The highly anticipated Voigtlander Nokton 28mm f/1.5 ASPH builds on the fantastic Nokton 35mm f/1.5 ASPH Lens But should you wait?
In this concise review, I put the Nokton 28mm f/1.5 ASPH through its paces:
Blazing f/1.5 aperture: Does it live up to the ASPH hype? Edge-to-edge clarity or corner softness?
Dreamy bokeh: Can it render smooth, buttery backgrounds like its sister lens?
Build quality and handling: Is it a tank like a Leica or a plasticky pretender?
Value for money: What does this lens bring that others don't?
Should you wait for the Thypoch Simera 28mm f1.4 ASPH FLE Lens?
Check out my review to find out more.
Big thanks to Riceball Photography for providing the Voigtlander lens for review: riceballpho...

Great review and I will be getting the 28mm voigtlander. I have tried the 35mm Simera Typoch a few weeks ago and my mate Samuel (Streetlife) made a RU-vid about it. What I found was that 1. the Simeras metering distances were completely off. so you focus on something 5-7m away and it would show 3-4m on its scale. This happened on his preproduction 28mm and my final 35mm. My lens also started to make a squeaking sound from the first day. I returned it, but the look and optical quality was great. Looking forward to the 28mm voiglander Nokton...

1,5 year ago, in London, I ran into the limited edition of the 28mm matt black Summicron-M with the build-in hood and the greyish lettering. It looked so stunning on my M10-P that I just had to buy it. It now sits on an M11-P and I can’t imagine ever wanting another 28mm. So, in a sense, Leica cures you from your GAS. The IQ is quite stunning too, by the way ;-)

Been patiently waiting for both! - I've got the voigtlander in route because it was the first one i could get... hope to get a typoch one soon and be able to compare and then return one of them... I'm hoping the voigtlander is the better lens because I'd prefer the smaller size/weight (I picked type 1 because of the weight savings vs type 2).. but if the typoch blows it away I'd be ok with dealing with the larger size... its great to have options! - I agree it would be nice to have a damn hood in the box.. it sucks having to buy one on Amazon for it. - hoping the voigtlander is as good as the 28mm Ultron and 50mm 1.2 (used to own both at one point and both were fantastic lenses)

I'm in the market for a fast M-mount 28, so was glad to learn here that the Voigtlander's optical performance is "great" and so is its mechanical handling. But crikey, so much angst about the fact that Voigtlander doesn't include a lens hood, that the Type 1 lens can't be had with the fancier knurling of the Type 2 lens, and that the Thypoc Simera 28/1.4 (which he doesn't actually have and hasn't yet tried) comes with more tchotchkes...? I'm definitely interested in a heads-up comparo between the Voigtlander and the Thypoc, but could we maybe have a little more, er, focus on actual performance and less on whose Kool-Aid tastes better? Don't get me wrong... I enjoyed the presentation, this is just "tough love"...
@btonelli
@btonelli 5 месяцев назад
Hi thanks for the comment and feedback. I actually went into detail on the lenses performance but there comes a point where if I get too technical, only a small amount of viewers will actually watch. Majority of people want to know: how does the lens perform wide open, is there vignetting, how is the bokeh and is there CA in the image wide open. In terms of build quality, Voigtlander isn’t going to make a 28mm f1.5 cheap feeling or not working correctly so I’m trying to get to the points more vs lingering on aspects that may not interest most. I reviewed the Thypoch 35mm which is essentially the same build quality of the 28mm so I have an understanding what’s in store. Performance optically is the one thing we don’t really know for sure yet. A follow up video will be coming out comparing three lenses which I believe you will enjoy. Btw I do appreciate the comment, just also giving my reasoning for the flow and content given in the video.

I also like very much, the voigtlander retro SLii-S set of lenses for the Nikon F-mount. Again, these have silver noses, as an option to the design. The size of this lens for the focal length and speed is very appealing. When the V2 doesn’t have the additional focus pin/lever screwed in, how does it feel using the standard tab? In this area you already have 7 artisan TT artisans and others. Should the prices be half maybe but your Thypoch are VERY expensive for a Chinese company. Being able to charge high value is possible only if you have a proven record of performance and reliability that Leica has but also Voigtlander. I think I know why Voigtlaender is not including the hood. They only seem to include the hood where the hood is specific to a single lens, e.g. the 50mm f1.0 Nokton which comes with a hood. For when a hood fits multiple different focal lengths lenses, they won't include it with each lens. It kind of makes sense, the hoods are expensive. Why would I want to be forced to pay for the hood three times if I get three lenses coming with the same hood and the price of the hood baked into the lens price? Not including the hood allows them to keep the lens price somewhat lower and have consumer buy the hood once. The chrome ring apparently easier deals with wear and tear on attaching the metal lens hood, that's probably why they don't paint it. I wish they would do what they did with the 1.0 Nokton for all of their lenses. I think the Thypoch might also be a great choice. But I would think the Voigtlaender is going to be that little etch better with flare resistance, sharpness and build quality. It's not THAT much more expensive when you factor in the brass build. And with Voigtlaender, I know I can get stuff repaired on warranty in the US without a hassle - not sure how Thypoch would handle such a case.
@btonelli
@btonelli 5 месяцев назад
A hood is cheap and not that expensive to make. Also if Thypoch and or other companies can include with the same price or cheaper than Voigtlander, I’m sure they can include without increasing the pricing. The chrome ring may be that but then why do companies like Leica, Nikon, Canon not use this chrome ring on their lenses. The Chrome can also cause flares when shooting in sunlight. Yes you are right for warranty on the lens. That maybe the one thing that I feel puts Voigtlander ahead. Thypoch is new so we don’t know how they will handle such issues
@thedarkslide
@thedarkslide 5 месяцев назад
@@btonelli The Voigtlaender hoods are machined and feel substantially better than other hoods, I would go as far and say the Voigtlaender hoods are better than the old school full metal hoods that came with Leica M lenses in the 1950s and 1960s. Better quality than anything else I have tried. Yes, USD69 feels expensive and they probably have a good margin, but I'd rather pay USD69 once for a premium hood than paying USD30 more for the lens three times for three lenses shipping with a lesser quality hood. Just saying that I can understand Voigtlaender's reasoning here. I am ordering my Voigtlaender 28mm type II today, and the lens hood is in the basked with the lens. Not a big deal.
