Great analysis! The guys can be goofy and silly but still sound awesome. This had a bridge written by Geoff. Eventually he's going to give in and compose an entire song. Even though Bucky choreographed Monster Mash for Geoff, he didn't do the choreography here -- Geoff did. Though he did give Bucky the gist of what he wanted and let Bucky go crazy, dancing differently on every take.

The fun part about this song is that I used to sing it when I was around 7 or 8. I'm 58 now, and it's cool that this song has lasted through the years. Thing is, this tune is ENDLESS, you could go for Days adding onto the Drunken Sailor song. One summer camp the counselors challenged us to this song to see how long we could go for. :D They surrendered after ten minutes. We made it last an hour!

You can hear that metronome in Home Free's From the Vault series. They've just restarted the series with #24 this month after a long dead space, now that they got the new guy.

The drunken sailor is Matthew "Bucky" Buckner, a member of the group back in the 4:2:Five days. He also appears in the minis I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) and Candy Caravan Escapade. He was also the choreographer for Geoff's Monster Mash video. The guys do sing along with the track as they are filming (No metronome but there is a click track). Geoff's lowest note is a D1 subharmonic at about timestamp 1:25. You've seen Jose in the Hoist the Colors and My Mother Told Me videos. Geoff wrote the music and lyrics for the bridge. Fun (or creepy) facts: The lyrics for Drunken Sailor have a darker meaning than what they appear to be. Putting him in the long boat can either mean sticking him in the boat lashed to the side of the ship until the swaying and heaving causes him to be sick and sober up, or to actually put the longboat into the water with the unfortunate pirate inside, having it trail behind the ship at the mercy of the ship's wake. Shaving his belly with a rusty razor might induce tetanus or at least a nasty infection. Sticking him in a scupper (the drain holes on a ship's deck) with a hose pipe on him means to lay him, face up, with his head in a scupper, then to hose him down with cold, disgusting bilge water from the bottom of the ship, Putting him to bed with the Captain's daughter actually means to tie him down on the deck and lash him with a cat-o-nine-tails.

This is one of those pieces where it's not a cover, it's an upgrade.

Watch the camera swing and bounce to emulate the waves bouncing the ship. Geoff wrote a bridge for the song. He is beginning to do that more often. Come on, Geoff, write us an original Voiceplay song!

I notice not many talk about the camera movement: it's moving not strait flat but waving like the set was on (calm) water. Enought to be noticable but lightly/small enought to be ignored.

Geoff is now in the havit of adding a bridge to a song to make it less repetitive. He did it with his Man of Constant Sorrow, and even Golden Hour, and in this too. Layne's drum sound and rhythm here is that of a bodhran, or Irish hand drum. To the best of my knowledge they do sing along with the prerecorded track. It is possible to see that. It has been remarked that Geoff now sings in sub, rather than just producing single notes. Very impressive. If you've seen My Mother Told Me, you've seen Jose Rosario Jnr before. He was also in Hoist The Colours.

Bucky is an old member from waaaaay back, and he choreographed Geoff's "Monster Mash." He's been a background character in some shorts and sang in "500 Miles" with an exaggerated Scottish accent. Jose was also in "Hoist the Colours" and "My Mother Told Me." He's basically their go-to pirate captain. He also did a Disney short... the name is escaping me, the vulture song from Jungle Book... with him and Eli doing Scouse accents that even impressed Scousers.

If you haven't seen Jose before, you haven't seen their Hoist the Colours.

They did such a wonderful job on this one! What a different vibe! Like Geoff says at the end, ridiculous. At the same time, brilliant! 😍

Oh yes, Jose is in other VP videos, he is in Hoist the Colors and My Mother Told Me and some minis. He is amazing. Love Bucky in this, he needs to come 'round more often!! They turned a Sea Shanty into a tavern song

Jose has been in their versions of My Mother Told Me and Hoist the Colours. Hoist the Colours is absolutely wonderful!!

I like to think of all those tempo changes from fast slow kind of like being the waves on the ship. The section with Layne and his little toys I believe is a nod to their recent mini of the Wellerman. Watch Eli’s face as the whale gets closer to the ship and when it finally catches the ship to put his head down in despair. They had so much fun with this. I’ll go back and watch it over and over trying to catch new little subtleties. I especially like when Layne is beatboxing but still pouting because Jose took his boat away😠.

BTW if you don't know the Captain's Daughter is a cat of nine tail whip.

The drunken sailor is Bucky who used to belong to 4:2:Five before it was VoicePlay. He is currently works at Disney World as a voice actor. Geoff's line about Carve him up (with a wooden spoon no less) followed by Eli in a British accent is a tribute to Alan Rickman's line in Robin Hood. Have you done VoicePlay's Creep yet? Eli did arranging, lighting, direction. and it is well worth the time.

I just love VoicePlay(ing) songs. The BTS was hilarious and so was the video. No matter that this was a comedy the harmonies were awesome! And Layne just killed with the percussion!
