I love the introspection at the end. Metal often gets derided, discarded, or outright damned for being "just angry noise" or "evil". And while musicians embracing more extreme techniques like distorted vocals, technical virtuosity, or playing at break-neck (well, fingers anyway) speeds is going to turn off some listeners, it really does have a LOT to offer. I mean, I get it, metal is an acquired taste like black coffee, IPAs, or Whiskey. But once you can get your head around it, you start to recognize and appreciate the knowledge that goes into composing the pieces, as well as the skill and work that goes into musicians mastering their instruments to play them. There's SO much to explore over here on the Dark Side. We'll have you decked out in black leather throwing up the horns in no time ;-)

I saw Jinjer live on this past Wednesday, with 3 opening acts. My first live concert in over 3 years; the bass players were pummeling my rib cage all night, and Tatiana was even more attractive in person. They did this song, and many others. I think my favorite of the night was 'I Speak Astronomy'. Try the official music video of that song.

You should check out their performance of "Perrenial" at Wacken 2019. Absolutely incredible performance, and the band's energy and chemistry on stage is phenomenal to watch. The sound you really liked coming out of the first chorus is the drummer Vlad playing a little melody on Zilbell type bell cymbals. In addition to being an absolute monster drummer, Vlad is a classically trained pianist. There is a fantastic video on Jinjer's channel of Vlad playing a piece by Rachmaninoff.

Great analysis as always! The scrunched nose and exposed teeth you see in some of Tatiania's harsh vocals help create that brighter screamy sound with the static-y overtones more like a fry scream, while the more rounded mouth shapes with the teeth covered create a darker growly sound that is more associated with false chord growling. It parallels the effects that vocal tract shaping have on the timbre of clean singing. Tatiana also, as you mentioned, uses a lot of variety in her sound in both her clean and harsh vocals. That ability to create a wide variety of sounds and use them effectively to convey the story and emotion of the songs is something that many great metal vocalists share in common. If you're ever interested in exploring an even more intense example of how vocal tract shaping can enable a huge variety of different sounds in harsh vocals, you could check out the one take vocal performance of Lorna Shore's song To The Hellfire by their vocalist Will Ramos. Be warned that it's *extremely* heavy and the vocals are all harsh, but Will is able to produce such a huge variety of sounds in his harsh vocals that it doesn't get repetitive at all. Will also did a thing with The Charasmatic Voice's Elizabeth Zharoff where he had his throat scoped while doing his harsh vocals to help aid research into how those types of sounds are produced safely. There's a really cool video about it on her channel.

Wonderful analysis. Tatiana is such a brilliant vocalist, I become more impressed the more I listen to her. Recently saw Jinjer live, and she and the rest of the band are even more impressive. You mentioned how she switches from cleans to harsh vocals, in the song "Vortex" from the latest album, she does basically an answer/question section where she swaps every couple bars. You mentioned the nose scrunch. Besides David and Tatiana, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm also scrunches her nose when doing a lot of her singing. She is definitely worth checking out. The music video for "The Steeple" shows some decent face shots of it, or the live performance of "Wicked Ways" from Colorado Springs. Using a slower beat also works well in playing a brass instrument, and helps get the musical direction going forward as it should.
@randalljones4370
@randalljones4370 Год назад
There is at least one point as she 'goes down the spiral staircase' where the cleans and growls clearly overlap (and it's not a reverb sustain). But I do agree : even in the live versions, she switches with incredible speed (Perennial being the classic example).

Your scrunched nose theory is still valid. It's easier to make a harsh, raspy/nasal fry with that placement. But when you need a true growl, that won't get you there. Tatiana can both scream(what most people call fry), and growl. There's lots of fry on both, but they're very different physically. My fry is pretty high and harsh, while my growl is much lower. My true, clean voice is bass-baritone if that gives you more information.

-In my dive into this band, this is the one song I can’t fully get invested into even after multiple listens. At the same time, I think it’s a top level song. I love how they’re not trying to be just a metal band. The different styles don’t sound like it’s one band of a particular genre playing their style and trying to play two other styles. You have a reggae sound, a full on metal sound, and then a more rock sound. All three are VERY well done and shows how great they are as musicians. The fact that Tatiana can go between the three so easily is a testament to her ability. With that said, I think my issue is over how quick the switches in the beginning are. -I understood what you were talking about with the slight reggae feel in the last false scream section. When you talked about that, it made me think of when DOD created the “Grunge pedal” with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden being huge. The funny part is among the sounds you could set it to was Cannibal Corpse, which is a popular death metal band that may be recognized from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” So, when you said what you said, I imagined someone playing something by Jimmy Cliff with one hooked up. -For something completely different, I’m sure there are a number of suggestions for “Perennial”, “Teacher, Teacher”, and “Vortex” but a song that I think is required is “Bad Water.” I fell in love with that song with the official live video that Napalm Records released. -In December, they will be the first band I’ve seen in, as I like to describe it,”God, I’m old” years when they play in Charlotte. For most of my life, I’ve gone through serious depression around this time of year and never looked forward to it. This is the first year I’ve been excited for December to get here and, as weird as it sounds, this show is the reason.

