After around 18 months of ownership Chris Knapman has decided to sell his BMW i3 range extender in order to buy a (very) different car. In this CarGurus UK video, Chris explains the many pros of i3 ownership, as well as a couple of drawbacks he's discovered. He also talks about how the i3 performed on its Continental winter tyres, what running costs have been like, and why he was quoted £800 for a replacement door mirror.

Pros
Distinctive looks really stand out
Nimble handling for an EV
Appealing cabin design
Cons
Early versions have a short range
Stiff and unsettled ride
An expensive car to buy
The CarGurus verdict
The BMW i3 is an appealing, upmarket and beautifully finished electric car that’s engaging and easy to drive. It’s also an interesting piece of design and engineering, and it’s packed full of modern and useful technology, all of which bolsters its desirability further.
It has its flaws, however, ranging from those annoying rear doors to its occasionally stiff and unsettled ride. What’s most problematic, however, is the fact that the i3 often costs far more than comparable rivals with a much longer range. A new BMW i3 with a WLTP range of up to 188 miles, for example, costs almost £10,000 more than a more practical Renault Zoe with a 245-mile range.
These issues will probably prove moot to those who just love the BMW’s distinctive looks and design, however, and even though the car is not without fault, they’ll still be getting a bold and enjoyable premium electric car. Otherwise, if you just want a small electric car, there are plenty of other alternatives that could save you a hefty stack of cash.

I got an i3 in 2020. It has about 170-180 miles range in mild weather. A lot more than the older i3 and no range extender to drag around and service as its got enough range now. With increasing rapid chargers popping up a long distance journey isn't even a worry. I love it. I had a Golf R before and I don't really miss the 300hp because the i3 is so responsive and nippy. No lag to worry about. And the one pedal driving is a game changer.

The noise, lacking comfort, bad driving position and unsupportive seats as well as the poor grip and handling are a big negative though. Only two seats in the rear too, and small boot on top of that.

just sold my 16 VW GTI for a 2017 I3 Rex. Its not my primary vehicle, will be used mostly on weekends and so far its great. @@jimthomas370 My point, if that's what you were referencing when saying how quiet your i3 is, was that the i3 is nowhere near as comfortable or quiet as a BMW 1-series or VW Golf. Nowhere near. The difference isn't even small, it's big. This despite the tall and narrow tires too, and compromises in handling + dynamics.

Wait. £700 warranty, + £250 to claim is £950. The wing mirror change was quoted at "costing" £800? And of course, when you don't have a Warranty, you just buy a s/h mirror from a breakers (around £150) and get you local garage to thow it on (or in fact do it yourself, it's trivially easy, because the i3's unique construction in mainly plastic make sit somewhat like lego, with major things like door skins actually clipping on and off with hardly any threaded fasteners! My 2015 i3 (without the complex, somewhat troublesom ReX) has 100% reliable over 5 years of ownership, and total costs, including depreciation and insurance worked out a £50.41p per month over that period ! I've just replaced it with a 42 kWh i3s........ ;-)

No surprises there. I'm in a VERY similar situation. I have a late 2018 i3 range extender for fun which I love and bought for the same reasons as Chris. I went for the range extender even though the 140 ah model was out because of my distrust of the public charging network which is a bloody disgrace... I've also had a couple of warranty issues (injectors on range extender and a small electrical fault) and I too baulked at the nearly £1000 BMW extended warranty. Mind you, an extended warranty for my 3 year old Freelander 2 from Land Rover was £750... I also have a 2015 diesel Honda CR-V for towing my hot air balloon (1 tonne trailer). I've had the Honda for 5 years and it has been utterly reliable if a bit dull. Ideally I'd rationalise to an electric car that can tow, but that is mega money. Might look at Skoda Enyaq, but it's a bit of a lump and not fast and might be even more boring than the Honda...

Yes after moving from England in 1982, I have that car disease ….104 cars in 40 years ….had two i3 ..one REX and the other the BEV…absolutely loved the i3, but at the time the charging network in the U.S. wasn’t that great. Since then I have switched out to two Tesla Model 3’s…and the play car a 991.1 Porsche 911. Great video on the i3….hopefully the charging network here in the U.S. will get better for the BMW’s. It would make a great car for my kids…understanding electric cars are for the most part maintenance free, and the registration is only $25 per year in Scottsdale, AZ, as apposed to some other cars being $500 to $700 for a basic car.

