The song (as it stands now) and the video is even more heartbreaking when you understand the symbolism behind the three women dressed in military gear. The first military woman gave her own daughter to her parents and went back to war. The second one returned the lost girl to her mom. The third woman sent a child to the priest (means the child died and her soul went to God, where she met her military mom in the same church who also died). In the end we see burning tank and a girl with Molotov which represents Russia and Ukraine.
It’s not a сопілка (sopylka). Kalush orchestra has a guy with сопілка as well, but the instrument you hear is a much rare тилинка (tylynka). And many- many Ukrainians (including me) got to know this instrument because of this song. English name of the instrument is an overtone flute.
The telenka (тилинка) is an "overtone flute" as you pointed, but that is not its "English name" but it's "musical category". Overtone flutes (which are quite a few) are played by two factors: how hard you blow and how you tap the holes (if any more than the ending one). The telenka, as any overtone flute, are hard to play in modern music (which requires the exact musical note to be played always), are even harder after singing, and even more while dancing. You can try playing overtone notes with a normal "recorder" (melodic flute, the one typical at schools), just look for "how to play harmonics in recorder" and you'll see how hard playing overtones is. So congrats to Kalush Orchestra for an amazing piece :-)
Telynka it used by the lead vocalist-- it has no finger holes, only open on the ends..... the sopilka is one of the instruments played by the background musician -Ihor Didenchuk- Vitalii Duzhyk and omg he is beatboxing while he is playing it. Ihor Didenchuk played it in Shum by Go_A There are other instruments that are not easy to notice because so much going on. . I can see more in the entry video from Feb.12, .and I hear more each time i listen and look for them. The Trembita you can see the breakdancer use it just before the rap sections start.
Tylynka (calf, heifer) is a folk wind instrument, analogous to the longitudinal flute of elder or willow [1]. It has only two open holes; length is different, but the standard is 85 cm. It is most often used by peoples living near the Carpathian mountains (Ukrainians, Poles, Romanians, Hungarians). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BBSS_a6Kfhg.html
Thank you for explaining! I wasn’t familiar with telynka before eurovision; I didn’t understand if it’s another type of instrument or is the flutist just playing theater
@@gadeaiglesiassordo716 do you know what he was playing... i thought it was the sopilka and he was also beatboxing while playing it .. maybe it was the selection performance i am remembering. I didn;t listen closely to the Turin stage because instruments are recorded in the live tv performance.
I love this song! I voted for it and it deserved to win. Ukraine usually have very interesting and good songs in Eurovision Song Contest and are usually very high up in the contest. 🇺🇦
Can you do last years entry, too? Go_A's Shum! Please? The video goes through Chernobyl and everywhere and is based culturally! One of their members were in this year's group too!
It's heartwarming to see someone appreciating the complexity of this song. It's all about contrasts in my opinion. Using rap as a genre when the lyrics are quite sweet, modern sound but with folk mixed into it, singing almost from a perspective of a child but with such power, energy and frustration etc. I love it!
A little notice about symbolism of the music video: a third woman gave her kid to the priest, which means that her daughter had passed away. Then woman also died and met her daughter again in the church. This breaks my heart

100% agree, they totally deserved to win 💖💖 Amazing song, vocals, rhytm, instrumental and the live performance at the ESC final!!! This video is heartbreaking and my heart bleads for the Ukrainien people 😪😪💖💖
I agree with all of your comments, thank you for your attention and perspective. I would actually love to hear more about the vocal style of the lead singer. Actually the sopilka is the the flute played ongoing by one of the guys in rags, regular member of the band. Too bad you can’t see hm most of the time. The vocalist’s flute is a tylinka, you can look that one up as well.
The 'rags' are a ghillie suit, but in the colors of the Kalush regionial flag (black/red) but not sure where the green fits in, I could be wrong. The vocal style is possibly traditional Ukrainian 'white voice' ...
@@mynameisnoonesbusiness4488 "The technique is based on an open throat and free volume with a bright color. It uses all types of registers depending on many factors. Sometimes it is close to a controlled screaming or simply calling." It has it's own article on wiki :)
This is song is really a masterpieces. the role of true artists is to send a messeage and it has so strong message for humanity. At the same time the vocal, the sound reach each particle of body and soul. This traditional fluet instrument sounds so magical, heavenly and at the same time we can see cemetry, church and mother who is saing final goodbye to her dead daughter. this is so heartwrenching. Innocent Ukrainian people are dying becasue of barbaric russian army. STOP WAR IN UKRAINE! 🙏💙💛 RUSSIANS - FIND HUMANITY IN YOURSELVES !
