Volvo SX-A or Volvo DPS-A Trim Ram Rebuild

In this video, I remove a leaking trim cylinder from a 2007 Four Winns Boat. The trim cylinder was leaking out of the end, making a mess on the floor, and allowing the outdrive to slowly fall over time. After removal, I completely disassembled the ram and replaced all the seals using a Five Star Marine (FSM-127) kit. This kit was very convenient and had enough seals to rebuild both rams. This was a huge savings over having to buy an entirely new ram.
To purchase this seal kit from Five Star Marine via Amazon:

To purchase replacement Power Steering and Trim Fluid to refill after making this repair:

Cool Was looking for a good video but didn’t see this in June. Thx to upload it. Anything on changing the pump check valve? Mine drops down after a week. No oil leaks or air in the system

Hi Will. No issues with the check valve so far so I can't help on that front.

Thanks for all of this information. It was very helpful. Question, did you have to bleed the system, or did you just add fluid to the trim pump, and it bled itself?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
We just added some fluid, cycled it up and down a little, added more, cycled more etc until it would move full stroke and then topped it off to proper level. No bleeding necessary. So that's good. And thanks for the kind words. I assume you got yours up and running? Any headaches?

How do you bleed the air out of the cylinder once you reattach it? Do you trim up and down woth reservoir cap off and just keep filling it up? How do you know what the proper level is?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
Bleed air by cycling. The proper level is filled to the threads. Check out the very end of the video where I talk about it. 👍

Nice video. I need to do this. Do you know the oring size used on the hydraulic lines connecting to the rams?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 месяца назад
I don't. We reused everything except what was provided in the kit. 👍

What did you use to pound the brass with to push it down further into the cylinder?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
Just a punch. Like a quarter inch punch ground off dead flat. Worked pretty good. Don't quote me on the size. But about that size.

Really wish you would have shown how you got the piston out of the ram. Seems to be the most (and possibly the only) difficult part of the job. Put the ram in a vice??? Somehow hook a slide hammer to it??? Hammer away? How hard is it to get the thing out???
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
Once you get the snap ring out u just pull it out. It's not a hard part at all. That's why I didn't show it. I just pulled it out of there. Sorry that the video missed that. It's hard to capture everything when you're busy working haha.
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
Pretty sure all it took was a socket extension or something through the end and give her a good pull. If not you could use a slide hammer too with the chain attachment. But I don't remember it being a big deal. Been a while ago now...🤔😬

One side was easy for me to get out, the other side I have not been able to get out of the ram. Any reason why one side might be so hard to get out?

hola. estupendo trabajo, hay poca información sobre este material. Como sacaste los clip, con alguna herramienta? mucha fuerza?. al sacar las botellas de los trim le sacaste los latiguillos? gracias
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
I just used a small screwdriver to get the clip out. Sorry I didn't get that on film. It didn't take too much force. We took the hoses loose when we took the ram off of the boat.

Thank you very much. I have tried many times with a screwdriver to remove the clip and in my volvo it is very hard, I was afraid to continue making war

I see the rest, changing seals and seals, as more intuitive. But for me the complicated thing is to remove the clip. Cheers

@605BOLT 2 года назад
@@pedrocabocasas5748 right on. Ya. Just get in there with a pick or screwdriver and pry that ring out of the channel. Pound the brass part down a little first too.

How were you able to get the cylinder out? I have tried knocking it towards me, and hit i with a hammer?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
Need to tap the brass part down into the bore a little. Just enough to remove the snap ring. Then pull the entire ram out including the brass end seal using a slide hammer. 👍

Yes, thanks. Found out there was a snap ring.. hard to get out!! Why haven’t they made it with some holes in, so you Can get it out.. 🙄 Thanks for the great video! Where did you order the repair kid - link? 😃
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
It is a huge pain in the ass to get out of there. Not convenient at all. Link for the seal kit I used is in the description of the video (Five Star Marine). Thanks for your kind comment!

The link that you have to the parts, is that for both the cylinders? 😀
@605BOLT

Yes. It's a two pack basically. Buy one kit and it has enough seals for both rams. Or doubles if you break something haha

Yes its crazy! A new one cost around 3.000$ 😱 I have White hydraulic Oil, and I know one is leaking because of the bubbels. But better safe than sorry, and change both 😀

Strange that you didn’t post the only real critical part. Everything you show in this video is elementary. The copper part is incredibly soft. Make sure you don’t destroy it (like I did mine) when trying to clear the snap ring.

They can get marred up but it shouldn't be smoked. If it is, then there was no way to rebuild anyway and it is what it is.
