I have the Ranger 2000, which has the exact same wing and tail/empennage. The flaps are effective enough so all the work with flaperon and crow seems a bit unnecessary. I would also put the servo horns in the tail pointing upwards instead of down as you did here, as it would protect them better when landing on grass. Thanks for your very good and interesting videos. 👍

You're very welcome. Keep in mind lots of stuff has changed since we filmed this, so please do take that into consideration when thinking about doing it yourself because, there's considerably easier ways to accomplish even better results now-a-days. Thanks for watching, and hope when you compare it against current technology, you'll see this pretty clearly We have done a several more modern sail planes, if you're curious...in fact just the other day, we did a sail plane...not to poo-poo this plane, which was awesome, the Radio Setup may be tough to copy, since many of the parts we used aren't even available anymore. www.brianphillipsrc.com/sailplanes

Please do, it's been working well for me for about a decade or so...soon I have to make the very tough decisions to copy it myself. I want to do this setup, only make THREE designated areas... One for metal work, one for wood work, and one for hobby projects....and maybe one for another hobby project, so I can have a more lengthy project going while I work on smaller projects. Hope to share this part of our lives with you all, as it unfolds. We hope to keep your audience as we work through those parts of our new property :)

Thanks for all info,Spektrum user here,seem to be in a minority.. By the way,phoenix build,they do suggest servo and control arm holes to use,it's in the print. I suppose experience is best teacher,but I'm still at a careful reading stage.

That's weird, I guess I missed that part in the manual. Sometimes these things will change over time, so maybe you got a different copy of the manual??? Either way, she flies like a day-dream!!!

The Phoenix 2K V2 is by far the best designed of the Phoenix Series. Unfortunately, mine is sitting in my winter house (in Phoenix) collecting dust. By the way, the horn backer bumps go away from the foam so it doesn't decrease and weaken the foam structure.
@BrianPhillipsRC

I thought that might be the correct way, but then you have drag???

The manual does not mention how to free off the control hinges. What i mean is..... Am i supposed to cut the polystyrene away with a modelling knife on the hinge line? Surely the plastic hinges should hold it. Otherwise they are very stiff
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Pinch hinges are sometimes okay, and other times they fail quickly. You have to decide how you want to proceed. It's not hard to cut them free, then install a hinge, but you don't have to do it this way, if you'd rather have pinch hinges. What I mean is that you have the flexibility to do whatever you feel is best.

Thanks for all your help, especially with the decals. My control horns are different, they did not come with screws and the backing plastic has slots that mate with little arms that come off the back of the control horns that protrude through the control surface. Am I supposed to use glue on these or do they lock into place. TIA.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
You can glue on the flat part and then just stick them through. That's what I would do at least. If you feel like they will CLIP together good enough, then you could give it a try...BUT just use care they won't come undone with servo movement.

Hey, great vids. Just one thing, bit of a noob question: when balancing the Phoenix, what are you using for weights and most importantly, how should it look when properly balanced? I always worry that I’m too nose or tail heavy. I know a little nose heavy is better but can you show the pitch of the fuse, side on while balancing, so we/I can see what “properly balanced” should look like? Thanks mate, great vids, really helpful and a good laugh too 😉👍🏼
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
I almost always use the battery to make adjust the CG. Some use dead weight, like lead weights, but I can't bring myself to use dead weight, BUT you can generally use LESS all up weight, since you can get the weight further out in the nose or the tail of the plane.

@BrianPhillipsRC

yeah, seems kinda crazy to not have a proper hing, but then again, some of these planes are made pretty cheap... That being said, the Phoeinx V2 is awesome!!!

I liked the video series, and especially liked the way that the crow configuration could really slow the plane down. I have a 6-channel radio. Is it possible to set the flaps up using one channel and having a "Y" cable from the receiver to each servo in the plane? Also, were you using two channels for the ailerons?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
As for a "Y" Cable for both flaps - yeah, but builder be ware, you need them to mount them in opposite directions to get them BOTH to move the same direction
@chksix
@chksix 5 лет назад
Starting at 1:23 you showed the control horn back plate and mentioned the bumps and said there was a right way and a wrong way but you never clearly showed the correct way. So, which way do you think is the right way?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 5 лет назад
Sorry about that. The FLAT is supposed to go FLAT against the foam (regardless of which surface you're dealing with). Some will argue that I'm wrong, but I'd day there will be a far MORE threads exposed beyond the plastic doing it the "other" way... ...that being said, you can really kinda do it either way :)
@chksix
@chksix 5 лет назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC I'm with you. I don't see how anyone would think it could go the other way. The way it came across to me was that the bumps should be against the foam. I just wanted to know why. I'm always eager to learn new things. Love your videos.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 5 лет назад
P.S. I've done it both ways, just to experiment, and if the screws were the correct length, that would be a really nice way to do it, but if you want to cut them down to length, it's very tough, since they get hot and melt the plastic :(
@davidmulcahy4864
@davidmulcahy4864 5 лет назад
The bumps should go into the foam as they locate the back plate properly and stop it rotating

Desperate for guidance on flap & elevator compensation setting for my new Phoenix 2400. Just regular independent flaps on my 3-way D switch. Flap % (and most importantly elevator compensation %) as my maiden flight was a maiden crash. So erratic and uncontrollable that I didn't have any time to learn by trial and error. Help appreciated!

amazes me that these companies do all of this engineering to produce a plane that looks nice and flies well, only to screw up the small details like having the linkages not be right. A good number of people in the hobby or getting into the hobby are looking for an engineered solution

Brian I thought you had to use spectrum receivers with spectrum transmitters 🤔
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
You have to use a compatible protocol... Spektrum uses DSM, then DSM2, and now DSMX. DSMX and DSM2 are generally considered to be "compatible" as the DSMX can be "Forced" back to DSM2, in many cases, but there are some limitations you might run into. Basically, the 2.5 GHz is the frequency range where the Transmitter and Reciever operates, but the WAY that it operates is the "protocol". For example, you might want to use an Orange Rx, which is DSM2 or DSMX...or a Lemon Rx which is DSM2 or DSMX, or they also use DSMP (Which is a joke, since it's ACUTELY just DSMX). But if you ran Futaba, they'd have another protocol, which is FHSS, or FRSKY which is OpenTx, and so on and so forth. There's also some other "toy grade" protocols out there, and some are Crystal based still! Lots to learn on this front. Don't feel bad if you're confused...it took me a few years of screwing around with this stuff to even understand there WAS a difference, but there is. Hopefully, this answers your question.

I only have about 50 other places I can get "deals", and if they pull the rug out from under your feet, I just don't have time for this type of business. Glad it's not just me, but still go there for small stuff. I feel dirty splitting business like this, but at some point, the customer experience has to come into play. Sad, really...

I'm not sure if there's a "failsafe" which would need to be reestablished to keep things going straight in the event of a brownout...so the short answer is NO, but if you'd et a more sophisticated Lemon-Rx receiver, you can actually do failsafe, and in this case, you might need to rebind.
