Maynard doesn't have stage fright, it's just his latest persona, its about the music not the giver!
@mph8er
@mph8er 5 лет назад
Actually, it's well documented that he hates stage lights, both because of the glare and he thinks the focus should be on the music and that the lights draw the focus away from the music too much. The vast majority of their shows are not in the open like that Sober video, but I've never seen them in a concert that was in daylight where he shied away from the audience. Regarding the vocal effect, it's just a device called a talkbox so its a little of both. It's a guitar pedal with a speaker on it and the tube covers the whole speaker and goes up to the guitar player's mic stand. If he puts his mouth around it, he cuts off the audio, but if you partially open your mouth while holding it, it creates that effect. Mouthing 'wow' ends up making the wah pedal sound, though its not limited to that effect like a wah pedal is. Really interesting effect pedal (I own one). You can also find that effect in Man in the Box by Alice in Chains and It's My Life by Bon Jovi among a few others.

Adam Jones, the guitarist is using a "talk box" on his guitar solo. The pitch of the guitar is controlled by your voice because the guitar is feed into the microphone through a big tube.
@ivanb9073
@ivanb9073 5 лет назад
A talk box doesn't effect the pitch at all; that's still determined by whatever note(s) you're playing on the guitar. What it does do is effect the overall shape of the sound, i.e. the harmonic content.
@ivanb9073
@ivanb9073 5 лет назад

@wordclock5445
@wordclock5445 5 лет назад
The talk box feeds the guitar sound into his mouth via a small(ish) tube. Adam uses his mouth as a filter, and the output from his mouth is what we hear through the microphone. If you think about it, our mouth really is a formant filter that shapes the sound output from our throats to form or shape our words when we speak, or sing. The nose and sinuses and other resonances are also a part of how we sound, but for the talk box (the effect Adam uses in the video), it is using the mouth as a filter to shape the sound that is the most significant.
@ziggylayneable
@ziggylayneable 5 лет назад
@SilverburstGamer well I'm not about to disassemble my Heil talk box... but the way you're describing it is more akin to what it actually does and the way it works. I've had one for 25 years and I still don't know how it works but I love it. I know how to use it that's about it LOL

Maynard’s best voice doesn’t come out in Tool songs, imo. Puscifer tends to have better voice quality and range. Tool is built around instrumental music. Maynard does not have stage fright. The reason why he used to perform(and sometimes still does) up front, often nearly naked aside from body paint, and now is in the back, usually unlit and nearly a silhouette, is because the emotional investment and vulnerability he gave in those early years was returned more often than not with blind idiocy, objects being thrown at him, screaming imbecilic fanatics, ignorant flippants and tragic misunderstanding. He stays in the back and gives less of himself during his performances nowadays for his own physical and emotional protection as well as the fact that he feels he has become too often the only focal point of the bands he performs with and prefers to step out of the limelight and let the other members of the band step into the spotlight and receive more of the credit they so richly deserve. He sings about this in “The Patient”. P.S. The drumming you asked about is called Tabla Drumming. Danny learned from Aloke Dutta.

Great to see you doing TOOL/Maynard vocals again. Been looking forward to it! Actually, he started going in the shadows of the back to not be the focus of fans, down play it from other members and blend his vocals like he’s just another instrument. He was front and center from ‘91-99 before he started in ‘01. Yeah, around that time too, he started using later more effects and distortion as he’s gotten older having lost some of the power and range. And loss of so effortlessly. Plus, add some creativity to it. And prior at times to not blow out his voice with all live shows they do.

@@davidlapham4959 If you didnt have listen to a real live version of this song, you should. As soon as Maynard starts to sing you'll notice the differences. And if you have a good ear and understanding of music and sound, you might even notice the differences even bevor he starts to sing, during the instrumental intro. The difference you hear in this version isn't something that has to do with the way he sang but with the editing (adding reverb and stuff).

I love this reaction because at the beginning of this video the eagerness of the presenter, the 'youtubeness' is visibly drawn out of her by the gravity of the song and the realness of this band, you can actually see it. The awkward intro smiles and energy disappear into, oh dang this is an actual song and it's getting me, exactly what I felt when first hearing this song.

he doesnt actually have stage fright btw. its more of an idealogic stance-one railing against idol worship and wanting the entire band to get credit as a whole instead of the vocalist leading and in front, in the lights, getting all the attention as with most bands. they also usually have a huge video display in the background playing videos (at least partially created by the guitarist, Adam Jones; i saw them when they toured for Lateralus and the background videos then were amazinnng-had a transcendental flair to them much like that album-particularly in line with the Parabola video and the art of Alex Grey who i think cooperated with Adam for them.) to create an audio-visual sensory experience-they want that to get the attention it deserves and enhance the experience, which just wouldnt be the same with a vocalist in front in a goofy sunbeam commanding all the audience's attention. this is all something that was widely known in the late 90s/early 2000s, but has become sort of lost and obscured by mythos surrounding the band. also id like to see you react to H by Tool. the vocals are great there-very subtle and evocative in parts, and more of the tabla drums like in Pushit. great reaction btw, you always seem to nail it. your analysis of such a wide variety of vocalists is always spot-on. ( but more Jeff Buckley please! :) )

The "guitar voice" is a trick. A thing I've seen/read about when I was learning their songs. The guitarist apparently has a tube in his mouth that blows in air/sound. The air then leaves his mouth and goes into a mic. That way the way his mouth is formed actually modulates the sound of the guitar that goes into the mic.
@williamkramer9731
@williamkramer9731 5 лет назад
It's not stage fright. Theres interview footage everywhere. He stays towards or in the back as to not take away from the overall show and the band. He wants the people to take in the full experience rather than be focused on him. Maynard started to transition to that as tool started to take their music and shows into a more atmospheric direction. Lesson one- don't listen to all these try hards whom pretend to know anything. If you have interest, look at interviews and documentaries that Maynard is involved in. Stage fright was simply a rumour fired around because he backed off