Thank U for your genuine reaction!! & for your position and support as well. Although tragic, but this war showed who is who and uncovered so many kind and good people all over the world. Thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! It made me really emotional. It hurts me to see so many people not understanding and not being compassionate. I’m so happy you spoke out! Slava Ukraine!! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Thank you so much for this video, Tristan❤️ it means a lot! I can’t listen to this song without tearing up. We appreciate all the support so much🇺🇦Слава Україні🙏🏻pray for Ukraine!
💙💛Great reaction, thank you! I believe they are the only ones who did not release an MV before the competition, so as NOT to get SYMPATHY VOTES nor to influence the voters. Their great stage, the lights, and most of all, their amazing live performance was deserving of the win, despite what the naysayers say!!! Here’s the history of the music vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3E750rkhciM.html While people are debating if they are worthy winners, they couldn’t care less coz the frontman and other bandmates went into fighting on the frontlines when they got back in Ukraine. One of their original bandmate didn’t participate in the competition for that same reason and so as most of the male singers/musicians in the country. Kalush wants to auction their trophy to donate the proceeds. They care more of their own people and their Motherland than other people’s pettiness. Shame on us! May God Bless them all!!! They need all our support and prayers. #StandWithUkraine 🙏🏼🇺🇦🇺🇸❤️
A bit about music instruments: it is totally ok not to know ethnic versions of well known instruments. This is not a sopilka. Sopilka it is analogue of tin whistle or recorder. It has a primary key and several holes musicians need to cover to produce different notes. The power of air flow determines the octave. Instrument here called tylynka. A bit more ancient one. It has no holes on a shaft and only the one hole at the end of a pipe, where air comes out. Musician covers it to separate notes and produce halftones, but the note itself is determined by power of air flow.
if you’re reacting to more eurovision entries i recommend italy’s bc it’s very interesting vocally ! italy’s entry (which was my favorite song) i would love for you to react to both the eurovision final performance (which was kinda weak imo) but also to either their sanremo performance or the jury’s vote one where their vocales were much tighter !!
What was really hard to watch for me as eurovision fan was when the house parties where. House party is when the participants filmed themself in their studio or in their living room or wherever they want and sing their own song but also other Songs of themself, eurovision winners or eurovision participants. In the house party video of kalush orchestra it was so heartbreaking to see them singing and playing next to sleeping bags and everything black and white.
your reaction and your support are very important to us, because this is actually happening in our country and it is all true, that is, we want a calm and peaceful life, we did not attack anyone, and we just wanted to live peacefully, and not now we have to die for our will
Aaaay you did make a reaction to the official video! As a Canadian who has Ukrainian grandparents, this entire thing hit me in an entirely new way. I watched the finals of Eurovision and I was crying like a baby when Ukraine won. I don't think a lot of people understand just how much that win means. On top of it being a stellar song (and a meaningful one), these guys had to go back afterwards and literally join the fight again. They pre-recorded a performance in case they weren't able to get out of Ukraine to perform live. And now, the award is being auctioned by them to raise money for Ukraine. Ukraine came out on top, although there were other very talented artists as well. And I feel that gives a sort of glimmer of hope that we will come out on top in the war as well.
Thank You for Your big heart ! Anybody should be indiferent to what is happening right now in Ukraine PEACE FOR UKRAINE ! #stoprussia #standupforUkraine 💙💛
You should really react to Spain's performance on Eurovision, they killed it! I know the vibe is not the same but still I'm pretty sure you will love it!!
Spain was really boring though. I can't even really remember the song anymore, i just remember it was just another half naked girl that sounded just like tons of others. If he reacts to sth else, then at least to France, because it also has a more traditional vibe to it.
My recommendation would be also to check out Ed Sheeran - 2step with Ukrainian band Antytila the lyrics in Ukrainian are very touching as well and the lead vocalist is very talented!!
Besides the flute, two important Ukrainian instruments (the trembita - an alpine horn and the bandura - a combination guitar/harp) make some key appearances.
@@louisesmith4251 unfortunately these aren’t shown. In the competition video in Ukraine they had the trembita on stage but in this version you need to listen carefully for both instruments.
I want to tell you that what you see is only half of what's going on. To understand the other half, you have to experience it. The second part is the aftermath of war. There's hunger, there's no medicine, there's animal fear every second of your life. Have you ever wondered what it's like to feel that every second of your life is your last, your children's... Have you ever been glad to eat from a garbage can, have you ever fed your child garbage, have you ever drank water from a heating radiator? That's what war is all about!
I think one true measure of lyrics is if they sound good even without the music. I put the lyrics to the initial rap section into a voice to speech bot and the syllables flow so well that somehow the bot sounded like it was spitting mad fire even with its stiff delivery.
the appearance of the author of the video is very similar to the appearance of native Indians. Maybe that's why he understood this video better than many Americans. Thank you from Ukraine.🙏
