He was very ill at one point while he was doing Les Mis. And those early parts are so hard to do with that quiet tone. Together it's pretty impressive he was able to get this out this well.

Hands downs the hardest part of this (impossibly difficult) song is the soft parts. In the story it’s a soft prayer. It *has* to be quiet and that’s SO hard to do, it’s bonkers nutso hard to sing at the edge of your range *quiet* This song is the BIGGEST flex for tenors it’s SO HARD doing pianissimo way up that high for a man’s range?? That’s nutso insanely difficult. He’s singing quietly at the very edges of his range that NUTS

I believe there was at least once during one of his runs with Les Mis that he was pretty sick. Maybe this was filmed then and didn’t want to strain himself too much.

I think one of my fave performance of Ramin singing this song is actually the encore performance with Colm Wilkinson. Ramin was hugely inspired by Colm to pursue theater so it was such a special moment

If I could sing like him, that’d be better than having all the money in the world. Andrew Lloyd Webber made sure the Phantom would have a rock star quality voice as well as the primary broadway voice. His head tone, range and his natural vibrato is so good. It’s weird but listening to him just makes me cry because it’s so good. I know that sounded goofy.

My Jean Valjean will always and forever be Michael Burgess who I saw on opening night at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in 1989 where he performed the role 1,000 times. My greatest honour, however, was seeing him perform for the song live in 1992 at a Stars on Ice Show while Kurt Browning, the 4 time Canadian Figure Skating Champion skated around him.

I know everyone drools over Ramin... but to me his voice is just "pretty" and doesn't suit this song. Colm's voice has this purity of tone on every note that mirrors Valjean's purity of purpose in this prayer to God that just - chef's kiss - elevates his version right up there to heaven. Colm is the only singer on this song who can make me cry every single time.

To be fair, there's a huge difference between this performance and what he does in the actual role. That said, I agree about Colm. He IS Valjean in my book!
