Chris has stated that he suffers from severs stage fright. Having his wife on stage allows him to focus on her and to be able to filter out the crowd. The fact that she is a wonderful duet partner is just a bonus
I'm glad you mentioned his wife Morgane. She had a solo career prior to meeting Chris and gave it up once she had children. It was her suggestion that Chris start performing his songs live and sing them to her due to his discomfort on stage. I think he's passed that now but she is on stage for most of his performances. FYI check out this collab with Justin Timberlake at the CMA awards. Enjoy
I think he dealt with the stage fright quite some time ago. At least to a manageable level. He performed with The Steeldrivers for YEARS before he went solo, and she wasn’t a part of the band then.
The "fiiiiiiiire" held so long without vibrato works so perfectly because of the absolutely beautiful chord progression moving under it. As someone who writes and sings, I don't know if it's his vocal performance or that amazing chord progression right there that makes me more jealous.
Another song that watching the music video is an absolute MUST to capture the heartbreak and tragedy of a young woman suffering from, and finally succumbing to her bipolar disorder.
Never heard of this guy so thanks for highlighting him. And thanks for always making an entertaining broadcast. Yo are so expressive its just great fun to watch.
Have a listen to cold live at the cma awards or either way live on the Charlie Rose show... and the national anthem at the super bowl.. you will be blown away.
I love the fact that Chris' wife accompanies him on so many songs. It really brings out the best in both of them and heightens the emotional connection we have with them. Thank you Beth and love your cover of Wicked Game.
As someone who has had neighbours turn up with fire and pitch forks when they sing, I love watching you break down things I dont hear. I can play instruments, but singing.... nope. I've a real admiration for what your ears hear.
He is authentic. That's the thing I love about him. Most current country male singers, it's like they went to classes to sound country, to learn a country twang. I smell phony, sorry, but that's the way it sounds to be. Formula singing, formula music. Not Chris. I think that's much of the reason so many people are touched by his music.
A natural voice sync with no autotune. We have become so accustomed with the autotune sound that when we hear great duo singing without it, wow, it sounds so natural. A real treat to the ear. It's not just pitch, their voices were made for each other. Great song too. My favorite, country but with a lemon twist.
When a singer does excessive runs it makes me question their ability to sustain a note. I know it’s probably not the case in many instances but it just pops in my head. With Chris you can tell it’s about the emotional connection to the song so I never get that same feeling.
Please react to the official video I believe is the only one he made a music video for but I warn you have tissues ready. I came very close to bawling because of the video Edit: The song kinda takes on a whole different meaning with the video
Morgane is a respected songwriter in her own right and is certainly a strong supporting partner for her husband...helping him reach heights in music he may not have reached without her support...five kids later they obviously have found a rhythm...and that's good for music.
From a vocal coach perspective, this was probably the best version to react to, but the music video is the greatest one ever made. It's more like a short movie.
I get why people recommend the music video, but the vocals in this one are sooooo great. Chris and Morgane together are fabulous! I recommend watching their performance of Amanda live at the Grand Ol Opry when you get the chance. Also, she does an amazing version of You Are My Sunshine live with Chris as her backup and guitarist.
I truly appreciate your taking time to show the nuances of vocal styles. Appreciate your cover of Chris's song too. Shared several times with my friends. You make my day kid. ❤
IMO the 'messy parts' are when he conveys emotion the best. Emotion is hard to convey without that character of the imperfections Chris is just REALLY good at having perfect imperfection evoking powerful emotion like his Star Spangled Banner rendition at the Super Bowl.
O.K. Here we go. I generally don't like the idea of "Guitarist reacts", or "Vocal Coach reacts." It's like you're saying "I'll tell you what he's doing." I'm as good as the mega star, so I can critique them." I'm a thirty five year full time musician. Live and studio, in multiple genera's, crossing multiple applications and instruments. I couldn't miss the fact that you are correct with Chris. When you mentioned that he goes full on with a chest voice but trails off beautifully and delicately, I knew you knew your stuff. You got my sub. And you're right. Many times the best of a performance is what wasn't played: What wasn't sung: The discrimination to hold back is the most technically elite of decisions. It's difficult in the moment. It's beauty is only realized in retrospect. It's the perfect example of the rewards of delayed gratification for all. - Respect.
Two things the video to this song is heartbreaking. It’s a very thoughtful take on mental illness. Second he has announced an UK tour next October. This is your chance to see him live!
Sometimes his voice and his phrasing particularly in the beginning reminds me of Bruce Springsteen. I really agree with you about singers embellishing their vocals because it can pop you right out of a song because it's not appropriate to the feeling of the music...note shredders and guitar shredders are the bane of contemporary music. Imagine if Eric Burdon had embellished his vocal in "House of the Rising Sun"...it would have reduced the power and minimized the impact of the song. None of the musicians overplayed their parts which is one reason why the song is so iconic today. I'm assuming that that's what you mean when you use the term 'organic'...that all the parts are appropriate to each other.
Love your channel Darlin! Also love your voice as well, magic! Completely off topic, but could you PLEASE, PLEASE cover some early Aussie bands! 70's, 80's, and 90's. You'll love the Divynals, (I hope). Midnight Oil, The Seekers, The Angels, just to name a few. We did make some amazing music over here too! Oh just thought of another great one, The Radiators. Please, please Beth! Much appreciated, one proud, FAIRDINKUM AUSSIE!

Enjoy your channel, wish you would react to movies about music. Two I enjoyed “20 Feet from Fame” about backup singers and “Say Amen, Somebody “ documentary on gospel singers.
hi beth its been a while since i heard your reactions but i was waiting for this reaction because this song has meaning to me i had an accident at work i was in an induced coma for 5 days and in my opinion this song it was helpful for my recovery because i lost 3 months of memory and this is the last song i remember before i lost my memory and woke up in the hospital but if you can read the video of this song you can find some of the comments abouth the voices or the way they interpreted the song post: chris stapleton just made a video for this particular song and no for the others songs he has
Another artist whose music helps people (himself included) deal with mental health is Avi Kaplan. First Place I Go off his latest Album Floating on a Dream is a prime example. Would love to see you react to his music.
Request… any chance you could do a reaction to the classic rock show? They’re a classic rock covers band but some of their performances are on par (and possibly above) the originals
Hello BeatRoar I recommend that you listen to El Duelo con La Ley, a great Chilean group and Ely Guerra, the original Unplugged, you will be surprised by the singing and duet masterclass that these great artists throw at each other. Also, if you want to listen to something really crazy that I am sure you will like and disconcert, listen to Las flores also Unplugged version by Café Tacvba. Please give me a chance. Greetings from Guanajuato, Mexico, great job you do.
HI, Beth! I hope you're doing well. Jesy Nelson, formerly of Little Mix, just released a new music video addressing domestic violence. Her voice is rich and haunting, and the message is powerful. I'd be interested to hear your feedback on her vocals and see your reaction to the music video. 💙
He's undoubtedly very talented but sometimes less is more when it comes to vocals. Sometimes in this performance it's hard to know whether he wants shout or sing. This isn't scat or Janis at Monterey Pop, it's country.
I love your reviews but unfortunately on this one you were so focused on the singing you missed the true essence of the song and that is the story. Watch the music video and just listen.
