The up! is Volkswagen's brand-new city car and the smallest model in the range. It's designed to take on rivals like the Fiat 500 and Toyota Aygo and offers excellent value for money while maintaining VW's high levels of quality. Its clean-cut design and efficient, fun to drive three-cylinder petrol engine should prove a hit with a crop of young customers. A starting price of £7,995 means this is a VW that's affordable, too. As a result, the up! takes the crown as CarBuyer's Best City Car for 2012.

With all due respect I prefer glossy metal to cheap plastic. Dunno about elbow comfort but exposed door metal looks better and gives a slight retro feel to this car. I wouldn't classify that as a downside.

I don't think that covering the metal parts on doors with just plastic helps anything. I prefer the exposed metal actually. The suspension really feels nice! A great little car indeed.

This is one of the best cars VW has made, very cheap to run and buy, its well equipped and practical. It even looks nice :D

Girlfriend just brought this car. She is well pleased. I drive a Golf and I was impressed with the build quality. I was especially impressed about the fuel sipping ability. I literally thought something was wrong with the fuel gauge. We put £40 in drove 160 miles and it didn't even take out £10 worth of fuel. Gob smacked. It does really well with fuel. Must be about 65mpg. My old golf is 30mpg.

I like the gloss panel in the interior.Also I like coloured panel in doors.All these make vw up more beautiful.I like the lights of vw up. I prefer up because suspension is comfort,good handling,smooth ride..Vw up is the best in city cars

2021..Wife's had a five door for six years..it's a little beast. I'm 6ft tall, and in the driver's seat there's a ton of room. Sitting there you feel like you're in a larger car.

I fail to see how this car wins car of the year awards. It's plain looking, technology wise it's mundane and extremely sparse on standard equipment. All I can say is it must have been a bad year...or it pays to be nice to Volkswagen maybe.

Recently I read that they had scrapped distributing the UP! here in Australia and bemoaning the fact they didn't have enough sales here. I think one of the main reasons was, that it was only offered in manual transmission, and, although manuals are popular in Europe, Automatics are the most popular here and manuals are fairly rarely sold by dealers and it is harder to sell manual cars too. So please bring back the UP! but in auto and I think you will see sales.

I don't know what sort of car crash your getting into where things fly toward the back of the car, unless maybe you were reversing into a wall at 50 kmh and that's beside the point the nav screen clips into a secure spot it wont come out unless you hold down the button to remove it

3Slim3Shady3 I don't believe the screen mounting thing will hold it securely in a 50 kph crash... and I think many crashed involve some kind of side or frontal acceleration, or in the worst case a rollover, which all make the thing fly around the cabin hitting occupants...

I can't deny it. I actually liked this little car. I thought the tin panels on the inside were nice. Normally, Mat makes valid complaints. But this time, it really looked like he was looking for something negative to say. A tiny car with spunk.

We had a test drive in one of these about 8 weeks ago my wife thought it was a great car I drove it and found it very smooth over bumps,of which there are plenty in GB.1 week later she ordered 1, 5 doors auto,with leather seats VW do great deals.we pick up this weekend and I will report back soon.

Yes I have driven both. Of course the 208 is going to be quieter, roomier and slightly more comfortable but the UP! is obviously better in the long run.

Once in a while you get both a cheap and good car.. it's like when Companies for some reason let their engineers do a good job. it had its quirks but nothing major and when you add the price tag and the overall performance, this was far more satisfying in the long term than many of the other cars on the road.

This car has little style going for it in comparison to a fiat 500 or a Mini for example . It looks very boxy and the one I looked at was poorly equipped and felt extremely tinny . Don't understand the motoring press's fascination with it . I hate it .

I'm going to go against the grain and make people tell me I'm wrong here.. I'm sure of it. that being said I think this car is one ugly piece of work. its a box. as a lad who is close to taking his driving test and buying his first car, I ruled this out almost immediately. its too 'cute'. personally I think the best looking car that younger people can buy is the Aygo, after all, its not just about practicality, I need to be proud of my car and I would feel ashamed in that box on wheels

godfatherNYC I have had the Up! for two years and it's great on the highway and going up hills is no problem but if you are doing 55 to 60 km's then get a hill it struggles a little but otherwise it a great little car. Only problem in Australia servicing is expensive so i just do it myself.

It is what golf should have bean. Car makers and especially VW group make each new car bigger than it's predecessor and later they find out, that they lack a smaller car and put a new one in the range. Now polo is the same size as golf used to be and this one is about the same size as golf Mk I. In 20 years golf will be something like a SUV.

£300 for a cheap little plastic screen yet my vauxhall Adam has an integrated touch screen dash with movies and apps and sat nav for £250???? Rip off I think! Rest of car is good though

The interior are crap: no memories on the seats and you lost the set up every time somebody goes in the back, one only window comand for the right window and is on the right door, so it's very dangerous for the driver to reach it, no moving central air holes, and a lot of nude metal all over the interiors.

Yes but Fiat and Peugeot are both heaps of junk that are going to break down and i wouldnt touch with a 10ft shitty pole. And loose there value stupidly fast. My 10 year old base model Lupo which is the equivalent of the up! just passes its MOT with flying colours and has never needed a repair in the 2 years ive had it. i doubt Fiat or Peugeot could do that

I can't believe what I'm going to say, but this car's looks haven't aged very well... It might be fixed by some nicer rims, but still, this car doesn't seem as pretty and amazing as when I first saw it in 2012...

