Hi Ted First of all - thank you very much for all your great work on RU-vid… your videos are really helpful… We just purchased a Bavaria 37 HT form 2009 with a pair of D6-330. We went on seatrial last Thursday and everything was just running smoothly. Went to pick it up and sail it home the day after, and here she would not start PT engine. We managed to wiggle cables and stuff and got no errors and started to get home. 5 days later we arrived at our harbor and had engine issue on PT every day. Had a VP mechanic on board with Vodia tool to check and it was clear that the data link cable between HCU and PCU was bad - he had a test cable with him and connecting that things worked. We took the one out that apparently was faulty and tested it… there were no errors at all, connected it back, auto calibrated and no problems. 3 hours later we wanted to start as wind had slowed down and same error again, wiggling cables, auto calibrating and managed to get on the move…. So now back safe in harbor I went to test what is going on… here is what I found: Swopped cabled from SB to PT PCU and also at the HCU to see if I could move the failure to the SB engine - no luck at all, still the same. Took the main power fromswitch engines, waited 3 mins and repowered… error still there: FMI 164 SID 253 FMI 9 And MID 164 PSID 218 FMI 9 These indicate error in comm betheen HCU and PCU. Did auto calibration and got: MID 164 SID 253 FMI9 And MID 164 PSID 99 FMI 12 Last one indicates that configuration is lost I then reseated the large connector on the PCU - that gave me a new set of errors: MID 164 PSID 99 FMI 14 And MID 164 PSID 99 FMI 12 These indicate that comm is good but config is lost… so I auto calibrated again and all errors were gone - I could start engine and had full control. I shot everything down and took the main switch again, waited 3 minutes and repowered - then the issue was back. I could suspect the PCU, but reseating the large connector on the PCU seems to do something, so wondering if there could be something else that makes the PCU fail on startup… When I got the first set of errors I notice that the tilt sensor showed 56, no light in neutral, engine would not start with error “Engine in gear unable to start”. Strangely we found (during 4 days of sailing) that one the error is gone everything works perfectly throughout the trip - but when we power off the error comes back. Again reseating seems to do something good… I also notice that the actuator is no moved when applying ignition when the error is there. Would you have any ideas of what to look for? Thanks for REALLY great video’s on RU-vid, they are very much appreciated. Best regards Soren Fleron Denmark

Hi Ted, You've helped me out in the past, so I'm hoping for a little more guidance. I have twin 2008 D6 435's with an EVC-C System. About a week or two ago, while running inside the marine, the RPMS started to "hunt" around 800 RPMS, one motor would start to drop to 780, 760, 740. The other was almost opposite. I took it back to idle, then increased them again to about the 800 mark and same thing happened. Once, I got it out of the marina and increased the rpms, it ran normal for the day. Then, on another day, it started doing it again. Very intermittent. Finally, I was out fishing and while on a drift, an alarm sounded for the port motor. no codes that I could see, but my port EVC displayed showed 175 RPMs, but the engine was idling fine. I had to shut it down and restart the engine. Everything went back to normal. I'm at a complete loss on what to check. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is this a single station boat, or do you have another station to run it from to see if it occurs at that station as well. Sounds like a multilink harness issue between HCU's, due you state the rpms are moving opposite from one another. You could try an auto configuration and recalibrate the controls to see if that clears it up. Low voltage at idle rpm does quirky things to.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Thanks Ted, I do have a tower with an upper station. Next time it acts up, I'll run it from up top and see if that eliminates the issue. I'm pretty sure that my voltage is good, generally 13.6 at port and 14.1 at starboard. Have you heard of any issues with using AGM battery's? I just replaced all the batteries with new AGM's and was wondering if that would be an issue.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Thanks again for your help. I didn't think it could be a voltage issue, but I'm having second thoughts. Last weekend, the port engine wouldn't fire until I paralleled the batteries. Question: What voltage does the EVC display indicate? My Port battery shows 13.11 V, Port starter shows 13.11 V, Port EVC shows 12.9 V. The voltage drop seems excessive. Is the EVC voltage showing battery voltage, or EVC system voltage after the dc to dc converter? The Stbd side has a similar drop in voltage.

Great video! I currently have this system with dual engines and have this code: MID 164 - multilink system PSID 209 - data link FMI 9 - update rate is off My port side engine won’t start and the code I believe says the analog key isn’t communicating to the digital converter to start the engine. What could be what I need to replace? The control box? Could it be the wire harness? Could it be a bad ground? Would I want to auto calibrate or no? Please help

Hi Ted, I really enjoy your videos! I have a boat with 3 2009 ips600 d6 435 drives (EVC-C). I recently had the autopilot replaced but for some reason the new autopilot does not have any sort of control over the boat. The autopilot control head properly tracks the "rudder angle" of the IPS drives when I turn the steering wheel. Garmin support confirmed that the autopilot is connected properly and they said that the boat might need a volvo data config. What do you think? I really appreciate your help!
@tedsmarinerepair8956
@tedsmarinerepair8956 2 года назад
Sorry for the delay. There is a Volvo Penta NEMA 2000 adapter that integrates Garmin into the EVC platform. A Volvo Dealer can verify if that is properly installed and configured.
@tedsmarinerepair8956
@tedsmarinerepair8956 2 года назад
Yes, if you change any hardware within the EVC system you should do an Autoconfiguration. The autopilot needs to be plugged into the EVC NMEA 2000 interface unit as well.

