The season is almost over so I get ready to remove the mast from my boat. The sails and the sprayhood must be removed and the engine need a oil change so it is ready for the cold wintertime on land.
The oil I use is original Volvo Penta 15W-40 VDS-3 but you can also use other brands, the most important thing is the oil you use is approved by Volvo. The VDS-3 means that the oil binds soot and it a important ingredient in the oil you use.
What differentiates the different oils is the additives but for the sake of the engine you must use a good quality brand as eg. Liqui Moly.

"You can see, when this thing is sucking out the oil there's approximaaaaammmmyuh" there is... hehehe- 1 litah." I love the elegant bailout! The fact you're doing all this in English is amazing- but the fact you're giving me an inside look at how to do all this is REALLY appreciated. I'm running an MD2040 and other than volumes I think most of what you're doing throughout this maintenance is very similar if not identifcal. I know these are older videos but wow man- many thanks! Subbed.

Regarding oil filters there are hardly any bad ones on the market. The pressure relief valve is a feature of all oil filters on the market. As a sail boat engine rusts rather than wears out (I think I've seen figures that the average sailer in the Nordics run their engine 30h or so per season) you can save and buy a cheap one. (A car engine runs at least ten times as long between changing the filter.) The Toyota car filter that was in there was as good as (or better) than the one you exchange it with. In fact there aren't any especially made for the MD-series. They were designed for a standard car oil filter size, flow etc. Volvo Penta makes a boat load (see what I did there?) of money selling you a standard automotive product and charging "yachting" prices for it. When it comes to oil it's the same thing. You'll not lose anything by running the standard "Biltema" inboard diesel engine oil. It meet the listed Volvo specifications, and you'll be much better off running a cheap oil and changing it often instead.

Yes you are totaly right. Regarding the oil filters you can get different sizes which fits to the MD2020, something I have found out is the thin filters is the best because they will not block the diesel pump arm. I know the fram filter has a bad reputation but it has a nice fit on the Volvo MD2020. This year I go for a Hengst H97W01 there is fitting the engine very well. The WIX 57145 is also a good filter you can get to a good low price. Regarding the Biltema 15W-40 oil you are also right, the oil must just meet the Volvo VDS approval to be ok for the engine. You can also get the CAV 296 pre-dieselfilter in Biltema :)

@@twiper Good tip about not blocking the diesel pump arm. And also that there are cheaper diesel-filters (though they're not standard to the engine, my Jeanneau has another pre-filter than you have). One warning about oil filters though, some are wide enough to rub against the filler stick tube (depending on clearance of specific engine). Rubbing a hole in your oil filter would probably ruin your day... :-) Keep up the good work, I enjoy your movies! Now please show how to plane the cylinder head with nothing but some sand paper and a file, and I'll be happy. ;-)

I do everything to keep people happy.... ;) - Yes there is some different pre-filters out there and interesting to learn about the different types.

The engine oil pressure will NOT chance if you put to much oil in the engine. It will just use more oil that there are to much of :) From an owner of a md2020d

Nice to meet you, I'm looking at RU-vid for reference. I'd like to ask, is PH2951 in FRAM compatible with MD2020?

Hi Tino, the diameter of my suction tubes is too large. What diameter did you use and where did you find it? thanks for your help. Luc-Joel.

Thanks for your vid. I changed the oil too. I later saw the lower suction tube. You had ( the other day) used an other ( black) tube: was the white one not working in the lower suction tube?
@twiper
@twiper 6 лет назад
No the white tube sucked false air when I tryed to suck up the oil from the lower suction tube, also why I switched to the black one.

@@risto124 That's true - but many people (like myself) use youtube as a learning tool and its getting more and more difficult to differentiate between the videos offering quality content vs those where the displayer is just peacocking . There's also a more serious side of matters when it comes to boats and engines and the consequences of what happens when they fail at critical times ... enough said
