VOODOO ZOMBIES: RESURRECTED CORPSES, BLACK MAGIC & CLONES

Thank you Jessica for this interesting podcast. Dennis has a good grasp of Vodoun. Maybe I can add a little more context having lived in Haiti for three years during which I went to many Vodoun ceremonies. The only times I had fun doing anything religious in my life were when I would go to African American churches in the southern United States and Vodoun ceremonies in Haiti. In Vodoun, they definitely believe in God - but a God who is busy animating the universe and everything in it. To reach God it is necessary to appeal to the Loa (spirits) just as the Catholics appeal to the saints. Catholicism and Vodoun are intertwined. The French slavers who worked the Haitians (kidnapped West Africans at that point) to death and treated them brutally would have considered themselves to be good Catholics. They made the slaves attend Catholic Mass on Sundays during which they made connections between the saints and the loa they already knew. Saint Patrick who is often pictured with snakes having forced them out of Ireland was associated with Damballah, the ancient snake spirit representing ancestral wisdom for example. Some of the slaves had herbal skills and were able to learn which plants were poisonous. As a result, sometimes a slaver would drop dead under mysterious circumstances and that would often be blamed on "black magic". Many of the Vodoun leaders in Haiti still have herbal skills which matters in a country where the health care system was very weak even before the current troubles. There is some evidence that certain concoctions can induce a catatonic state although it also works on a metaphorical level - what could be more zombie-like than going to an office every day and doing uninteresting and non-engaging work just to pay the bills? There are those in Vodoun who serve with one hand and those who serve with two. Those who serve with one hand will always do good, no matter what. Those who serve with two hands will do good or evil if the price is right. Anything relating to zombies will only be for those who serve with two hands. In the end, Vodoun is a spiritual life-line to Africa. It's a way of saying all of us come from Africa, Africa is a source of strength, and nobody can take that away from us no matter how bad things get. It is also a religion of resistance as the fight for independence really began with a vodoun ceremony. Haiti became the first free black republic and the only country to lead a successful slave rebellion. In so doing, they were punished horribly by France and the United States. It's not an accident Haiti is where it is today - but that's a topic for another day.

Without one there can not be the other.

King of the Congo chose to expand hus land so he took captive the border people's and there property. Sold two newly unfree people to Portuguese sailors. Paraded there new slaves to the world. From asia to the Americas to European countries
