BIG bummer the day I heard him being referred to in post mortem discussion. He was so talented, such a character, apparently a nice guy. And let's not forget: he is the one, they say, who came up with the name for the band-----Brian Jones style, at a moment's notice!
This is one of my favorite pieces on RU-vid. I revisit it often and am always overwhelmed by the power of their rendition of Todd Rundgren's song. The entire band is great but Chase soared in this one.
Two things: (2) I discovered and fell for this band during COVID and have watched their videos probably hundreds of times in the last three years. Lots of talent for a Georgia cover band. (2) Most if not all of their pre-2020 videos are in public venues -- bars, festivals, etc. -- but their live performances measure up to this studio-quality song.
No gimmicks. Just raw talent. Glad you discovered by favorite band. Watch more because they started singing live at 15. Harmonies have always been there.
At the defunct "Twisted Taco". Fs and Fs however, are far from defunct! Beth should hear "Helplessly Hoping". Unbelievably sublime harmonies of Tim, then-teenaged daughter Sammy and choir-mate Maggie.
Chase has one the best lower registers that you will ever hear. Her lead vocal on another Todd Rundgren classic "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" is also stellar. All of her lead vocals are spot on
I have been a professional Musician for 60 Years now I think I know a Great singer when I hear one, and Chase is the best she puts real Emotion in her voice,@@steve83333
If you want to see INCREDIBLE group harmony with just one mike, look up their cover of "Dedicated to the One I Love" --- it's absolutely mind boggling. F&F are why RU-vid was created in the first place.
Actually, they all record individually but film together. Tim is able to balance them because of that. He has commented that he often has to reduce the volume on his daughter Sammie because her high pitched voice tends to sound louder than it really is. So he does do mixing but there is no auto tune here. If you watch their early live videos you will see they all have their own mic and were again recorded on their own tracks so Tim was able to do some mixing for the videos, which is why they generally sound as good as the stuff done in Tim's basement. Also, the group doesn't rehearse nearly as much as you might think. For the live performances they usually had one rehearsal at the beginning of summer and then did a few shows over the summer break recording one of them. Thanks for the review. This group doesn't get nearly enough attention.
Very enlightening. I think the reason F&F are happening now is the way Tim set up the sound on those live shows at the taco joint so he was able to mix everything, as you say. People know that no band playing live that they've heard sounds that good, so it was really impressive.
One of my favorite Vocal Coaches on RU-vid reacting to one of my favorite bands on RU-vid! That could only happen on RU-vid! Love it! Thank you Beth Roar and thank you Foxes and Fossils!
I just love this group and can hardly wait each month or so for the next video to come out. They are excellent singers and musicians and Todd Rundgren has heard them do his songs and had nothing but praise for them. They do such a large range of styles and each of the three girls as well as Tim and Darwin get their chance to shine as lead vocalist. They started out recording their live performances about 10 years ago when there was no drummer and only one lead guitarist as well as only having two female singers. The make up of the band changed slightly over the years and then with all the girls gone off to college they stopped performing for a while. And then about 2 or 3 years ago all the members got back together and started recording in the studio. They haven't performed live in about 5 years but are planning a live performance for the end of the year. I'm so planning on being there. Hope to see you do more reactions to Foxes and Fossils, Beth. Love your channel.
The Beautiful placement and resonance of every vowel and of course the lockstep phrasing and enunciation, creates beautiful lush harmonic timbre and also makes my brain vibrate... as a former member of a top level choir singing everything from classical to modern pieces in English, Latin, Italian and German, this is the kind of blend you work hard to create, live in real time ... (AutoWHAT??) And you have to thank Todd Rundgren and God for this heavensent piece of music...
I quite agree. The harmonies and crystal clear lyrics go right through you. Todd only wrote the music, England Dan and John Ford Coley wrote the lyrics.
Beth, Thanks SOO Much for doing F.&F. they are Phenomenal!! Large Catalog on RU-vid, Looking forward to you doing ANOTHER F.&F. ! Going to check out your other channel Now. THANKS BETH!!
