I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. Phoenix She did sing live but they dubbed it for the DVD release. Both versions sound similar but the dubbed version gave a more crystal clear sound. (The artist goes back to the studio and re-records certain parts to enhance their performance.) I personally love the undubbed versions more, the rawness of her vocals during certain parts sounds pretty pleasant.

I do almost feel bad for Ari. She's so talented. But comparing anyone to Mariahs Daydream era is rough. It was her best vocal era. Her voice was still super strong (before the nodes started getting in the way) and her technique had improved greatly by then! Her technique was impeccable in those years!

To all those angry arianators out there: I am also an Arianator, WAAAY before I also became a Lamb. I checked Mariah out because at the beginning of Ari's career, everybody's comparing her to Mariah. I was intrigued, and BOOM! Mariah's mah kween. You can't complain that, "ooh, those clips are just bad" or, "Ari's better" because she's not. I've watched most of their performances, and I can tell, Mariah's the Queen.

Mariah's voice sounds flexible even on higher belts that's why she sounds better than Ariana. Ariana sounds she's struggling on higher belts, barely do rifts & vibrato just plain high notes.

Mariah Carey has always been a better vocal technician and musician than Ariana or most current pop artists, especially in her prime years (1990-2005). Ariana is a good singer, but comparing her to Mariah in her prime years almost a crime. People tend to forget Mariah's first vocal coach is her mother, an classically trained singer as well as a vocal coach. Mariah's only weaknesses are her vocal nodules and her stage fright.

Without being a hater, anybody who knows anything about singing knows that Mariah in her prime was almost peerless with her technique (and just about anything else to do with vocals!) and by far the greater singer when compared to Ariana and practically everybody else in the modern era. Ricardo Augusto I agree she is very rich in tone and she has a very deep in her characteristics in her music. Ariana Grande will never give you that she always sings in a high pitch it’s never in different tones. One thing people need to realize the era of when these performers came out the industry was totally different.

I think it should simply even be an HONOR to be compared to Mariah Carey. The fact that you have that level of talent to be measured up against Mariah is astounding as well. To be compared to daydream era Mariah is brutal in all honesty. She was simply so mesmerizing with her agility and flexibility in the way she used her voice.

This isn't me trying to be a stan or whatever but back in the day the only times that Mariah would ever lip was on overseas TV shows where they literally tell the artist to do so. Plus she's absolutely terrible at lip syncing so it's pretty easy to tell when shes doing it. All Mariah clips in this video were live.

@DANI S - Ariana also didn't make music in a time where power ballads were the moneymakers. She made songs that she wanted to, catchy, fun, cool. Whereas Mariah made songs to show off powerful vocals. I don't know whether you can judge who is objectively better - music is an art meaning it's subjective. Technique wise, they were sorta similar but yet again different. Both artists are / were going for different things when they wrote songs and performed. When Ariana was trying to sound like Mariah, her version of Emotions was amazing. They're both incredible and will be remembered for a long time.

I'll draw, since some do not understand (or just dont want to understand). Mariah, doesnt apply tension when she's hiting the high notes, she has good enunciation, she has no problems with pitch and no signs of nasality. PS: The lady also recognizes that Ariana is a great singer (even tho y'all are saying those arent her best vocals), but the fact is Mariah Carey sings circles around Ari's poor techinique.

Mariah is truly the greatest voice of our generation. Her technical expertise and her ability to wrap emotion on a lyric is unsurpassed. Few have come close (whitney, celine) but hands down Mariah's vocal ability is unique her buttery tone is prolific.

The reason why these comparisons exist is because they (a combination of media/fans) started saying Ari is the next Mariah. Also, Ari used similar breathy vocals in her first album and covered Mariah's Emotions (in the studio) which amplified the comparisons. Ari is a great singer, she is one of the bestin today's music, but if you are familiar with MC accomplishments n vocal technique, you would know she had no match in her prime.

Yes, it is quite pleasant, I heard her live whistles too and it was pretty good 👏 but still girl, a 25 year old Mariah was singing around in circles belting and whistling so effortlessly. Watch Tokyo Dome Mariah concert.... That's around Ari's age. I just find the comparisons silly. Mariah is Mariah and Ariana is Ariana.

Even if you take Mariah's wost clips when she had a cold, and Ariana's best showcase, Mariah has more resonance in her chesty notes, better pronunciation, ease of transition from chest to head to whistle, and thicker colorful voice. That doesn't mean Ari is a bad singer or is worst, she's the current rising star of this generation, but technically and vocally speaking Mariah in her prime beat everybody. Search up "Vanishing" Snl rehearsal, that was even younger, Mariah was only 20 years old, you see what I mean.

Mariah can take the note to the last word in a chorus and turn it into it's own melody line! In fact she can add a whole new melody line any where in a song and not lose the original melody line which happens a lot in jazz music! You can be listening to a song they go off in these rifs and get lost and be like what song am I listening to and it's not till they bring it home and you're like Oh yeah now i remember! lol

i'm not trying to be rude unlike you but, how is ariana "lazy" when she's very active and dances in her performances which is very hard to do. the fact that she can sing/hit high notes is impressive. mariah just stands there, so of course it's going to be easier to sing those high notes. like i have said before, don't bring the other person down just to uplift the other person. they're both amazing talented vocalists.
