Hi. Great info. We are traveling from US TO Tahiti and I keep going in circles about what to get. We’ve got an iPhone, insta360x3, go pro 12, charging bank for insta batteries, curling iron says 120/240v, ac 50/60 hz 125w. Not sure if I should get the small light weight square universal adaptor or a Ceptics travel voltage converter 200W? If I go with the converter then I’m sure I’m safe right? Even if the items are compatible either way? Only thing it won’t do is a hairdryer. Your help is appreciated. Thanks

Thanks! Honestly, I would avoid buying a converter -- they are expensive and usually clunky for travel. I would first check with your hotel or resort to see if they have any converters there that you can use. Also, some hotels will have converted outlets in the bathroom to accomodate US travelers, so it's worth checking before spending money. Hope that's helpful! 👍

This was a very informative video, however, every video I've seen is talking about converting US appliances for other countries.... But what about using an appliance from another country in the US? For example, how about using a 210-240v hairdryer that has a Chinese/Australian plug in the US? Is there a conversion for that?

As long as the voltage matches the range of your local electricity, you should be ok using a simple plug adapter.

Thank you so much papi. I am getting annoyed because my I.T professor and his teaching material uses the word converter and adapter synonymously yet wonders why I get confused. I knew something wasn't adding up. He says power adapter instead of power converter. An Adapter is totally different from a power converter which converts AC/DC power. Ughhhh. The only reason this aggravates me is because it forces me to have to pay close attention to everything he says and be mindful enough to catch any discrepancies that I'll have to unteach myself and relearn later. I wish you were my I.T professor. I would be such a good student.

Sorry to hear about your situation. That's a tough one. In general, I think it's harder to convert from lower to higher voltage, especially when it's a more unique voltage (i.e., 250v). I would contact the seller or merchant to see if they have any solution.

Hi Melody! Southeast Asia is tricky. When I was in Cambodia, I think I saw three different style plugs (UK, North America, and EU) in various hotels. To be safe, I would probably get a universal adapter (you won't need a converter for your phone). Also, this site seems to have some good info on the plug situation in Myanmar: www.ananda-travel.com/UK/electric_plug_myanmar_uk.htm The good thing is that getting adapters when traveling in Asia is usually pretty easy. They sell them in most general stores, but I would get a universal one before your trip just to be safe. 😎

@TripAstute
@TripAstute 3 года назад
It really depends on the device. For sewing machines, it's likely that you'll need a converter. Though I would check the power supply or underneath the unit for a label with the power specifications to be sure. If it shows a range that includes India's power rating, then you should be good with only an adapter. 👍

My coffee machine says 120 volts should I plug into the coffee machine plug adapter or the converter? Please reply
@TripAstute
@TripAstute Год назад
It depends on whether it's rated to accept a wider range of voltage. Most coffee machines do not (in my experience). In that case, you would need a converter. However, unless it's an expensive coffee machine, you might opt just to get a new one in the different voltage since converters are so expensive.

Hi I stay in the UK. I had a US plug(2 pin) and used an adapter(US to UK) for 8 months for my straighteners and it was fine. However the adapter broke ( I dropped it ) and ended using a converter ( US ) and for some reason my straightener overheated and just stopped working. It no longer switches on despite using a new adapter. I don’t know if it’s fried but it doesn’t make sense if it is.. I get it if it fried from using the adapter but not a converter. Please help me 😭
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 4 года назад
Hmm. I'm honestly not sure. In theory, your converter should have reduced the voltage to allow you to use the local power. However, it sounds like your straightener was working with just an adapter, which means that it might have been able to accept either voltage. Have you tried another adapter to see if it works?
@okaro6595
@okaro6595 4 года назад
Converters are tricky, they do not work on all equipment. Never use a converter if your device works on the mains voltage at the destination. Carefully read and understand the manual of the converter. I say using a converter is always the last resort.

@TripAstute

If the TV can handle a wide range of electricity, then you really only need an adapter (instead of a converter). In general, converting down is easier than up, but for most electronic devices, it is unnecessary since it's rated to handle a wide range of voltages.

All phone chargers nowdays accept from anywhere of 100-240V 50/60Hz and pretty much a every AC/DC converter BUT you need to be careful if you have a very old one (these are quite heavy) because they use a transformer to step down the voltage and rectify it and these transformers can only accept 1 voltage. If you do such mistake you may blow it up but since Greece uses 230V and US uses 115V then you would most likely get a very low output voltage so you dont run the risk of blowing things but remember if you get any electrical device from US check the voltage rating

Thanks! To be honest, that's a tricky situation. You'll want to check and see if those devices support a range of power inputs. Most likely, they won't though. The problem is that you would need a converter that steps up the voltage (rather than step down), which can be expensive. In that case, I would probably avoid getting the converter and repurchasing the two appliances in the US. In case you do want to get a converter that can step up the voltage though, here is an example: amzn.to/39UYzMw

No problem! The electricity in the US would need to be upconverted from 110 to 220V (and the opposite in Europe). It's generally less complex to convert down than up, which is why the converters are so expensive. It's also why a lot of American travelers that take their hair dryers to Europe with only an adapter end up burning out the device since it can't handle the extra voltage. 😆

