This is my 2007 XC90 D5 project. I bought this car with gearbox failure which ended up being just a gear shifter fault. It did shift roughly when it got hot - most of the gears the revs jumped really high before it managed to get the gear in. When cold everything was perfect. I had a transmission which got coolant in it due to failed radiator and had a problem with the turbine but other than that shifted fine. The job was successful and it fixed all the shift problems. I do have to do another oil change because the oil looked awful in it...

If your transmission is slipping and throwing codes, check your driver side CV axle. If the internal field goes bad, it will suction transmission fluid and inject grease into the tranny. The change in viscosity will cause the trans to fail, all diagnostics will be wrong. When this happens, change the transmission fluid and filter, and install a Transgo shift kit. Replace your CV axle. Reset the codes and it will last another 100k if you haven’t burned the clutches off. This issue is specific to the 4T65 transmission, possibly others .

Hi. Thanks for the video. Makes it look very easy. I managed slip off the cover, though it scraped the subframe but no deformation. I couldn't get the bolt out to drop the subframe, limited tools and just stuck bolts. Now that it's out, I got a replacement VB and cleaned all the solenoids, tested them and theyre working fine mechanically and electrically. I'm just concerned about the fitting the vb cover again as I don't know the torque specs for the bolts on the vb cover. Couldn't find any online either. I've opted for Victor Reinz reinzosil. It cures really well and forms a decent rubberized seal. I was impatient and filled up the atf too soon and had to remove and reseal. So I've learnt why the wait is needed, seen the error of my deeds and also seen just how good this sealant is

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year, dealing with dark arts of transmission is something that a lot of people are nervous about approaching. Great video explaining all the steps and potential problems.

My (UK registered) 2006 XC90 with 175k Miles (281k Km) and TF-80SC has this issue (shift flares mostly between 2 and 3) but my 2007 with 155k Miles (249k Km) apparently has a slightly modified valve body and is fine (so far). It's apparently a known issue and there is a thread on one of the Volvo forums with chassis number ranges affected. Anyway, I done a DIY "rebuild" on the valve body using a Transgo kit which involved clearing out the solenoids (after cutting them open) and fitting new (stronger) springs and suchlike, not yet test driven the car being one of my slower projects at the moment. Hopefully it's solved the issues. I have VADIS to reset the oil life and adaptations too.

Hi, I've the xc90 2006 d5 as well and I'm just recently experiencing this after recent oil changes or top up rather. There was a rather rough gear change which I immediately notified the mechanic. Once it was topped up, it vanished and it's been a few months since, perhaps 4. Not sure if I need to have the valve body rebuilt, replaced yet but just to confirm, is the valve body referred as AW 50-50SN?

Hi. I gave the same issue with my xc70 3.2. Can you provide more information about your way of rebuilding and how it affect after?
@gavinstirling7088
@gavinstirling7088 Год назад
@@Mr.body1917 I actually sold the car a while ago but it was re-registered and driving again so seems the repair was a success. If you Google for " Transgo TF80SC " it should be near the top of the search results. It's a complicated job but I'm only a hobbyist mechanic and managed it. It did take me a few weeks and the car was already partly dismantled at the front which helped through.

I am a little confused about the method of pulling the pan. Did you lift the engine and lower the subframe both, or just lower the subframe after not being able to remove the pan by lifting the engine? I need to do some work on a 2007 v8 model outdoors and would like to eliminate any extra (or unnecessary) work. The video is very helpful!
@HeapsofProjects
@HeapsofProjects Год назад
I think you can get away by just lowering the subframe but you have to support the engine at the same time as engine mounts sit on the subframe. You won't get it by just lifting the engine.

can I ask what tray you put on the roof, and how you mounted it
@HeapsofProjects

Its a roof basket but can't remember what brand it was. It's just mounted with some U clamps/exhaust clamps straight to the side rails. Otherwise it was sitting too hight for my liking.

@HeapsofProjects
@HeapsofProjects 2 года назад
Not on this one but I have before and never had an oil change fix anything once it was already acting up. I think it's important to change oil while it's still working.

@@HeapsofProjects Volvo (or is it Aisin Warner) say that these gearboxes are "sealed for life" but I agree that a fluid change is definitely recommended, perhaps after taking a look a the colour rather than mileage based. If it's a secondhand car with a tow bar then you never know how hard a life the gearbox has had.

I've just ordered the new version body with new pan gasket, is there a gasket for the actual valve body, as I'm unaware of one, thanks
@HeapsofProjects
@HeapsofProjects 2 года назад
No, the pan uses liquid gasket/silicone but the valve body has a small gasket just under a small cover and that can be usually reused.
@ryanevans8033
@ryanevans8033 2 года назад
@@HeapsofProjects so I'd have to swap the valve body gasket over? I'm using a sump gasket as I don't want to wait for liquid gasket to set before filling with oil
@HeapsofProjects
@HeapsofProjects 2 года назад
@@ryanevans8033 it is just a small gasket under the small cover held in place by 2 bolts. You will see it. The actual valve body has no gasket. You don't have to wait for liquid gasket to set, I have always put it together and filled straight away and never had any leaks. I have done it approx 15 times over the years.

I may use Victor rienz instant gasket then, one more thing, I slowed your video down but couldn't tell if you undid the front and rear vacuum mounts to lower the subframe, I'm changing the valve body at the weekend thanks

My xc90 misses a shift and goes into neutral between 3rd and 4th once every 1000 miles. It fixes itself within a few seconds. Does this sound like a valve / solenoid issue?
@HeapsofProjects

It most likely is a sticky solenoid but can't really be 100% sure

It is a custom front and rear shocks extended 60mm and custom rear springs. I have put about 15k km on the current test set but as it needs bit of adjustment I am in a process on getting second test set made.