The saying for a long time was "the South will rise again." Is this group what they were talking about. These ladies can sing very, very well. I so enjoy their work! Speaking of runs, just wait for it. Chase is vocally just warming up. She gets with the program near the end. And she has a great range. And her voice is SO warm and tender. All that time Chase spent singing in church. Shows up here. Gospel?? BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beth, You are going to enjoy this so very much. This group's harmonies are tight and gentle. Their skill sets are off of the charts. The young lady singing, Chase saves some of the best for the end. Tim (black tee-shirt) has been in the music game for some time. Darwin has a rich low bass voice. Maggie Adams could sing a telephone book and make it sound good. Lastly Sammie adds her special twist. I think Todd would approve of this cover.
Such a smooth vocalization. You can really feel it not just hear it. Having worked with sound boards, using the one mic for a quartet may be old school but it does show how well the entire group melds so well together. And having another mic being used for a remote singer is so well done. Very well done. Todd would be proud.
@@gchristopherklug Tim does the same. He parses out each part's harmony, sings a scratch vocal for each vocalist to follow, they record it, and listen to the playback. If something sounds off, they tweak and retry. Yes, each part recorded separately and mixed, plus one take of the bunch of them singing together - actually singing, not lip-syncing - but that take's audio isn't used. In this video, Maggie was a couple hundred miles away, as was the bass player, so those video parts were sent in separately and mixed.
Beth, I hope you listen to other videos by F & F. Their first recorded performance was Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Nailed it before a live audience! The women were just teenagers at the time.
You have found my favorite cover band, they are amazing and no they do not rehearse much they are in three different states most of the time . just good old fashioned talent.
Check out their early live sets. In one series they’re practically in the parking lot of a taco place. Cars going by, people passing…,and they’re killing it! You can see the fun they’re having. The audio quality is first class!
That's a really nice version, never heard it before, and sounds great with the headphones on.. This channel has / is being a real musical education... Thank you Beth ...
Been watching them a decade as the arranger's daughter went off to college and returned, another married, one member passed away. They cover classic rock, pop, and country classics with expert precision and harmonies.
Hi Beth, great review of F&F. I happened upon them in February 2018, when I was on RU-vid searching for a version of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to rehearse to in the car. (I asked my husband and a friend to perform it for a festival a year away and my husband took the vocal part I usually sing, so I needed to practice it like it was a new song). RU-vid suggested Foxes and Fossils, and I was blown away by their performance. Later, I found out it was there VERY first live show, when Maggie and Sammie were 15! Fell down the rabbit hole and became a huge fan, happily attending both reunion shows in Atlanta next week and am pretty sure live is going to be just as phenomenal as all the live recorded videos, probably better. However, I am sad that Scott King will not be there to bask in the adoration he well deserves along with everyone else. You recommended checking out their channel, so it appears you've seen all those live shows. Tim's mixing from live audio rivals the best in the business, and there's never been an autotune assisted track in that bunch. If you're looking for recommendations of where to start after viewing Beth's review, I encourage you to check out Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Other classics that do the originals justice include Seven Bridges Road, Amie, Landslide, Royals, Here and Now, Barton Hollow, The Things We Do For Love, and the Night Before. To be honest, there is not a dud on their RU-vid channel. All their albums are currently in my car, with the Christmas CD in heavy rotation at the moment. (I also like their covers of some covers, like Senses Working Overtime) You think of a song with a strong harmony, and the odds are good they've done it. If you decide that this is a band you must see, there are some tickets left to see them in Atlanta.
Wonderful seeing this get recognized and appreciated. I love many of their incredible covers, but imho this one rises above all. Her soaring vocal just vibrates my core and almost brings me to tears. It's perfect!
A perfect cover. These folks are wonderful, smooth, warm, and quite talented. I believe the issue with these folks is the foxes sorta grew up. May I suggest that you watch and review F&F's cover of Neil Young's Harvest Moon. It is another beautiful cover....
Chase's voice sends shivers down my spine, she has the ability to make you think that she is singing to you personally. Sammie makes all the harmony's work, she can sing the phone book.
One way you can tell how incredible they are at mixing is how Maggie was recording this remotely (I think she was in college) and her background vocals harmonize with the others perfectly.
