Great review again Nobby. I think if more chargers were available I would in time consider an EV, your living with it series has certainly intrigued me tho' due to very high initial cost I don't think I'd be there yet or in the future purely as well down to the high cost, the infrastructure or lack thereof and indeed the range due to the mileage I do. Your series tho' has provided some interesting food for thought. Well put together I must say.

Haven’t had a look around the Ioniq so I can’t advise there unfortunately. Leaf is the cheapest option by far, they’re nearly giving them away at this stage. 1st edition has most of what you’d need yeah, just try get a deal on it, they’ll tell you they don’t need to discount them but it’s worth asking / playing another dealer off them. @NobbyOnCars
@NobbyOnCars 2 года назад
If you need a bit more space / higher up driving position, a car for easier access for less mobile people perhaps, ID.4 is the one but essentially, ID.3 will do the same job and handles a little better. Relying on public charging will make it a little trickier to own in terms of having to plan charging a bit more but I’ve met taxi drivers who don’t have driveways and they can make it work.

I kind of wished vw offered a 22kwh ac charger upgrade option- with 3 phase common in parts of Europe and most public places able to receive it it’s nuts that your limited mainly to 7kwh at home on single phase or 11kwh half of what is capable on 3 phase would be great to go to the next stage

Much smaller than in ICE cars. Aeorodynamics is much more important. The weight only needs more energy when accelerating, and in an EV you get ~80% of that energy back through regen when decelerating. In a ICE you get exactly 0%.

The elephant in the room for me is the money, or more importantly lack of it. If that 22kw charger is charging you say 30 cents per kwh that is only 6.60 per hour for the hours that a car is connected to it. That is not enough to pay a man in a diesel van to service it, which is why they are always broken and covered in moss

But, you'll start seeing 5, then 10, then 50 in the supermarket car park, enticing you to do your shopping there, with the extra business (and a penny or two on some items?) paying the bill. 45 minutes "charge while you shop" each week will be more than enough for many.

@@rogerstarkey5390 For supermarkets to put them in, in any real numbers and pay for them themselves they are going to have to have some sort of claim back system like a hotel giving you a refund on a public car park otherwise what was just a supermarket carpark now becomes a free charging station and no spaces left for shoppers

Love these updates, but I'm not convinced electric is the future just like they told us buy diesel!! In 10 years they could be pushing hydrogen powered cars instead (maybe). I watched/read researched about electric, the main problem from the info I've read is the raw materials to produce the batteries, I can't remember if it was there's only enough raw materials for the next 25years if everyone switched to electric in the UK or Europe! Nevermind the ROW. Obviously it takes so much more than your mobile phone and its easier for car manufacturers to jump on the electric bandwagon. Good example Toyota developed the hybrid long before anyone else, i don't see them pushing electric! In the US Toyota is pushing hydrogen cars only in California for now as there's not many hydrogen fuel stations outside California. Its a lot more convenient as its like filling up your car with diesel/petrol. Or as I've joked Electric now in 10 years hydrogen and 10 years after that Ketchup powered who knows 🤣🤣🤣🤣 plus the whole moral dilemma of where there getting the materials, I've seen the mines in Africa using child labour etc
@NobbyOnCars
@NobbyOnCars 3 года назад
I think perhaps the car companies know something more than the rest of us as I don't see why they would invest so much in electric for it to end again in the short term. Who knows though!

But all this talk about home chargers. It is not possible for everyone to have a home charger. So are you really saying dont buy an ev unless you have ha home charger. Also Ionity is expensive and it seems you have to charge very often. And it is not good for the battery if you fast charge all the time and that is why you need a home charger. And there are so few chargers arround that you have to sit and wait to charge your car until the other car is done, and that may take at least 30 minutes or more if they are goding on a road trip. And then you have to charge your car for at least 30 minutes. And in shopping malls they have slow charging that trickle electricity in small amounts caus they want you to stay in the mall buying chainsaws or whatever. Now this car is awesome but wtf happened to that go green infrastructure with almost free electricity and green sources? How do you know what you are puttning in your ev? Would you be able to drive to another charger if you found out that it was not so clean? I am worried, really worried:)

All good points that you raise. For those who don't have a driveway for a charger, those in apartments etc more need to be done.

Hi Mark. Had a quick glance out of courtesy lol.... Long live the ice. Too many robotics in life already. We even speak slower like one into siri/ google etc 😂 Can't wait to hear reports of oiks unplugging the chargers lol. Hydrogen sounds more interesting. Also the eyesores of chargers everywhere not to mention the likely "charge rage" b4 sufficient charging facilities. I could continue......

As for oiks unplugging chargers - the cables remain locked to the car until you the driver end the charge.

So 25% less range for climate and only charge to 80%. So you loose 45% range by just ineffectiveness. How is that loss comparable to the loss of a combustion engine. Add added weight of an ev and problems with loss of electrical power when cold. Some have stated that in cold winter weather the energyloss can be 25 to 50%. So you need a heatpump driven by the EV battey!. I like EVs but come on, arent the customer being fooled by wltp standards and the ev propaganda train?

Don’t forget the precious metals in the batteries have to be mined , sometimes by 7 year olds in hellhole African countries , batteries are manufactured in factories , electricity has to be made , nuclear power stations , how can a car that takes 2 plus tonnes of the earth possibly be green ? Taking everything into account , is something like a properly maintained 1ltr Seat Ibiza just as “clean” over the lifetime of the car ? Are we being brainwashed ? petrol bad electricity good . I do like to put other points of view, and not toe the line .

If your talking about cobalt, then the majority of those mines are supplying the oil industry as it’s used in oil refineries far more then in electric car batteries. Does that stop you buying petrol or diesel?

Taking everything into account EVs, while by no means perfect, use less resources over their lifetime. Don't forget, the batteries are reusable in things like home battery systems and finally recyclable. The eventual loss of minerals is quite a small percentage of what goes into the original manufacturer. Electric is increasingly coming from renewable or low carbon sources in the UK, and green tariffs are easy to come by and no more expensive. How much of the oil, diesel or petrol used in an ICE is reusable? Interesting article: www.theguardian.com/business/2021/mar/01/fossil-fuel-cars-make-hundreds-of-times-more-waste-than-electric-cars?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other Also, check out Fully Charged here on YT for lots of independent interesting news on the subject.

Cobalt mining, the one with the child labour problem, is used for many things. 42% of cobalt goes to rechargeable batteries, but almost 3/4 of that is for portable consumer electronics such as phones and laptops, about a quarter for EV batteries, or 10% overall. 16% of cobalt goes to superalloys used for structural parts in jet engines and natural gas power plants. More cobalt is used for your phone and your computer and your flying and your cooking and heating. Are you ready to give those up? Tesla has switched to a new lower cobalt battery and there are new no-cobalt batteries being taken up by others.