@Trip Astute - 1. the device can NOT handle dual voltage ! 2. this 9 USD very over priced ( 1 USD) Adapter you linked is DANGEROUS & illegal & on amazon even marked NOT to use with high power stuff !! a real adapter looks like this: a good quality USA power strip correctly wired to a good quality 13 A fused UK plug. A suitable transformer for this weights ~10 KG ( & preferably with UK system plug / socket)

Good Day!! I know this video has been out for a few years but, I need to know if my curling iron will work in India. I know they have 220 volt but still don't know if the same curling iron that I used in China will work in India. When plugging my hair curler in while in China, it did not get hot enough to work. It at least took the frizz out of my hair but no curl. Any advice??
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 5 лет назад
Hi Jo. Did you buy the curling iron in China? It sounds like it wasn't getting enough power to heat up. Most times, I hear about the opposite problem -- the curler or blow dryer burns out because it gets too much power! For appliances or devices that heat up, I usually recommend buying one at your destination. There are ones that will work in multiple voltage situations, but I feel like they're usually only rated for US and European use. While you could also get a voltage converter before your trip, I think it's usually cheaper (and less of a hassle) to get the device with the local voltage rating. Since converters tend to be expensive too, I think it might be the most cost-effective solution. Hope that's helpful! 😊

@Jo Gullekson - China has 230 V-AC @ 50 Hz ( Not 60 ! ) via a dodgy "universal socket" that is usually populated by Chinese Australian grounded plug & Eu- + USA- plugs

So what's the difference between a converter, and a transformer?
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 4 года назад
I’m not a scientist, but I believe it has to do with the way it treats the sine wave. I believe a converter alters the wave, while a transformer maintains it. Transformers used to be a lot more common, but I haven’t seen them used as much for travel.

I am traveling to pakistan in a month. I need something for my surface pro 6 and my phone. Can u guide on what can I take?
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 4 года назад
I believe that Pakistan uses both type C and D plugs. I would get a both adapters to be safe. You won't need an converter since both your Surface Pro and phone should be able to handle the different voltage.

@@TripAstute oh so just get the plugs and dont need to convert the electricity even though the voltage there is 220 and 50 Hertz?
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 4 года назад
I would check the fine print on your chargers. Most electronics purchased in the US are capable of 100-240V and 50-60 Hz. As long as it says so, you don't need to convert the electricity and can just use an adapter.

Thanks so much for the great information and clear explanation! My hair dryer/styling brush is 185v 60 hz. I will be traveling from USA to UK, I already have a plug adapter, will I also need a voltage converter? Thanks in advance.
@TripAstute
@TripAstute Год назад
Thanks for the kind words. You will want to be especially careful when going from the US to UK. They use a much stronger voltage which can often results in burnouts (unless the power adapter/system can accommodate it). To be honest, I would get a cheap hair dryer there if you can rather than buying an expensive converter. It will likely be more reliable and less costly. Alternatively, I have seen some new hair dryers that advertise that they can operate with various global electrical systems. 😊

Not sure why it isn't working. I'm assuming you're using an adapter? The laptop should be able to handle the different voltage. If you don't mind me asking, in which country did you purchase the Macbook Pro?

I’m going to Japan in a month and have a iPhone 8plus. What do I need? A adapter or a converter to charge my phone? Thanks for the help and have a great day!
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 5 лет назад
Japan uses the same type of plug as the US (i.e., type A & B). The voltage is slightly different though, but your iPhone (and other electronics) shouldn't have any problems adapting to it. Assuming that you're from the US, you won't need any adapters or converters to charge your phone. Hope that's helpful!

Hmm. The only time I've needed a converter was for basic appliances (e.g., hair dryers). Though for electronics, they should be able to handle the voltage range. Since it's been a while since I've been to Japan, I did a quick Google search just to make sure things haven't changed. Looks like others share the same experience: tinyurl.com/yy6rhdwp

Hi I have an electric pressing comb from the USA but even with the UK adapter plug it doesn't heat up. What do I need to use in order for it to work or do I need to cut off the head and fit a UK plug instead? Thanks in advance.
@TripAstute
@TripAstute 5 лет назад
You might need a converter. I’ve usually heard of the opposite experience where the US hair dryer burns because of the UK high voltage. It sounds like it might have some kind of failsafe to protect it.

@@TripAstuteThank u for getting back to me, i appreciate it. Just one more thing (in my columbo voice lol) can u advise me on one as i dont have a clue, preferably one where i can just plug the hot comb in and not have to fiddle with switches to adjust power in the UK where i live. The hot comb that i purchased from America has two flat prongs, one straight and the other with a slight bulbous shape. I don't know if this info will help but on the hot comb it has 2/250~ Thanks again, ur a star and im a new subby😆

Thanks! Sorry for the late reply too -- we are currently traveling. I would recommend something like this: tinyurl.com/y3oxx38v Though to be honest, if you're just looking to use it for a hot comb, it might be better just to get a new hot comb in the UK. It might be cheaper than getting the converter. 😉

@Crazysexycool Lewis - maybe you already roasted it with 230V or the converter transformer is to small = roasted.
