Bought the 74hp version. It's brilliant fun and is more than capable of getting up to motorway speeds and overtaking people. Even though it's not designed for motorway journeys I got 57mpg. I think James was enjoying the turbo a bit too much hence the poor fuel economy

I think that version is mainly created for traveling salesman or merchandisers, who maybe don't even have rear seats, but a cargo area.

Great review. I have pre facelift one and it's great car. it's joy to drive and consumption is great, driving on the motorway over speed limit and it's hard to get it over 6l/100km

I own a 2012 Golf mk6 1.4 16v and the factory says 6.4lit/100km average consumption and my calculations based on the amount of petrol I put on gas stations says 6.1 lit/100km. So VW does not lie but people don't know how to drive

BrateTebra123 My mate just bought a Golf GTI n the dash lights up like a Christmas tree full of errors & now his door stop mechanism sounds like bones snapping. I hate Prius cars BTW, just pointing out that Volkswagen LIED to consumers & now has to pay PHENOMENAL settlements for said LIES. Sorry you support this & sorry you're so bloody butthurt :) BTW I'm a mechanic & know all about Volkswagen "quality" lol

So much fun to drive, Looks good, sounds good and a great manual gear box, economy fantastic at around 60 miles per gallon. And very environmentally friendly. Also very competitive to Insure.

I got my Ibiza SOL with free satnav and reversing sensors for less than one of these when I traded in my 2yr old Citigo. So disappointed that they removed the touchscreen nav and trip computer from new models!

As for the Up GTI, I own one... absolutely love it! 😍😍 fun, quick, sounds amazing & in terms of fuel economy well after a few thousand miles on the clock got 61mpg out of her on a long run, didn't want to go any higher but that's still fantastic.

I still remember the days when Suzuki and Daihatsu sold cars with 3 cylinder engines and reviewers made fun of them. Nowadays they speak like it's the best thing ever. If 3 cylinders are better than 4, why not put in a 1 cylinder for the ultimate bone rattling experience?

32mpg ?? Can't be correct. My wife's i10 1.2 does 48-50 mpg around town and 66 mpg on a run and feels peppy.

Just a few points then32mpg.....ASG single clutch automated transmission (why not use CVT?)Interior - is it a big step up, or any step up from the pre-face lift? Somehow looks a bit cheaper, and no sliding seat? Come on VW get it together. And I don't like that smart phone cradle....I don't have a smart phone to fit in that. Can you remove the cradle? And does the stereo of a regular AUX input?

32 mpg? I am doing 28 mpg in my Skoda Octavia 2.0 liter petrol engine, and that is 90% city driving. My Skoda is from 2002. Plus It's longer by 1 meter. This isn't a big improvement...

I think this car is having an identity crisis. Is it basic, bare-bones transportation with VW badge - or is it supposed to be a cute, fun, and customizable niche car like the Mini? The more options you tack on to a car line, the more expensive it becomes - even for those who don't take any options. To have all those different colours and interiors, manufacturing has to be planned completely differentlt. More tools have to be acquired, workers need more training. The manufacturing line needs additional flexibility. The cost is passed on to the consumer, resulting in a econobox costing as much as a near-luxury vehicle.

If this was any other car brand with the phone holder for sat nav and music it would be demoted to bottom of the class. Poor VW reliability never seems to be mentioned in these reviews as per the JD Power results from actual owners. If it was me I'd buy Japanese!

Of course it does much more than 32mpg, its wrong. I do have an up tsi here in Brazil. Its much more powerful (105hp) and is one of The most economic cars available here. Um doing smtg around 16 kilometers per liter in the city using petrol.

In brazil the Up! tsi is flexfuel and in ethanol it makes around 105 bhp or so... guys have been dynoing it and it goes more than that, like 120 ... funny

When I'm getting a car, around 3 years to that, I will convert it to ethanol. Yes the fuel consumption gets up by about 20-30% but you will get a very clean engine and the air remains close to undamaged. And the POWER, just fun!

