I get 560 miles out of my petrol V70 (1.6 T4) on long runs. Just drive smooth, read the road, and these things will sip fuel.

In my experience, cruise control it’s the best way to save fuel. I use it as often as I can, even inside the city. Mixed road/city driving is terrible, although on the motorway fuel consumption lowers notably. In my case, the most economic highway speed in 90-95 km/h. Over 100 the consumption goes notably up. That’s a bit slow for Spanish highways were top legal speed in 120 and most people drives t that speed. At 120, the consumption is terrible. In my last tank I’ve managed 720km but with a lot of bumper to bumper traffic. The D4 on my XC-70 is far more frugal, as I can average 46mpg almost effortlessly, or some 1000km per tank. I’ve noticed that, compared with the XC-70, cruise control on the S-80 tends to use lower gearing for a given speed (6 speed auto box vs 8 speed on the XC-70) so sometimes going to a higher gear manually can help on some speed ranges were the cruise control tends to stick to a lower gear revving the engine unnecessarily

my s40 1.6d 2010 i Cruise Controled for 2 hours and my estimate until empty tank was at 800miles , after already driving 200miles. Compared to manually driving yourself it goes to about 600miles to empty tank after about 100-200 miles after driving. cruise control is great on volvo

I have the s60 2.4 D5 2011 auto with sport mode surprisingly I get 40 mpg no matter what even in sport it doesn't drop much, the car is fabulous, tip for improved economy- well serviced engine good tire pressures No binding brakes and don't carry a boot full of crap!

There are two types of Cruise Control on this age of Volvos. The type you have there. On the V70 I just picked up. I have radar cruise control. If I have cruise control set and catch up a slower moving vehicle, the car will apply the brakes itself and slow the car down. So has the ability to slow itself down. Not sure if this also happens when car overspeeds i.e. going down a hill. The previous V70 came after having a F10 530d and F30 330d - I had got used to the bimmers applying the brakes themselves to maintain the correct speed, so was a small shock when old V70 overspeed going down hill in 50 mph zone on smart motorway .. not by much .. and easy to sort .. but you know had set the cruise control to be bang on the limit.

Hi, here you have my opinion on the D5 engine, the 2.4L 5cylinder twin turbo. The power is available almost from start to high end revs.. It is very sophisticated and I love to drive it (xc60 awd). When you look at the petrol engine's they consume more when alsking the power of the engine. But I love the D5 engine for sure. You mention the tire pressure, that's a good one. What I've seen when changed the transmission atf fluid, the fuel economy also even increased. Maybe you should do that olso ?

Wow! I get like less than 300 miles per tank on the v8 but i drive it really fast! Weeeeeeeee! :)

The biggest difference for D5 Volvos seems to be manual vs auto boxes, I love the auto but around town it’s not economical… especially to what I had before a manual BMW520d touring.

How often do you wash yours ? Mine is nearly every week and an under chassis wash definitely every month during the winter. You're definitely right on the amount of crap people carry in the boot n on the back seat. Having fun back in the Volvo Clan again but still love my SAAB 9-3 Aero for a blast 😃

Are u sure about the electrical components putting more stress on the engine from the alternator? The alternator spins at the same rpm regardless of what you are running. The AC however, engages and puts resistance on the belts making the engine work harder. Never thought running electric features affected fuel.
@aldred309
@aldred309 3 года назад
In a smaller engined car, sit at idle then turn something on like the headlights that uses a reasonable amount of power and you will see the revs drop due to the increased strain caused by the alternator then the car will compensate by adding more fuel to maintain the idle. More electrical usage means more fuel usage.
@summerofsteroids
@summerofsteroids 3 года назад
@@aldred309 This. I've turned my high beams on while idling and I can hear, and see, the rpms drop.

@____________________________.x 2 года назад
The electrics create a load on the alternator, the back emf drops as a result creating a magnetic resistance, this requires more effort to turn. You can try this with a child’s toy, short out the motor leads and it’ll be harder to turn

A good option is not to fill the tank as a full tank is heavy tank full is about 75kg

Thanks for the tips. You mentioned 56mph, guess cruise can't do that as my cruise seems to go up in increments of 5mph i.e 45, 50, 55, can it be changed?

How is putting it into neutral dangerous? I do it often, if I am going down a hill where I know there is a stop sign, I'll pop it into neutral. No point in sitting at 1500 RPMs going down a hill, when I can just pop it into neutral and idle at 600 RPMs and put it back into drive when I come to a complete stop. I've had the transmission serviced at 95K miles (2010 S80 3.2L FWD) for longevity, and have no issues shifting. I drive in slapshift often, too. The car will sometimes be in 3-4K RPMs and I'll manually shift it up a gear so it isn't revving that high before shifting.
@dissectionproductions8783
@dissectionproductions8783 2 года назад
When you sift Into neutral you engine needs to use gas to keep it running. When you coast In gear your fuel Injectors shut off because the momentum if keeping the engine turning.. So you are actually wasting gas coasting in neutral..
@summerofsteroids
@summerofsteroids 2 года назад
@@dissectionproductions8783 As far as I'm aware, the fuel injectors keep going to keep the engine running. To test this, I rolled on a straightaway. In gear, I come to a faster stop and don't coast as far, resulting in me having to give it gas to keep going due to engine braking. On that same straightaway road, if I pop into neutral, I drop essentially 1 MPH per mile, so I can roll for some time. My fuel average also shot up during this time in neutral, compared to it remaining the same while in gear and coasting.
@dissectionproductions8783
@dissectionproductions8783 2 года назад
@@summerofsteroids trust me, when you are in a free roll your Injectors turn off and as long as you are in the the momentum keeps the engine turning kinda like push starting... If you put it in neutral or press the clutch and free roll then the injectors come back on to keep the engine running..
@dissectionproductions8783
@dissectionproductions8783 2 года назад
@@summerofsteroids your car rolls less in gear because some of the momentum is being used to turn the engine while you roll. When you are in neutral all of your gears are disconnected from the engine and the engine is basically idling..

There is NO WAY to get better miles from a volvo!! Thats why us volvo drivers love them!!!. Even driving like a granny doesnt help. 😁. The only way to do it is dont use the car.

Couldn't help but share. Really enthusiastic about driving economically and might be thought as a bit over the top but in my book economy can equal safety. 08 plate V70 geartronic on 72,000. Serviced as per the book. Tyres? Recommended pressures and I don't believe the brand named three give any advantage over budgets - they all supposedly meet the regulations anyway. You don't need to be driving to extremes to exploit performance issues so slow down. Thanks for informative vids fella.