@@lynwessel2471 It amazes me that people who have found F&F over the years have become so much like family. I for one love their "human" stories such as the girls going to college. New fans may not know of that reference (you will) but i definitely think of all of them as family and follow them as such.
@@jasonfisher5811 Dont know if you've seen the interview with Darwin on John Marshall reaction land channel, but as he said the "celebrity" is down played , they think of their supporters as family and enjoy the interaction with them on Patreon, Fan Page etc.
Nice suggestion Tom and another excellent review, Beth! I always enjoy BOTH of your channels. Rundgren hit it out of the park with this one. A great song, covered by many, and F&F absolutely do it justice. I’ve found another group to add to my playlist!
Love them, the members are Tim Purcell( keyboards, acoustic, guitar) Sammie Purcell Tim's daughter Vocals) Maggie Adams(vocals) Chase Trurant who is lead on this song) Toby Ruckert ( Guitar)Scott King-bass)who just passed away a couple months ago.Johnny Pike(drums)Darwin Conort(Guitar)
Miss Beth, The talent in this little group seems to have no end! Todd wrote a dandy song with this ONE!!! In this video, Maggie Adams is somewhere else in this video. She is also a gifted singer! Check out Chase's upper end. The message of the song is spot on!! Thank you Beth
I like your description about chord construction and how it shapes the vocal harmonies. Todd utilizes so many colorizations with Min3, Sus4, Maj7, Dom7, and F&F always meet the challenge, as with so many vocal heavy selections and arrangements they cover.
Nice cover, but I was so excited to see Todd Rundgren finally getting the love he deserves. Maybe react to a few of his classics: "Can We Still Be Friends," "Hello, It's Me," etc.
Having recently done "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" with Chase again nailing the lead vocal, with the two that you mentioned along with "A Dream Goes On Forever" and maybe even "One More Victory" and F&F has a six song Todd Rundgren song book for the ages.
Beth, Chase the lady singing lead has a great, rich and warm voice. She is darn good, as are the others! Just wait until the end, Chase gets into it! These people have worked a lot together! As you will see & hear in a moment. They have several videos online. Please review more of their work. Was that fun or what?????
1st time I’ve watched one of your videos and I am already hooked! Liked and subscribed. By the way I’ve been a fan of Fossils and Foxes for a long time now.
Thanks Beth, I hope you do more F&F. Tim started recording these mostly for family, 10 years ago. Then Sweet Judie Blue eyes took off on RU-vid. I think you will particularly like their Mama & Papa covers & CSN&Y covers.
Thank you for reviewing this video, Beth! I’m a huge fan of F & F! It’s the harmonies that do it for me too! I sing in my church choir and just love harmonizing.
Not much auto tune here, watch some of their very early live performance videos and will hear how so great the vocals are.....they always have been very tight.
Chase has a warm and rich voice to be SO young. These people have several great videos. Just wait until Chase busts loose in a little bit!! It is very, very special..... At 6: something -- Shine on me! Love it!!!!!!!! Was that good OR what? Thanks lady!!!
Beth prepare yourself! These peach state folks are super good. All of their covers are on the money!! Dare I say perfect! Chase has a broad vocal range................ This cover gets better AND better! Note Chase's soul in her little run that is coming up.. I think Chase started singing in church! She is SO good.
These guys are great and Im subscribed to them . Go check out the rest of their recordings . The girls are fantastic . Maggie has a superb voice . They have really been around since 2010 when the girls were in high school . They were great then when they were playing in the parking lots of a taco eatery .
Chase Truran has her own RU-vid channel, sings a lot of old standards and jazz outside of F&F. I found these guys years ago and always wondered why Tim Purcell did not make it in Nashville as an artist or producer because he obviously has the chops and skills. I have loved watching Maggie and Sammie mature over time.
If you listen to The Uncovered Music of Tim Purcell interview- news section on the website, he tells about making the decision to give up on being a Nashville songwriter and chose being a stay at home dad for his girls and local musician nights and weekends.
I didnt know that Todd Rundgren had penned this song. I had figured he was a bit rock music type........Todd performed a few yrs. ago at the Beatles' Hollywood Bowl Tribute show.......a great version of "For The Benefit of Mr. Kite."