The i3 was a brilliant concept that resulted in a clumsy production model. What an enigma it is. I admire and dislike it in equal parts. The price was simply outrageous and never quite justified when compared to other EVs on the market. It also belied the BMW ethos of being a driver's car affixed with the thinnest tires in production (or since the Model T). Still, as a 30k (slightly used) vehicle, it makes a viable case for itself in the used market and a worthwhile alternative to the 40+k Model 3. I know why you like it and why you don't.

Our i3 mirror got taken out in an accident. I found one on eBay, haggled the seller down to £150 and then paid a garage to fit it for me (although I think he regretted agreeing a price beforehand as it took him a lot longer to fit it). My ethos is to put money aside each month in case of problems rather than paying into an extended warranty, which, let's face it, is just an insurance policy.

So how is your "money aside" going to handle paying for your battery cooling system failing for example?
@gazzaman28
@gazzaman28 2 года назад
@@pistonburner6448 It's a good question. I think it's difficult to get a warranty that could cover all eventualities anyway, the older a car is the more likely it is to be wear and tear rather than a failure, and that's where you'd find an expensive warranty not really worth much at all in reality.
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 2 года назад
@@gazzaman28 It's not hard to get a warranty to cover all eventualities. I just had to go to the dealer and buy the car and then since I wanted more than the 2 year used car warranty I added 3 more years to it for a small fee. I don't understand how it could be easier.
@gazzaman28
@gazzaman28 2 года назад
@@pistonburner6448 How much is it per year? And what's the excess?
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 2 года назад
@@gazzaman28 It depends on the car model and brand, but in Germany for an i3 it was about 700€ for 3 years. It could have changed slightly, or it could be that I was given a discounted price, but approximately that. And I haggled that into the purchase price. No excess, it's straight up just like the new-car warranty. Only after the car has 100,000km on the odometer does the excess on parts (never any excess on labour) go up in steps of IIRC 10% per 20,000km. I believe for new cars you don't even have to buy it at purchase, you only have to pay the extension before the new car warranty runs out. My i3's battery cooling system failed, and I shudder to think of the massive costs without a warranty! Even if it's their fault that they're still inexperienced with EVs which caused the massive time needed for diagnosing I doubt they'll tell the customer that, they'll just bill you for every hour! In my BMW PHEV the charging system failed totally and it all had to be replaced! By the way another negative about EVs_ I had to wait many weeks for the specialist to be available. They have several types of certified EV specialists now, and non-specialists can't work on certain things in EVs at all. And guess if they're severely lacking in EV specialists??

You don’t need the i3 to take 4 bikes because you bought the YETi (Excellent Choice for a do everything car) so that leaves the real reason for selling the i3 as ? range / practicality / long term costs / strange driving experience compared to ice. @toninocars

