Volcanic eruption in Tonga reshaped Pacific seafloor - BBC News

Scientists have discovered the true ferocity of a huge volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga in January.
When the underwater mountain erupted, it sent ash and water-vapour half-way to space, and generated tsunami waves across the globe.
A survey by New Zealand and UK vessels has now fully mapped the area around the Pacific volcano.
It shows the seafloor was scoured and sculpted by violent debris flows out to a distance of over 80km (50 miles).

Yes. I thought a hanglider had hit the house. Animals were startled. You could hear some of the louder explosions sometime after the first shockwave. In pre Covid 2020 we saw the smoke from Australia blot out the sun, then during Covid the 'tsunami' evacuations after the East Coast quake & Kermadec 8 pointer being close together , then we heard Tonga's volcano from 1500 miles away. The weather in Northern NZ and Eastern Australia has been uncharacteristically wet too. Some meteorologists say due to the eruptive plume.

Humans have not opened higher senses, so God has used extreme weather, volcanic eruptions... to let people understand that there is a God on earth. God knows all the deeds of each person. We have dodged a bullet. If this occurred on land it would’ve been a Pinatubo level event or even worse. A high scale VEI 6. Seawater met face to face with millions of cubic meters of magma. Truly terrifying. Even though the 18th and 19th centuries were quite bad in terms of large volcanic eruptions the lull has worn off. But another event of this scale statistically won’t happen for another 30-60 years.

Yes and according to reports the 1817 Famine that killed thousands in Europe and other places. Northern hemisphere I think, was caused by the eruption of two volcanoes. One was in Indonesia. Mt Tambora that erupted in 1815. It was the largest recorded eruption in 1300 years. There was another one in the Philippines in 1814. Several of my relatives including a 3rd Great Grandfather. died on the island of Korcula from Starvation. The priests declared they died from Dalla Fame. There was also ongoing conflicts with massive refugee movement that exacerbated the food supply. According to this article the debris was spread over 100km, so this Tonga one was a bit less at about 80 km. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

@@gdr55 It being a submarine eruption certainly dampened its ferocity. Even at that the fact it could spew debris in such a large radius through such a dense medium as water is quite terrifying. The water stopped all the ash and most of the sulfuric gasses at least but it’s still causing weather chaos in Australia. It thoroughly deserves a VEI 6 categorisation in my opinion. I’m pretty sure the crater floor has subsided by several hundred meters also. Thankfully the threat volcanos pose has been reduced by advances in science and agricultural techniques. We should never be as vulnerable to famine again.

I'm curious, maybe someone could help me with this, would this have been much worse if the volcano was on the surface instead of underwater? I don't know how far under it is, or if when it went off, it was similar to a large enough asteroid hitting water and just basically vaporizing it like it isn't there. I'm assuming it would have been much worse, but would love to ask someone with some better knowledge on the subject

@CC-yl1fb Год назад
It depends on the power, a strong volcano underwater will have the water absorb some of the impact, but if its strong enough it will cause tsunami's. If it's on the surface it would eject more ash and debris upwards into the atmosphere which could affect global temperatures (unlikely to cause that much damage on this scale though)

Worse? I think there were zero injuries but an island lost phone and internet for a short while.

The reason why it was so powerful was because it was underwater, the water mixing with magma is what caused it's strength. So no it's not likely that it would've been worse if it occured above ground level.

What a real Climate Scientist has to say about Global Warning. This Australian Ian Rutherford Plimer is an Australian Geologist, Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Professor of Mining Geology at the University of Adelaide and the director of multiple mineral exploration and mining companies. He has published 130 scientific papers, six books and edited the Encyclopedia of Geology. Born in 1946. Residence: Australia Nationality: Australian Fields of study: Earth Science, Geology, Mining Engineering. Institutions: University of New England, University of Newcastle, University of Melbourne, University of Adelaide. Alma Mater: University of New South Wales, Macquarie University. Thesis: The Pipe Deposits of Tungsten - Molybdenum -- Bismuth in Eastern Australia (1976) Notable Awards: Eureka Prize (1995, 2002) Centenary Medal (2003) Clarke Medal ( 2004 ) Where does the Carbon Dioxide really come from ? Plimer. OK here's the bombshell. The recent volcanic eruption in Iceland. Since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just 4 days, negated every single effort you have made in the past 5 years to control CO2 emissions on our planet......all of you. Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress -- it's that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans and all animal life. I know, it is very disheartening to realise that all of the carbon emissions savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kids "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only 2 squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speed boat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50p light bulbs with £5 light bulbs..........well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days. The volcanic ash emitted into the earth's atmosphere in just four days -- yes, FOUR DAYS -- by that volcano in Iceland has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud at any one time -- EVERY DAY. I don't really want to rain on your parade too much but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than the entire human race had omitted in all its years on earth. Yes folks, Mt Pinatubo was active for over one year --- think about it !!!! Of course I shouldn't spoil this "touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle which keeps happening despite our completely ineffective and insignificant efforts to affect climate change. And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next 2 to 3 years . And it happens every year. Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you on the bogus "human-caused -climate-change" scenario. Hey, isn't it interesting how they don't mention 'Global Warming' anymore but just 'Climate Change' ----- you know why ? It's because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past few years and these global warming bull artists got caught out ! And just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme --- that whopping new tax -- imposed on you that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won't stop any volcanoes from erupting, that's for sure.
