There's something about winter driving in Norway that is beautiful and mesmerizing. I'm adding a winter road trip in Norway to my bucket list, looking forward to the end of Covid
Nice test of my car. Got my 4th of December and I like it very much. A new update from Volvo is expected to come at the end of January with a number of improvements. Heat pump and heat for battery are some of the things to come. In the spring I will drive Gudbrandsdalen-Lofoten it will be a long trip. I am very happy with my Volvo XC40 Recharge Eletric P8!
Hi, do you have more information/details about the Update? I miss the range display in Km, could it be that this will be one point of 5he coming update? Thanks
@@hansn.9590 Updates will come to all stores that sell the car. Everyone needs to get this update. After this, everything goes through the air OTA. Alarm for tailgate, heat pump and heating / cooling of battery shall be included in this update. One who contacted Volvo to get some answers. Then we'll see what happens. But updates are not far off.
Kris thanks for these amazing range test videos, I’ve watched many videos on other channels and I always get confused but the way you explain how the evs charge and the difference in KW and battery 🔋 life on EVs soooo well I feel like a pro now lol! Btw I can’t wait to see your next XC90 EV! I also think you should do a video of your wish list for the next Volvo XC90.
Great content. You are getting better and better at this in my humble opinion:). A breath of fresh air to focus on other EVs than that American brand w the Southafrican dude cant remember his name🤣
Kris maybe it didn't pre-heat the battery to the earlier charging station because it was planning to arrive with a low state of charge, and pre-heating the battery could have used too much energy and prevented you from arriving there. Therefore maybe the car pre-heats only if it thinks it will arrive with a state of charge greater than 5%, 10% or maybe even 15%.
After watching this video I won’t be changing my petrol XC 40 anytime soon! Too much wasted time at charging stations + constant ‘range anxiety’ and having to a.ways plan ahead to re charge. I love everything about my XC40 R design (petrol)😁
Batteries charge fastest from 0-50% and slowest from 80-100%. So it's better to charge more stops than to try charge it full. This is according to manufacturers' recommendation also.
Found your channel through seeing you on Bjorn Nyland's video. You make good stuff. Charging speed sometimes varies for no apparent reason. I think sometimes it is the fault of the stations, not the vehicle, but I don't know how we can test that.
The car does not heat the battery to prepare charging. And the heat pump does not work under 5°C (plus). All battery heating is done by the HVHA (High Voltage Coolant heater).
@@walp86 Before OTA update 1.3 the lowest temperature was indeed +5°C. I have no information if they changed anything after the first major update OTA 1.3.
Interesting, but a little question. For this 610km run. what was the price of the electricity ? that run here in sweden is about the same time with a petrol vechile, you always need a break and lunch. But with a consumption with around 8L/100km for a normal car., that would be around 49L and 730SEK for the petrol.. What is the price for this run with an EV? :)
As long as you don't have any tool to check on the battery temperature, possible reasons for slow charging is just a guess. To be able to make charts of all kinds of parameters is basically interessting to compare different cars too. Besides the guessing, a quite interesting video. Thank you!
Thank you for an interesting test. It's a pleasure to listen to the way you speak to us in the video! Now to my comment! Could this missing pre-heat be due to the fact that the car think it is better to reach the charing station than spend the energy left on pre-heat and not reach the charing station. Remember you arrived with 0 energy left in the battery. What do you think?
Regarding subscriber goal: Drive to East Cape (Vardø) and test the new chargers in Finnmark. Vardø is located east of Istanbul and is an area which Teslabjørn has not tested properly.
Thanks for these Videos Kris. Very useful. Any chance to have the results more readable? Like Google Sheet? It is Impossible to read the Excel data on a normal mobile phone.
Volvo just updated its software over air which according to their site improves charging and distance capability. Will you be testing the xc40 p8 again?
I'm wondering if you can display the music info (artist/song) in the guage cluster? It'd be nice to have that there if Google Maps is on the center stack screen, or vice versa. When I'm navigating it's nice to have the Google maps up somewhere but I also to have the radio information up too.
How about a (long) drive around your city of Oslo, at town speeds, to see how far you can get compered to the normal long distant runs you do. Lots of people are getting into Bev's as towns and cities are getting into congestion charging ICE cars. It will be interesting to find out the economy of BEV'S at lower restrict speeds.
As a owner of a XC40 P8 Recharge here in the Netherlands I have a question: What's the best driving speed to go as fast as possible from A to B, assuming you want to drive as far as possible within one day. Like in this video, would it have been possible to charge only 2 times if the highway driving speed would have been for example 100 instead off 120? Maybe the total time would have been better ???
@@smasheduptoaster9186 Mostly good. +good to drive (Sporty but still comfy) +more than enough + very good speakers (Herman Kardon) + good seats + good lights for night driving - Bad remote control app still - the glossy surfaces - almost no apps still in the infotainment - still no problem with the car
@@stratus91le Thanks. Sounds pretty good. I love the Google integration too. Assistant and Maps are amazing. Especially with the Harman Kardon system. But I totally agree on the apps. Tesla has so much including Netflix. Although it's not a huge deal for me because I don't road trip in it.
Is it possible that you will test XC40 P8 range with newer software? There should be now January software which decreases little bit consumption. I am also interested if you can test EVs with a roofbox in winter.
13.20 woman walking along in road. Eyes on the recharge station and then “oh shit” I thought she saw me…. Did the Volvo warn you that there was a pedestrian you were about to run over or did you look back to where you were driving? Thanks for the review J
With my 2017 XC60 D4, I drive almost 1000km on a 110km/h highway with one tank. EVs are for city driving and short distance journies, not really something reliable. Reaching a charging station with 0% battery state, and you discover the charger is out of order, lovely when you are in a Scandanavian winter...
