VOCES8 performs Henry Purcell's anthem 'Hear My Prayer, O Lord' at St Stephen Walbrook Church in London. Hear my prayer, O Lord: and let my crying come unto thee. (Psalm 102:1)
Purcell, the best composer of his time, played by Voces8, the best vocal group of its time, give us the best listener experience. Thanks so much to share it with us🙏.
This group of singers 🎶and arrangers and composers is key in the restoration of all that is good, true and beautiful. Thank you for visiting we the people out here in the youtubeland of bad news.
A truly great performance! The only thing that I wonder about is: Where have the microphones been? Or has the sound recording been done seperately from the filming?
whoa. the camera's slight tilting back and forth, makes me feel more strongly my unstable and desperate parts of my life that i ignore, and that part of me that wishes to call out to God: "I NEED YOU". mix that with the swirling and not-easily-resolved constant movement of the harmonies, and it has been a powerful choice for the camera to be used in this way
...a truly misguided video effort of a gorgeously preformed anthem: the center of gravity becomes of the videographer and completely draws attention to itself and has the unintended consequence of distancing the viewer emotionally from the performance, VOCES8 was done a disservice here.
Do you know of any other vocal ensemble with both contraltos and countertenors? It works perfectly here but I am not aware of any other group that does that.
Without a doubt, my favorite Purcell piece. WITHOUT A DOUBT! Love it. You folks sound absolutely lovely. My only constructive criticism is that the bass line is hard to hear. There were some points I really wanted them to be stronger. Nevertheless, just lovely.
Great performance, as always! Please, never use this cinematographic conceit of strolling creepily toward the choir (whom we want to hear and see) ever again!!!!
Magnificent performance as always. Weird, creepy, amateurish camera work-nowhere near your high standard. Distracts from the wonderful music. Just sayin’.
Holy moly. Fantastic. Congrats and thanks. Saw you in NYC, btw. It was amazing. What is your secret sauce? Srsly, I wish you would break it down in some vlog type post... please...!
Glorious, moving, graceful....except that I found the camerawork very distracting. I’d think the musical performance alone would be saturating enough for most fans. Thanks VOCES8!
Stunning. Love the slightly higher key too! It seems to change the ambience of the piece to a slightly more desperate crying unto God. Also fantastic tuning at the end to leave the open chord and there be no hint of what kind of chord it is! Stellar stuff!
Just a foot note to my comment of 10 months ago. So many folk moaning about the “ camera work” !. For myself, the sounds here are so completely wonderful, it baffles me how any listener, would even Be distracted by this !.
I could not admire, respect, or enjoy the music and the singing more than I do; this is as good as it gets. But, writing as respectfully as I can, please don't use this camera technique again. Some of us get motion sickness within seconds; for that reason, this video is unwatchable. I'm a fan and a subscriber. I don't mean to be rude. But please don't do this to us again. Thank you.
@@bonnieslotnick8944 Sometimes, a pause before posting can go a long way. My mother used to say, if what you are going to say is not kind, don't give the ugly part oxygen and voice it. A tip is to imagine you are the person who just spoke. He is a fan and a subscriber, he wants to watch them sing. That is not unreasonable if he is watching them online rather than putting on a disc, say. That really can be figured out!
Purcell (in Venetian dialect, piglet) is, would be a demi-God had he had the patience to write pieces like this 10 times longer! Purcell gives you a short view of heavenly bliss.. Voces8.... no words would suffice,
The dramatic effect lends emphasis to the prayers of CHILDREN today whose lives are in danger of suffering and death at the hands of abject evil. LORD ☦️JESUS CHRIST HEAR OUR PRAYER👶
