've said reinforces that for me, but has also given me more to think about. I don't really want long hours but four on four off appeals to me. So I just wanted to say Thankyou for all the info and advice on the job, you're probably helping a lot of people without knowing it. It's certainly encouraging me and helping my confidence which has had a heck of a battering this past eighteen months. I'm sorry you're having a tough time but with your positive outlook you will go far I'm sure of it. You're a great girl Hayley :)

Sorry to hear it's been really tough for you this year. I hope you can find something that you will enjoy better. 4 days to me says 4 longer days as Chris mentioned too. I've mostly seen job adverts saying 12 hour shifts for 4 on and 4 off but I've never tried that myself so I'm not 100% sure. Start with class 2 and see if you like it. I really enjoyed the class 2 work and may go back to it. Thanks for your kind words too. Have a great weekend 😊

Truck Driver Hayley Thankyou Hayley, and I'm sorry you've been having a tough time, your strength shines through. I'd definetly prefer to start with class 2 and see how it goes :) although it may be easier working then leaving it behind when I go home. Which I haven't been able to do for years. I actually don't think a long working day would be so bad if I can forget about work for the weekend , and if I'm happier in work. Your vlogs are really helpful, I love to hear your perspective of driving and you've given great insight into the nitty gritty, which is invaluable. Always look forward to your updates :) I can see myself doing it :)

Chris Murray thanks Chris , I've been looking at local jobs I think maybe tipper work would be good for me. Although different to Hayley (although I say I don't want long hours) I like the idea of long distance driving, I'm really not sure, but what appeals, I'm learning there are so many different job possibilities for a driver and that would be fantastic. The freedom appeals enormously. Thankyou for the advice

Condolences to you & the family. Nice to see another down-to-earth video from you. I particularly like the fact that you upload when it suits you, and not on a regular timetable....sometimes less is more !! I completely agree about the awful facilities/service areas for truck drivers - especially given that they charge £25-£30 per night to park. Last year during the lockdown I was out 2-3 days at a time, during which for the most part there were no showers, no toilets, no cooked food etc - I (and I assume many others) often had to resort to whatever the petrol stations had on shelves or in the chiller cabinets, and their filthy, stinking, toilets. I've been driving trucks for about 25 years now (mostly self employed or agency, because i like the variety) & I love the job - I've had warehouse, office & management roles in that time, but would rather be out on the road - the solitude suits me. To me the biggest downside is the pay - at least at my level....I'm only a 7.5 tonne driver and most of the work I see offered is only a few pence higher than minimum wage. I have always wanted to get my class 2 & 1, but the pay system makes it really hard to get the funds put by to cover the training fees & the lost income while training. Hopefully, now that the driver shortages and truck driver pay/conditions being highlighted this will provide opportunities for others trapped at the lower end of driving heirarchy to move forwards.

Hayley, thanks again for putting the time and effort producing these Vlogs. I find it sad you have had some negative and unpleasant comments, as many of us subscribers have a lot of time and respect for you. You raise good points and your honesty and integrity is second to none. You make comments! and i have not heard you whine really, and a great ambassador for Kays. You will make a first class instructor, and Transport Manager, also a welcome Driver Assessor. You have a calm demeanor and a professional attitude. I still think you should be making training video's, with tips and tricks as newbies watching your Vlogs get such a lot from them. I recently got a letter from the DVSA asking me to go back to driving, but i really can not justify. I got a better paying job, working normal hours and have more family time. I used to spend weeks out in Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, etc picking up potatoes for a company called AB Texel (Dutch company but i worked for there British branch near peterborough.) And honestly, the job was not bad, but the pay was ridiculous and missing out on crucial family time, you can not get that time back, ever. The industry really does need a big shakeup. Drivers need to be treated like professionals, especially with the skills and qualifications needed to drive a lorry. Only plus side to having my class 1 is a fall back job if i have too.

Hello Hayley, of course it is only natural to add a string to your bow like qualifying as a Transport Manager, I passed mine when I was working those crazy hours you talk of by attending a course at night school in 1986 and if time was tight I would turn up with the lorry to class. Both myself and my wife are qualified TM's. The missus also used to teach the driver cpc and ADR courses travelling around the country. Now one point I would make is that if you think being a TM means finishing work at 5pm you may find that many end up at the end of the day sorting problems with routes or loads well after home time. Personally I prefer to drive but try not to do those crazy hours anymore, getting old you see. Good luck with the home study I'm sure as an ex teacher you'll soon have a learning routine in place. All the best.

Reversing an artic is exactly the same method as reversing a car and trailer. Just like you, I spent the best part of 3 months after I'd passed my Class 1 trying to work out how to reverse a trailer. That was 31 years ago. If I'd known that learning to reverse a trailer on the back of my car would have given me the understanding I needed before going on the Class 1 training, I would have done it in an instant. Anyone who can confidently reverse a trailer on the back of their car will find reversing an artic a peice of cake. Before it was scrapped by the government a couple of weeks ago, the B+E (car & trailer) reverse exercise was exactly the same as the C+E (truck & trailer) reverse exercise. Check them both out on RU-vid if you want to learn how to reverse a trailer before your HGV training starts. I wish more people would realise that an artic is just a bigger version of a car and trailer and you are not learning how to reverse an artic, you are simply learning how to reverse a trailer (of any size).