@@THe9-3MAnIaC I live in São Paulo and ethanol is actually cost effective too, so all of my cars have been running e100 exactly because of that. The car gets a little punchier, reduces carbon build up in the chamber and reduces emissions. However, if you want to reduce carbon build up I suggest you installing a catch can too. I did and the amount of oil it prevents from going to the intake manifold, valves and from burning up in the chamber is unbelievable. Now my plugs are always 100% clean, ignition timing is a charm and my engine runs as clean as a lab. The only downside of e100 is the cold cycle. It takes twice as long to heat up and decrease the revs bellow 1000rpm. Ethanol cools the air charge like crazy. In winter, sometimes I put some premium gas, like 15% and it reduces the cold cycle time but its not entirely necessary. I have quite some experience running ethanol, I've been doing it for more than a decade. If you have any questions feel free to ask ; )

I live in Sweden and the E85 is about 20-25% cheaper per liter than regular 95 octane unleaded E5, I have put about a liter of E85 in my moped a Rieju MRX Racing from 2008. It's a 2 stroke with separate oil mix, and it runs a bit better and it feels like it has a noticeable more power. But my main jet is way to small to run on pure E85, I have a 90 main jet and I think I have to uppgrade to a 120 main jet to run on E85. And talking about E85, I think that I gonna convert a lawnmower to E85 and see how that goes. It's a briggs and stratton 375 sprint and I have blocked some of the air holes in the air filter holder to get a higher fuel to air ratio. But it's winter here now and it's around 10-°C here so it's hard to start. I have experimented with that engine to run on pure concentrated washer fluid, that is most of the ingredients ethanol. It ran fine but a bit lean, but I was feeling so much better to breath clean air and smell that washer fluid smell it was quite fun actually!

@@Lucas-ck1po I'm really jealous of you that you have access to E10, E15, E20 and so on! Here the government is talking about E10 gasoline, but it taking so long! It's going on that ethanol is eating fuel lines, fuel pump, gaskets and so on... Just use a fuel additive, I'm using Tripak bensin (petrol) booster to lubricate, increase the octane number, and clean the engine and fuel system and of course carburetor. Sadly it's not available I think for you, but if you are able to get it, just buy it! It's works really well, the engine is running smoother and gets better fuel efficiency

My base Up with the weaker 3-cylinder lacks grunt, especially in summer with AC on and a passenger or two. Turbo 1.0 would remedy that.

S Brack Agree with you and for that price and laughable MPG you could have something like a used Ford Focus diesel which would be better to drive, have loads more room and you would get over 50 MPG with hardly anymore money in road tax or insurance.

Probably not enough demand in the US for cars this small. And for tax reasons they would have to set up local production. Bringing the units in from the factory in Eastern Europa would make the price unattractive to american customers.

Weak mpg. Likely to improve as the engine is run in. These small 3 cylinder 1 litre turbos (vw/ford) seem to get quite poor mpg in real world. Given I get 46mpg out of a leon estate (and the absolute worst of 36 in heavy traffic) unless the journey was really short I'd expect at least 50mpg from a light city car like this.

i had a 107 and that was agonisingly slow. 13 seconds to hit 60 on a dry day.

My ford focus is a measly 10 or 11 seconds but I own a motorcycle that can reach 60 in under 4 seconds.

That is because this jerk does not know how to drive. I own a 2012 Golf mk6 1.4 16v and the factory says 6.4lit/100km average consumption and my calculations based on the amount of petrol I put on gas stations says 6.1 lit/100km. So VW does not lie but people don't know how to drive

its shocking buy a twingo Dynamique S with 5drs and a 0.9Tce its about the same as this 3dr up has a bigger boot and just a quick and fun and will do an average 48mpg which good as i have the 1.0Sce and that does the same mpg as the Tce.

since the emission scandal vw cant build an engine that matches rivals like Fords 1.0 ecoboost and Renaults Tce engine even Fiats TwinAir and most aint Early 1.4Tsi drank as much oil as fuel 1.9Tdi Turbos went Premature and the up is not that well built saw just today a 2015 Up with a Broken Headlight and ASG Gearboxes going wrong at around a Year old.

had a up! in the family for 3 years, the transmission on the manual is the most noisy rattling pile of junk I've ever experienced, certainly a car built down to a price.

David C Agree with you, would rather have a two year old bigger diesel car which is not a tiny tin cheap euro box and would hardly cost more to own and run and you would get way more MPG.