Another entertaining and inspired performance by Jinjer ... the spectrum of talent displayed here is expansive -- good choice for your analysis and reaction. Very astute observations, thx. For follow-up, and variety, would like The Voca😄lyst's to push the envelope with the legendary "The Black Opera: Symphoniae Mysteriorum in Laudem Tenebrarum" by Opera IX, specifically Act V: The Magic Temple. The Black Opera is the Opus Magnum of Opera IX with lead vocalist Cadaveria. Cadaveria has since gone solo, and a good representative music video is "Flowers in Fire" official video by Cadaveria. The Black Opera has no video, just audio -- but, riveting high energy heavy metal just the same. If Cadaveria is beautiful, but a little too intense, then let me suggest something more regional: Jan 22, 2020 “The In-Between” by the metal group In This Moment from the album 'Mother (Jan 22, 2020). Very high energy metal -- would love to get reactions.

If you mix this with the topic of the song (2014 war in eastern Ukraine which force the band members to leave their home country of Donestk) you have a very emotional performance. 3. I speak astronomy. For these one you can either choose live show of official video. This one shows the power of Tatiana's clean voice. 4. And finally whatever live song you pick is great but take care to the quality of the live video, The whole band deserve it.

I definitely don’t know enough to know for sure, but you’re scrunched nose theory is interesting. When she did that was a completely different technique than the time you noticed she didn’t. One was a scream and one was a growl, so maybe it’s useful specifically for her on that type of scream?

I just saw them in Boston two days ago and they are amazing live. Tatiana is an amazing vocalist and front person. I wanted to watch Eugene and Vlad but Tati just kept pulling my eyes away from them because she is just that commanding in her presence on stage. Definitely a band I will see every time they are around. Perennial (Live at Wacken) is a great video to see how well she commands a crowd. I swear every person in the place was singing along with Pisces.

Tatiana clearly shows, that shouting (done right) does not hurt your voice. Also: I‘d be really interested in your view on Rolo Tomassi

Have you ever listened to Opeth? They are a Swedish prog metal band formed in the late 80’s who are still performing and putting out music. Their lead singer and founder, Mikael Akerfeldt basically invented the modern growling techniques that all current metal vocalists use that allow you to switch between clean and harsh vocals so easily and also growl without damaging your chords. They are a direct influence on Jinjer (and hundreds of other bands). Their live version of “Ghost of Perdition” at Red Rocks is a reaction channel staple and a good intro to them, you should check it out! Love your channel and reactions!

You mentioned in a previous video that you’d like to learn how metal singers use the false cords. Watch the instructional video called The Zen Of Screaming by Melissa Cross. She literally teaches/coaches the best in the industry.

Hey there. You mentioned that music like this wasn't involved in your music schooling. If you're interested in hearing a piece from metal that was part of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's curriculum I recommend checking out Ne Obliviscarus' piece, And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope. Dual vocalists, (cleans and growls), two guitarists, a bass player, drummer and a lil surprise. They have a high quality live performance playing in Colorado. I think you'd appreciate the work, the talent and the dichotomy of both the classical and progressive. Cheers.

"Also her cat..." nearly subscribed, just for that. Theory of the Scrunched Nose - actually, I think she's using it for certain timbres of scream. It will take me a lot ot time to characterize them (for myself... I believe others such as Melissa have done this a decade or more ago, but I'm stubborn so I gotta let me do it for me.... stupid me.) I am FAR from a false-cord aficionado, BUT, I am starting to hear all the little variations in sound production. And as you mentioned, this video gives an unparalleled chance to watch the digastric, mylohyoid, and geniohyoid groups, and their interplay with the infrahyoid to depress the larynx. Ya know, that thar Nose Scrunch MIGHT be an example of cross-division sympathetic contraction if she's manipulating the stylohyoid muscle or posterior belly of the digastric, since they get some innervation from the Facial nn (CN VII) ... makes a person go 'hm...' Do you think she'd mind if I put some micro-sized tension and volt-sensors all over her face and neck? A) it'd be a very Metal look. B) there might be some cool info to gather, if we can damp-out the common mode noise. Ah... sub'd. Thanks for the chance to wax nerdy.

It’s been way too long since you did some Jinjer! With dual tours kicking off now…one with Disturbed and one headlining on off nights, I think a revisit is due please! I think you’d really dig Wallflower, Vortex and Teacher Teacher