Hi Ted. 1) With this fault "MID 187 PSID 226 FMI 9" is it safe to operate the engine with the controls that work or will this cause further problems? and 2) Could this fault just be showing an historic fault and therefore if all stations currently work this fault can be ignored?

Hi Ted, very informative video thanks. I would appreciate your opinion regarding malfunctioning electronics on D1-30. Today I did installation on a brand new engine D1-30 on a friend boat. After the battery was connected I wanted to check the communication with the panel and SURPRISINGLY wired malfunction the start motor start running without touching the start button. The only one button I pressed was the power button ON/OFF. Now I can see on the screen is the Volvo Penta logo for 1-2 seconds and then the screen is OFF. All of the connections are correct : panel to panel and tachometer\screen to multilink. I have no idea what the failure is but doesn’t feel right!!! Tomorrow I’ll ask the dealer what the Volvo Penta support will recommend in this situation. I assume that the answer will be that I have done something wrong.... I can call king of a mistake that firstly I forgot to connect multilink to tachometer, but I think that could damage the MDI! The all evening I’m looking for information how can I solve this and very unfortunate I found a lot of comments that many EVC panel are failing and damaging the MDI. So wired.... It would be horrible experience to install a push button on a new engine.....

If you are a vp dealer you should be able to warrenty the mdi (which may be the cause). If you are not, then an authorized dealer needs to finish and inspect and fill out the the pdi for warrenty.

Hi Ted. I’ve got a 04 440 cruisers with Volvo diesels. This has the EDC shifting single lever control. Port motor shifts smooth into drive and back to neural. Pull back a single step to reverse and still says neutral until I pull way back into the throttle zone then goes into reverse. How can I recalibrate this? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ted, I have a fault on my Volvo Penta D4 300. And I want to hear if you can help to locate the problem. The display says check multilink and it has this code MID 164 PSID 80 FMI 9. I have tried to find the groupe 30 electrical manual for the D4 engine, but whiteout luck. Hope you can help me.

The code is for a speed depth temperature multi-sensor. It connects into the multi-link bus. If you do not have one try to auto config the system to make it ignore it. If you do have one then you need to check the harness connections to see if the problem is the bus or the sensor.

Hi Ted, Again..... Great video I have twin 2008 D6 435's with EVC-C System. Upper helm, port side gave me a code MID 164 PSID 64 FMI 9 (Joystick Fault) But, I don't have a joystick. Thinking it could be the potentiometers, I went ahead and rebuilt the control unit. Plug everything in and the fault returns and will not let me calibrate the control. Plugged the port side into the starboard HCU and I can calibrate it fine. So, I know the cabling and control unit us good. Is this fault something that I would need cleared by a tech with a scanner? The HCU does have the green flickering light and I've auto-configured the system more times then I can count.
@tedsmarinerepair8956
@tedsmarinerepair8956 2 года назад
That code (EVC C without a joystick) indicates the HCU has software issues. A software "reflash" might fix it or the HCU may be faulty. Either way you require a VP service tech with a VODIA tool.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Hi Ted, thanks for there quick response. I disconnected the data cable and reconfigured the lower helm. Funny, my voltage went from 13.8 to 14.1 while running after it was disconnected. I might just order a new HCU and be done with it. In your opinion, what makes these things go? Battery voltage seems to be what I have read. But, I have new batteries and all new wiring. Before I rewired the battery banks and installed all new batteries, I had both on the starboard side go. This will be my 3rd HCU in a year.

Hi Ted, thanks for your video. I have twin D4 260 EVC 3 on a 2010 boat. I faced a default MID 164 PSID 81 FMI 4 which causes lever out of work and key button flashing on EVC (security mode). I have replaced the BOSCH potentiometer, made the auto-configuration and the calibration but default is still present. I tried to swap the left lever command on the right D4 and it works on the right D4. Therefore the control lever is ok. Fmi 4 is a low voltage fault code. So either a harness problem or faulty HCU. Try swapping the X7 harness from port hcu and lever to the starboard and starboard to port. If the problem swaps sides its a harness issue. part # 874676 If the problem stays the same then you need an HCU

It is not the way the system is sold. Each individual EVC platform is assigned a Chassis ID #. This number is created from an each engines driveline serial #. So each Chassis ID# is specific and incompatible with any others. So you can not just buy the hardware and install it.

Motor starts alarm and buzzer start after some second I try to read the alarm from the panel and the panel shows 1.1. And after the motor switch of alone. 3.motor starts rpm goes up alone alarm starts motor switch of alone. 4.keys turn to start motor starts all alone 5.turn keys at position 0 and the monitor display does not sut down. Al of this is in one engine, which is the left. Test that tried. Change the keylock with the other motor that does not do any of those Change the evc panel into an old one because the one at the main bridge it is new also change the evc from the fly to The main station Change the evc panel of the flybridge Unplug an plug again the evc box at motor Check the emergency stop FISE Please for your opinion and any help Thank you in advance
