Steve Walsh (the guy in the shorts and tube socks) has one of the top 5 voices of the 70's and even does hand stands in concert, Robbie Steinhart (other guy singing) was a orchestra trained violinist, the drummer is also one of the top 5 drummers of the 70's as well, Kerry Livgren (blonde guy playing guitar) was the song writer and penned this and Dust in the Wind, the final guy Rich Williams (guy in the tuxedo) is a phenomenal guitarist in his own right and played more than 40 years before missing his first concert date. Yes they are my favorite band. :-)

Val, 1976. Steve Walsh is the singer and he is great. Check out their song "Journey From Mariabronn" to hear an incredible vocal. Technically, Steve Walsh has an "oo" vowel that cuts like a knife. He is one of my all-time favorite singers.

This was 1978, not 73. This was their 3rd last song in the set. They were tight as hell from the very start! Great video, goes straight to the point, no unnecessary rambling.

This song wasn't even written until 1976, so it can't be a live performance in 1973! It was written by the lead guitarist w/ the long, white blonde hair - Kerry Livgren, known as "the Maestro" because he was such a great songwriter & orchestrator & lyricist. Lead singer - Steve Walsh. The speed up was due to the adrenaline of live performance.

Actually before college. Some of them knew each other from all the previous unknown garage bands. Phil and Kerry were keeping tabs on each other way before with White Cover Jamming in New Orleans late 60's. White Clover needed Kerry to write and Kansas III finally came together to make what you hear today.

Kansas was and IS amazing. Kerry Livgren Blonde on guitar. Rich Williams 2nd guitar in Tux, Steve Walsh gym shorts multi instruments and lead vocals, Robbie Steinhart violin, tambourine vocals, Dave Hope bass and Phil Eheart ( sp ) on drums. Phil and Rich are still touring with Kansas. The band replaced a few members one at a time. Kerry was the founder and main writer but Steve and Robbie also wrote lyrics and music. This band was HIGHLY UNDERRATED and still is. Most of their music was much more Prog than Rock. Because of this, despite radio hits and sold out concerts to this day, they have been denied a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. They and Emerson, Lake and Palmer are pretty much blackballed simply because they had talent.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way.😎😎😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio.

Steve Walsh was SO HOT! I was a little too young to appreciate him and Kansas during this time, but my older sisters were way into them and Steve Walsh was among the many eyes the sister I shared a room with had plastered from floor to ceiling on posters, and I, being very shy and modest (still am) had to get dressed in the closet because all these heart throbs were staring at me! But it only took a couple more years until I discovered how hot this guy was ...and many others😜 Brings back so many memories! And now when I see him...(btw, I know his doppelgänger...married to one of my best friends 🤗😜)...I realize just how talented this guy and the whole band were! Thanks for sharing!

Lorie-Harley Flinchum I hate to break your heart but I dated a guy for four years from about 1997 to 2000 or 2001. He was going to Georgia State and working on his sociology degree and Steve Walsh‘s wife was in college with him!!! Doesn’t that freak you out? She was older but she was working towards a degree in social work, & I guess it was just something that she wanted to do. When my boyfriend at the time told me that, My heart skipped a beat .. that was back in 1997 so it’s been a while.. I just thought that it’s a small World.

I think you are spot on when it comes to their tightness, professionalism and performance. That is spot on! And, as you say, there are few, if any, bands that can equal the talent of the 70's and 80's, and even early 90's. Since then, things have gone to hell. But I get a feeling, mostly with very young artists, that there may be a renaissance. I truly hope so...

Qthelost I love that lead singer‘s voice!! This song came out in the 1970s. I remember my dad taking our family to see the movie “ Heroes” & this song was the ending soundtrack to the credits. I was about nine years old walking out of the movie theater after watching this movie. It was about the Vietnam war and how the veterans ( The lead actor in particular)!returned back from the war with PTSD and being treated so horribly bad by people, & I was bawling. I couldn’t believe how that movie touched me but really that song was what made me cry. I could’ve held it together had it not been for this song.

Actually the main keyboard Steve Walsh played was a Hammond B3 organ - very widely available to the public. Livgren, on the other hand, played some of the harder to get (for then) keyboards including the mini-Moog. Oh, and lest we forget just hopped up on cocaine Walsh was at this point, causing the manic frenzy in his performances like the handstands and kickjumps on the keyboard.

Hello Val, you're the prettiest girl I've ever seen with grey hair yet with many of mine I could add way more... lol. I go back a long way even before Way Son. My boss was a southern rocker and invited me over. First song I heard was off of the title track Song For America called Down the Road. That song was all over the place jamming. Kinda like Deep Purple. Then the next song was Song For America. Totally different song. Sounded like Beethoven, Bach, and other composers all incorporated into one very melodic song. My favorite of all time. Their songs are so dynamic and diverse. That was it for me. I had a cassette recorder and asked him if I could borrow it. Then not even a month after, Bad Company was coming with Kansas. It was the first time Bad Co. was in New Orleans but I was in it for Kansas. Bad Co. was good too but Kansas was obviously the premiere band at the time but really was not. They came through the front entrance of the municipal auditorium but I was close to the stage. I heard the crowd roar. I'm looking at the stage. Where are they? A surprise attack from my rear. Don't remember which ones but at least 3 of them are playing bag pipes dressed in kilts proceeding up the main isle slowly. You are right. They didn't have the many songs as now including Wayward Son so the songs were not rushed and not the best performance that they are capable of that you saw. They got up on stage and NAILED all of it. The crowd at the auditorium went crazy. Backing up bands were no more when Leftoverature was out. I knew it was Kansas when I first heard the vocals on WWS back when they had good radio stations. I can on and on about them but have a thesis already. Kerry Livgren, the blonde hair was the main writer guitarist and keys, Phil Ehart drummer, Robbie Steinhardt violin and vocals. Steve Walsh soprano vocals and keys, bongos. Rich Williams acoustic and lead guitars. Dave Hope on bass.

Well.... I donno if it was released but their first album was actually in 1970. Wikipedia has the history but Kerry (writer) was trying to get Kansas formed since then. He kept tabs with Phil. White Clover had many members of the Kansas who were a group playing in New Orleans gigs. Interesting history how they got "Kansas III" together. Kansas 1 and 2 failed and White Clover needed a writer. They recruited Kerry and added Robbie the violinist. He didn't want a psychedelic band name and changed it to the Kansas 3 as you know today. He took the last part of one of the 1970 album songs and incorporated it into The Wall on Leftoverature.

I would suggest you take time out to listen to RUSH - only one vocalist - Geddy Lee (Bass player), together with his two colleagues - Neil Peart (Drummer/percussionist), & Alex Lifeson - Guitars......if you want "tight", then look no further; & it's true to your assertion - these individuals were professionals - no glamour or glitz, just pure, unadulterated, & conscientous focus on their performance...hell, autotune wasn't even a glimmer in the eye of the music corporations then (thankfully). In truth, I wouldn't give you tuppence for today's modern contemporaries - or possibly a small handful...the rest are just dross...it was ever thus.