Greetings from your new subscriber from the Canary Islands 🇮🇨. This car has just been put up for sale here. Even with the weather changes, I see that the load is very slow and the consumption is brutal. It looks like an American gasoline car.Looks like a consumer eater
@@KrisRifa yes of course, I meant on Google maps. If the entry you chose doesn't have hpc or charger speed specified, maybe the car thinks it's either just "a location" or a slow charger and doesn't bother to preheat? It should work better, of course, but trying to find reasons why it's not working for this hpc but worked for the other one.
@@KrisRifa yeah it doesn't really make sense. Unless it's something silly like the name has 150kw but it's not listed as a hpc (I guess they use search attributes for chargers to determine if it's a hpc) Odd!
Yes, it might be... but the over head time of stopping and connecting make the savings small imo. And I think people would prefer to stop as few times as possbile :) So I think three stops is manybe more realistic...
@@KrisRifa It would be worth testing stopping more often but charging less and see how much of a difference it makes. If the car charged quickly then it wouldn’t make and real difference but at the speeds you seem to be getting it could make a big difference.
"Car and Driver" just reported a fall in battery capacity in their Tesla Model 3 of 7% in 24,000 miles. Not insignificant! It was plugged in 842 times with 500 times from super chargers. It appears that Teslas don't do very well doing a lot of highway miles with super chargers. If I was doing a lot of long road trips, I'd go for the XC40 PHEV over any BEV. ..... The XC40 P8 range and charging speed for daily driving is more than sufficient.
@@DougFrantz like half a century ago. Ive never had that problem in all my driving life. Certainly not waiting for another half of my life for electric cars to get the range of gas cars.
I notice that you get used to 0% battery all the time. When reaching your goal, I like to see you keeping to empty the battery to 0% before arriving the charging station EVERYTIME. This should be fine and easy for you. Do it in your e-tron, e-tron S, XC40, and more. In addition, this would help you to analyze the charging speed accurately - more videos for you, Kris.
Hi Kris ... thanks for the excellent points about XC40 ... next time you review a vehicle with Google system, could you please mute out yiu saying "Hey Google" because all my phones, speakers and other devices think you talk to them ;-)
Driving on snow-covered roads, or partially snow-covered roads in minus degrees, is like driving in tailwinds and gives less friction and thus lower consumption. If, on the other hand, it is above zero in temperature and sloppy, then you get increased consumption and thus like driving in wet road conditions.
The consumption is crazy high and simply does not make sense to drive an EV car presently. It is very expensive to charge at such high speeds in the UK (69p/kw) and therefore it is significantly more expensive to drive this car vs and ICE car.
I’m not too sure if this is an electric one you are showing us of the XC 40, but I’m not interested in the electric I don’t like the car. I’m sorry to hear that they’re not only making it now in electric. Thank you
This video shows very well that electric cars are trash for long trips. Now we all have nothing else to do than spend time planning for the trip, sitting in freezing cold for two hours to wait for a battery to charge. And of course, don’t take that wrong turn or scenic detour or you’ll end up towed. Try that with a wife and two kids and the car packed with stuff. Somewhere in Italy, France or Spain. You’ll end up robbed to the last dime if you are lucky.
that's not the title for this video though. But I agree that it's a bit click-baity, and I think Kris knows (since he mentioned that in one of his videos).
Go swimming next week outside in a lake or in the ocean. ;) I really want to buy an EV for my next car but holy cow sitting around charging isn't my idea of fun.
Get an EV that is efficient and charges fast, like a Model 3 or Porsche Taycan. *Most of the time the car will be waiting for you, not the other way around.* Everyone occasionally need to stretch their legs, eat, buy a coffe, visit the restroom, check their mail or whatever- during long trips. 🍔 A used one, or even a ID.3/ID.4/Mach-E would work fine. There are lots of different models to choose from that fall into this category in 2021. However, a Tesla is probably the best choice if you’re skeptic about charging. You typically drive 3-4 hours, and charge for 25 minutes.. It always works and there are almost never any queues. Remember that most of the driving is edited out of the videos you see. That’s why it seems like these RU-vidrs are always charging, or struggling to charge some brand new press car. 🙂 Actually, most people rarely visit fast chargers at all. It’s not like gas stations. A recent survey from Norway shows that 93% of all charging is done at home, at work, hotels or similar. It takes only 5 seconds of your precious time. 🙏
@@omelvold You might be right. There's a number of trip I do in Canada that would require charging especially in the winter. I have to look into the charging structures in and around Ontario. Re the Model 3. I drove it and the car I drove had a bunch of build quality issues. It was brand new. I also couldn't stand the feel of the brake and the 1 screen thing was really annoying. I'll wait to try the ID4, Mach E and the Ioniq 5. Thanks for your input!
@@kevinn1158 I see. I’m sure you’ll find the right EV soon. The Ioniq 5 looks really promising! Just make sure whatever car you choose is able to fast charge somewhat consistently in cold weather. 😬
That is just to long, more than 1,5 hours doing nothing. Or more than 1,5 longer travel time on this EV. And that trip is a short run. It is said to manage 417 km on a charge and manage 150kW of charging. 307km one way, in your test. SO the EV lie continues. Still shit.
The range is a joke and the time to recharge is more than a joke I have a CRV hybrid and make 1000 km on a tank, consumption around 5.5 liters x 100 km Untill EVs have a range of 600 km at least and a charging time of max 15 minutes I wouldn't consider buying one I just imagine my last trip to Croatia 2 years ago with my then XC 60 D4 in an XC 40 e Just nightmares coming up...
Challenge when you get to 20k subs... pick an EV to drive from Norway to the tip of Spain via sweden, Finland... Poland Germany, France, Spain. Range will be your best friend