@@jockforster As you probably already know, since November 2021 the reverse exercise part of the HGV test is now done by the training schools (not the examiner) and can be taken up to 6 months before you do your on road part of the HGV test with the examiner. If you can crack that reverse exercise with a caravan on the back of your car, I would be booking a one day reverse course and test with the HGV training school. Once you've passed that, give yourself a break of a few days or a few weeks and then come back for the on road training and test. Seriously, take the pressure off yourself by not having both tests booked for the same day because if you fail the reverse exercise test, you then have to cancel the on road test. Many training schools are still offering a 5 day training course with the new 2 tests both on the final day but why have all that pressure of having to pass 2 tests back to back when you can take them up to 6 months apart.

@@jockforster No problem. As I stated in my original post, before it was scrapped late last year, the car and trailer (B+E) reverse exercise was exactly the same as the truck and trailer (C+E) reverse exercise. Find an empty car park and set out around 8 cones in the required format and practice at your own pace. If you can reverse a caravan as shown in this video, then you won't have any problem passing the Class 1 reverse exercise as its exactly the same test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5loerKRKIo4.html

Passed my class 1 just over a week ago. Couldn’t get my head around the reversing the entire time I was training and was seriously considering not doing the test. I somehow reversed it in without a shunt on the test, probably a total fluke. My employers paid for my course, so will be on the roads soon. Totally dreading reversing though, as I know I’ll be totally useless. Great Vlog Hayley, hope things get better for you soon.

Every day is different ( Even reversing into the same bay / space ) But now your beginning to notice the misalignment before it really goes wrong, its up an onwards from here forward.. Personally, I have off days when nothing seems to go right. Then suprise myself with getting a blind reverse around a tight corner 1st try .. But recently started having problems reversing up a solo tractor. ( keep sterling the wrong way ) LoL see you about ( I'm on Curnocks ) ..

Hello Hayley, great to see you making much more progress. As an ex-secondary teacher myself, I think that prepares you for the "criticisms" and childish judgments you'll receive, on here and at drop off sights etc. (And I'm talking about from apparent grown adults.... Not the kids!). Just a couple of things: It would be quite interesting to see an over nighter - but, you've just mentioned that you want to get home ASAP in your video, so maybe that's a no-go !! Anyway, regarding the reversing. Would setting-up a board with lots of obstacles / pegs of wood, and using a (good) scale model of a Artic (with turning front wheels) and extend the steering wheel shaft, so you could actually turn it and see the wheel positions, help ?? Set-up a class room in the back of a physical trailer.... If / When you come to teach, that is.
@TruckDriverHayley
@TruckDriverHayley 2 года назад
It absolutely does. You've got to be thick skinned for sure. I considered doing a night out but the truth is that would only be for an experience. Maybe in the future, who knows? I enjoy the day work. The best way to learn is watching so I'd say that's good advice. I'm planning on making a reversing tutorial video and for that I've bought a model artic for the same reasons. Have a great weekend 😁

Thats what did me in the end as I aged the long hours and not knowing when I finished. Ended my days shunting which I loved 4 on 4 off 12 hour shifts. Was made redundant along with many october 2020. The company was local and my drive was 10 minutes to site on back roads. If I wanted to go back to it I would have to travel 30 miles to work. At 63 took redundancy and wont return. Another thing once you reverse an artic without thinking then jump in a rigid you will again turn the steering wheel the wrong way as you become so used to an artic. LOL. Take care.

The big difference with this reverse and the 1st one I saw you do is, now, you don't oversteer. You will get where your reverse goes lovely, but, there will be the the time that no matter what you do the backend will not go where you want it, thats just sods law. Loading bays at RDC's are notorious when the plate wont go into the trailer and you need to move it over 1 or 2 inches so it will, what a PIA that is. Reverse when you need to turn is: If you are looking at the righthand mirror steer left and lefthand mirror steer right. If its a blindside reverse you need a banksman because any damage is down to you. If you're reversing straight steer towards the mirror you see more of the head end in.
@TruckDriverHayley
@TruckDriverHayley 2 года назад
Thanks for the tips as always. Yes, it took a while to stop the over steering. I'm not sure whether that was a habit from the rigid or not. We all have good days and bad days. Another one like RDCsare motorway services when everyone is watching 😁

A very honest video Hayley, thank you. I fully understand where you’re coming from on the subject of the hours worked, and not knowing when you’re going to finish. I worked on tankers over 20 years ago and my wife would never know when I was going to be home. You’ll always get drivers who scoff and say it’s the nature of the job, if you don’t like it get out. I made the choice to leave and drive for a supermarket, we had just started a family and I wanted to see my kids grow up. You make your own choices in life to suit you. I like being home every day and not doing long hours, I work permanently on nights but I’m fine with that ( roads quieter for a start) 😉 The reversing aspect of the job can be challenging, some of the reversing we do at stores can be a mare, especially if the yards are full of shit. Makes me laugh at how tame the reversing manoeuvre was on my test, compared with what I deal with every day. I’ve been driving trucks over 30 years, but you can still get a day when you look a right novice when reversing ( especially if another driver is watching you 😂) Keep up the videos, ignore the abuse 👍

I know what you saying but this is HGV world. It is not a utopia in any sense. I do distant driving on class 2 and sometime a.shift finishes upto 15 hours. How boring that is only a driver can understand. However to be a postive side you dont take the work back home with you as your previous job of teaching. You do your shift and go home. I cannot stand working in an office either where you just sitting on a chair for 10 hours a day. Atleast it takes me out to different places. There will always be a shortage of drivers due to the reasons that you have mentioned. But this licence is a precious and practical thing and one must have it in order to go through rainy days if needed. I have few driver friends and we keep talking to each other on the phones to.minimise the boredom. Short hour jobs are almost non existent in this industry. However there is an option for you work to work part time but then the money goes down too. My advice for is to do what you really want to do in the end. Make yourself happy first before thinking about somebody else.