This is a brilliantly packaged car but the engine isn't good enough. I tried the 75bhp version. There is not much pull until above 3000rpm and then it feels as if it's going to shake itself apart; VW elected not to fit balance shafts or even an unbalanced flywheel (which is what Ford did for the Fiesta Ecoboost). If you can live with the engine, the Skoda Citigo looks best out of the three "sister" cars IMO.

Might actually want to get a VW again if they release this in the USA. Nothing they have released here since 92 has impressed me. I want a fun, small, basic car, and to drive like a real VW. Diesel that gets 80+MPG? PLEASE. and a GTI model.

Had this as a courtesy car recently and my goodness its awful! clutch pedal is more like a switch (on or off) engine has no power, esp on the motorway and everything inside looks and feels cheap. Gearbox is very loose for a VW!

look by all means, i drive a 94 jeep xj but i love the vw brand. i started out with a 53 beetle and its a guzler and no its slow and hevy on fuel. im from SA so its bad. i love Lolla to bits but this will be my next buy. wont get rid of lolla though.

definivley NOT i´ve driven BOTH and also the Nissan Pixo and the Fiat Panda... first: the UP: yes it got a stylish inroomdesighn, but it gives you a headahe within 20 minutes, the Panda: quite a lot of space für a supermini but it rattles on nearly every place in the car... the Pixo: slow, hard to handle because of its extremly small back window... The 107: drove it 500km over the motorway at a constant speed of about 130 kilometres an hour, also the boot is not smaller then the UP`s

i was talking about the reviews praise..almost in every video a VW is mentioned..lets face it alright? there are way better cars out there i just believe that its really ugly..it kinda reminds me old type cars by design and interior they only VW i would go for its a Polo or a Golf, nothing else there are cars with good safety but sure this is not the one i am getting..thats my opinion buddy

Uhm no, in the Us you guys don't have the fiat panda, in Europe has always sold much more than any VW city car, and there's plenty of reasons for it. On the other side VW has a great reputation (I own an audi A6 and a VW polo btw) but with up! that's all they are selling, nothing more. Just look at the metal exposed, if it was in a kia everybody would have tought was a cheap car, and that's what it is, like I said I own VW cars but I don't like to get fooled like this ;).

The up! on the other hand is reserved, well designed and very contemporary classic in its design - cheaper? the up! is not going to break anyone's bank dude the up! drives better than anything in its class and probably better than KIAs 2 classes above it

The VW up is not a rival to the Peugeot 208 because the Up is aiming at the city car category like the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and the Peugeot 107. The Peugeot 208 is in the small car market with cars like the Volkswagen Polo, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3. also if you have been reviews of the Peugeot 208 they say that its just as good if not better than the Fiesta just the driving position isn't great and you can't have experienced the Peugeot 208 yet to say the VW up is better than it.

Yes, I tested it recently for a short drive and I think it's hateful. Boring, underpowered, overpriced and above all, incredibly ugly. My fridge has more personality than this car. If you want a VW, spend a couple more pennies and get a Polo. If you don't, get a Fiat 500 with character as standard or go for a Picanto (or similar) and save a lot of money.

In a small car you look at; how it looks drive economy practicality If we compare up! with others we will see that it's actually not successful. A Fiat Panda or even a Peugeot 107 can be better. They have 4 doors and espacialy Fiat Panda is much more practical and economical than up! and still it is a super mini. Please review cars by how they are not by their badges.

Why do you think you hear more about VW Golf TDI's and Polo TDI's breaking down than any other cars? Because they are the most popular in the world. You're not going to be hearing about so many cars breaking down from an unpopular car manufacturer are you? The TDI is in fact a very reliable engine and nobody can deny that.

Fiat Panda is not a super mini. Sizes: Fiat Panda: Length 3,650 mm (143.7 in) Width 1,640 mm (64.6 in) Height 1,550 mm (61.0 in) VW Up!: Length 3,540 mm (139.4 in) Width 1,641 mm (64.6 in) Height 1,489 mm (58.6 in) Only 1mm wider than the panda :D

Shit in the Rabbit era????? What about the MK3 era? I have a Jetta/Bora mk3 and i replaced the rear windows with crank ones and i also had to disconnect and bypass the factory alarm... VW does struggle with electronic stuff unfortunately... :(((

thats rubbish the panda is no more economical than the up! especially when you take into account VW's claimed MPG of cars are much more reliable than the claimed MPG of fiats, you cant get close to what fiat claim you can get on most of their engines.

For sure VW makes some reliable engines and cars but their inflated reputation is a good example of brain washing marketing. Too many people are willing to buy them with their eyes closed without any rational criteria or sources of information.

Hmm i drove Up the other day, and it's very good to drive, but it's so noisy in the cabin. And one other thing I don't like is... the interior is boring. For example fiat 500 is much better looking inside and also more fun to driv

Fiat Panda is a symbolic car and the old generation is still famous around europe. If we were talking about another fiat like punto or qubo you were right but panda is different. Panda is the only proper car that fiat ever made.

i think everyone has just been caught up in the premium badge, take the badge away and this car hasn't really got anything on it's rivals, they're all too caught up in the fact you can get a vw for less than 10,000

Who exactly is the 'target market' of the VW Up? I ask this because my grandparents have just taken delivery of one. I always assumed it was targeted at more younger people.
