BMW i3 - driving without brakes in London challenge

In this video, Mat Watson and Rebecca Chaplin hit the roads of London in a BMW i3 for a challenge with a difference.
The pair took it in turns to drive some of the city’s busiest areas without pressing the brake pedal and attempted to get by just using the electric car’s regenerative braking alone.
Like many electric cars, the BMW i3 begins to recover energy as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator. When it’s accelerating the battery powers the wheels but when it’s braking the motor acts as a generator, charging the battery and gently bringing the car to a stop at the same time - if you’re on flat ground that is.
Each of would drive just over three miles and the person who used the brake pedal the least would win. Of course, they weren’t allowed to cause an accident by not braking so planning ahead and paying attention would be key!

That is actually better than a number of movies I've seen. It has everything: conflict, speeding through urban traffic, cops, laughs, a ticking clock, and the always popular "are they or aren't they?"

MRsjovealek if you rev match, (and you´re good at it ;) ) you basically have no wear on the clutch doing that.

+Fixtor around here we call it double clutch, as you press on time the clutch to disengage, rev the engine and press the clutch again for the new gear to enter. Actually everyone learns to brake with the engine on driving classes. But for most people that don't know how to proper use a gearbox, that could be way too much of a trouble. xD

I do this challenge every time I drive my i3! Great fun, and very energy efficient. (The regenerative braking on the i3 is beautifully engineered; really smooth, progressive and easy to use.)

Do the brake lights turn on even though you're not pressing the pedal? If they don't and the car is breaking anyway it could be quite dangerous

I did a quick test drive in the i3 in gridlock downtown Toronto and you can one pedal drive the i3 given enough speed to enable strong regen. If you accelerate slightly and keep it at 1-2mph/kph it will creep forward which eventually requires actual brakes. Most the time the car will regen to a halt.

What an amazing car, i drive like that all the time with my polo first brake just lifting the pedal and braikng at 20-30 km/h in town. I cant imagine my self driving other way :)) that is how i learned from the beginig and i feel very ofd i i go with 50km and suddenly break i have a feeling i am gonna crash :)))))

+Monk MonkMonk Actually, I drive an Ampera, almost all the time in "max regen" mode. I was recently told that the brake lights don't in fact, come on when regen braking! Only when using the brake pedal! I think I'd better watch my rear view mirror much more.

It would be interesting to be able to use the "brakes" and have the electric motors actively take over the braking in place of the brakes. Seems like a logical use of the hybrid or electrical system, especially in city traffic...

I don't understand... does the i3 not use regenerative braking when you press the brake pedal, like Lexus (& presumably Toyata) does? The first bit of travel just uses regenerative braking, then you feel the pads engage if you press harder. You could drive any car without pressing the brake pedal - just use the gears - but it's a stupid way to drive!

This is daft because the electric motor IS the regenerative braking system. putting on light braking just increases the regenerative effect of the electric motor, which it does somewhat without the brakes to emulate engine braking.

There isn't any UK law specifically prohibiting someone from coasting downhill. However, if you were to be involved in an accident that was influenced by coasting, the argument could be made that the driver did not have control of the vehicle - which would be an offence.

+marco fava It's useful to Not use the brake in an EV or hybrid, because it extends the driving range on the battery. (Regenerative braking recycles energy & recharges the battery.) .

Next time shift to Neutral to stop the car from creeping. You could have dropped your brake number from 3 to just 1 .

if it is down hill and you shift to neutral it will creep however if you set it in reverse it won't creep forward but you may make people behinde you afraid.

Pedestrians only have right of way at a crossing, people can walk out infront of this car simply because they didn't hear it coming, which for their own safety of not being hit the horn I believe is justified.