The e cars has two greater problems than petrol cars, range and price. In normal car you can decide to keep your tank full and have 400 miles available at one go or fill up £20 quit and do so on weekly basis or as required, in bev you can not, you are limited by range , more sensitive to changing factors as cold, rain, wind, load., time. And you always have to carry the weight of your battery with you no matter the charge in (20% or 100%). The second reason is the price and serviceability: the ev cost much more than petrol car, the service although minimal can only be done in main dealer, once out of warranty or if something goes wrong that is not covered under warranty you are left with a huge bill that most average people can’t afford. , and this is what may stop many potential buyers, this is also what creates a very big problem with used cars business. After 5-10 years there will be a lots of ev used one that nobody wants because of the reason above and not so many ice cars that used price will rocket up. The winner make will be the one who offers at least 5 years unlimited mileage warranty for the whole car, 8+ years for the battery and drive train, and initial purchase price of a mid sized hatchback stays under £30000 , this is where the sweet spot is and many more people will switch to electric. , before that all these cars are only suitable on pcp or as company cars when new and then useless, and will create more and more pollution. 👍and battery recycling problems. Perhaps all that will settle in these 10 years ahead but meanwhile the most sensible buys for most people remains a Toyota hybrid.
@ardaz1987
@ardaz1987 3 года назад
You bring up some very valid points but let me tell you why I bought a used i3. For me the i3 will hopefully end up being the cheapest ever car to buy for the following reason based on owning one for nearly 2 years. I work 20 miles away from where I live and my old car would do the commute no problem but my fuel bills per month averaged out at £200 per month (Kia Sportage 2l diesel). Last year my total spend on fuel was £138 using my home charger and app that knows when my Octopus go tariff is just 5p per kWh. I don’t have range anxiety because my i3 has an on board generator (Rex) that gives me another 80 miles range if needed, it kicks in automatically and you don’t need to worry about it. Servicing is every 2 years and this can be done at a German car specialist rather a dealership to save paying extortionate dealership prices. The i3 is constructed from carbon fibre so there isn’t a metal chassis or bodywork to worry about going rusty. The battery can be replaced when it eventually loses its storage capacity, the cost of this at the moment is around £6000 and isn’t really wide spread in the uk but it is on the continent so I expect it to reach here before long. So in an ideal world you can keep an i3 indefinitely if you factor in changing the battery every 10 years or so. How this will work in reality is obviously not set in stone but it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. Bearing all this in mind potentially my i3 could (COULD) be the cheapest way to own a car in all aspects of ownership costs on a long term basis. I’m also lucky where I live in that the council have just installed a free charge point in their car park around the corner from me so all my fuel costs are currently free at the moment but this will change eventually. The car hasn’t missed a heart beat in the 2 years I’ve owned it. I occasionally drive an ICE vehicle as part of my work and I always think it’s medieval having to change gears and having crap acceleration. Getting back in the i3 puts a smile on my face after driving an ICE. The i3 is absolutely amazing at acceleration from 0 to 30 and I think I’m right in saying it out performs an M3 0 to 30. So speaking as someone who has owned numerous ICE vehicles and now owns an i3 I have no reservations in recommending it if it suits your life, work and home set up.

@CarGurusUK

Because the rex is used to hold the battery charge rather than drive the wheels, there’s no difference in terms of how the car behaves when it’s switched on. You can hear the range extender when it's running, but the noise isn't that loud and it rarely bothered me. As for range, with the 60Ah battery I was getting as low as 45-50 EV miles in the winter and as much as 85-90 miles in the summer. A full tank of petrol for the range extender will get you another 60-70 miles on top of those figures. This video talks in more detail about using the range extender: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2J90Tqcib4g.html Thanks, Chris

as a car to transition into electric vehicle ownership the i3 is a great choice as you will not have the range anxiety perceived by ICE drivers, indeed I bought one for that very reason! it put a smile on my face on every drive and surprises the vast majority of cars at the traffic light drag race! It is a great town or city car as it turns on a sixpence and is very easy to park and maneuver. No need to worry about the Rex, it kicks-in automatically at around 6% state of charge, or you can manually operate it if desired and is hardly noticeable when running. It was, and still is an innovative, iconic and unique car ( along with the i8), there will never be another car built this way as it is financially unviable. Truly innovative engineering by BMW, it put them way ahead of other manufacturers but they failed to capitalise on their research and development and as a consequence they are now way behind the competition. I reluctantly sold it recently after 2 years of trouble-free ownership, i was very sad to see it go, in fact I wish I had kept as a second car....even though I have no need for a second car!

The UK are so far behind on infrastructure & finally & most important for most potential buyers......the cost. I give the UK 10 years to get systems in place for those like me, possibly even longer.

Cost of annual warranty £700. Excess £250. Cost of new wing mirror £800. So warranty + excess = £950 = more than cost of repair. Ludicrous reliability - sorry unreliability. German cars are overengineered - but underdeveloped so complexity adds costs. I thought of an I3 - but overpriced expensive to run uncomfortable junk. A Renault Zoe would be better. Be prepared to lose a lot of money. In my market the i3 has the second greatest depreciation of any large scale production car (the first is a BMW 7 series). As a Prius (a much better, more reliable car which is far cheaper to run) is half the price of an i3 with range extender here, I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would buy one.
