Orion had his problems - like he said on his channel, cancer and drug addiction - but for a time, he was one of my favourites on the show. Thanks for animating him along with all the others.
It's possible. I remember an episode of the show before he left where he said he had cancer and was either recovering or about to get surgery (I haven't been through the early ones in a while). And I only listened to his explanation the one time; could have been both.
scw55 it was both. He had chemotherapy for the cancer and also got HIV which dragged his health down and he got Addicted to drugs (not sure what kind but I don't really blame him, Chemo and HIV must have sucked hardcore) and while I miss him, I think he needed to just step back and focus on himself. You could tell towards the end of his involvement he wasn't quite as... There. As he was before
I won't get into all the outside of game stuff, since that's a whole big other story. As Tiberius I realize that he did great when he was in his lane. Like this professor Tiberius. The smartest one of the group and a bit of a braggart. I realize that as the in game problems started happening it was when he started trying to be in ALL the lanes. He didn't want to just be the smart spellcaster. He decided he was going to make sexual jokes like Scanlan, he got a pet like Vex, He started crafting (Percy) melee weapons, and using them brutally (Grog). He wanted to shine not only in his moments but take over the moments he'd seen others shine.
Anyone else realise if Scanalan hadn't made this trade he wouldn't have his Ioun Stone, and very well may not have got the Blessing from her? So Tiberius did contribute to the victory over Vecna in a way
I thought that when he brought out the Ioun stone. I was shocked at how well it had worked out, and - if it had been Mercer's intent - a subtle nod was given to Tiberius/Orion because of it.
Yeah I'm sure if Orion took the Ioun stone and left there would've been absolutely no way to find the Sphinx. Matt would've just said "tough luck" and ended the campaign.
I not saying that, it's just a nice nod to the character. Also, maybe if Scanlan didn't have the Ioun stone he wouldn't have felt ready/worthy to take the test, and Ioun could have chosen Percy instead?
@@spudsbuchlaw Its not a 5e item official item. In previous editions, you could concentrate on multiple spells (most of which werent as insane as some concentration spells now) So, Matt seeing his players miss that aspect, put in an item that allows you to maintain conentration on 2 spells, and the first spell will fall off at the end of your next round.
@@chungleandthebims167 especially considering the piece of shit Orion Acaba is. There's no excuse anymore for people being ignorant when the information is out in the open.
This trade was integral to the victory over Vecna as well as many other foes...If Scanlan had not taken that stone, many moments where he helped turn the tide of battle among other things simply would not have happened...Goes to show how even the simplest of moments can have far reaching consequences...
As much love Scanlan got for being such a great magic force in the final battle,I cannot help but think how crazy powerful Tiberius would have been. (Plus he could have also had a 9th level Wish) :'(
Garrison Watts yea, there were so many situations after tibs left where I thought he could be a powerhouse, but honestly, it would make, many of their fights a lot, less interesting, he would just demolish everything.
Kevin C , yeaaah I agree. Sorcerers can become pretty bullshit. XDD Especially if they specialize in evocation. I've experienced a couple of times when a dm thought it was a great idea to have us fight sorcerers that outnumbers our party. It always ended with an awkward silence when they realized they had just wiped us all out in little to no effort.
True scanlan as a Bard, doesn't really excel at anything so it's kind of his job to fill any missing rolls, and well with Tiberius gone that's exactly what he does, by becoming the team arcane spell caster. Which is probably why he never took any restoration spells outside of healing word.
Though he would have had more conterspells, I believe Matt would have inroduced more to increase risk. Having an extra player at the table is huge, especially a spell caster.
Daniel Gordon i don't get it. How is it metagaming to know that an item that would be great for you isn't being used at all by another character? "Hey, I see you have a battle ax and I have a wand. As a warrior I would prefer to have an ax. As a magic caster you have no use for an ax. Shall we trade?"
@Leisure Tiberius as a character does not know what a "sorcerer point" is or what a "round" is all he would know is that he has the power to cast spells quickly sometimes
It's Metagaming in the same way Scanlan calling himself Burt Reynolds & "yelping it" is metagaming. It's not technically stuff they're supposed to know about, but it doesn't actually harm immersion in or enjoyment of the game, which is what makes metagaming a negative thing.
I actually really liked Tiberius at first, but obviously Orion's behavior got worse as time went on. I miss the character more than the player, but I do hope Orion is doing better and has found another campaign to play in.
It's not a dnd stream, its more a teleplay based on Tiberius' adventures with his family. His version of Draconia is a parallel world to that of Exandria so it wouldn't be affected by where Matt wanted to take the campaign.
Moments like this make me remember that I did really like Tiberius at one point. It wasn't until the start of the Briarwood arc that I became really bothered by him, and that was before I found out about all the drama.
People just didn't understand dragonborns.. Orion role played dragonborn arrogance, and people think it's Orion himself.. Dragonborns as a race inherently think that all other races, especially humans, are inferior.
Zesprit15 Agreed. But I do wish Tibsy as a character could have stayed in the game somehow. Orion may not have quite fit with the crew, but I think he was a good rp'r where the dragonborn characteristics are concerned. . Tiberius brought a different dynamic to the team, and I would have liked to see how he progressed and changed personality wise.
See, this is the thing that really kinda irks me when people bring stuff like this up though, it's NOT the fact that he didn't fit well with the group at all. Remember, they were playing this for over two years prior. Do people REALLY have so little faith in Mathew they they think he would not only do nothing in a situation where one of his players was "disrupting" the game for everyone else, but then allow that person to do so while broadcasting their personal campaign to the world? It seemed pretty clear that the players themselves were perfectly fine with the dynamic they constructed over those first couple years, it simply came down to people misunderstanding character interactions for real-life interactions and such. (see: Vax vs. Grog early on in the show) I personally feel that everyone that played a role in Crit Role did a great job. I legitimately cannot recall a single player character I disliked, let alone hated as much as some people seemed to hate Orion. (or Marisha, for that matter) I just wish people would learn to be a little more critical of their own dislikes, and maybe try not to speak on other's behalf when it's clear they don't have the full picture.
I once red a fairy tale where a bunch of bandits kidnaps a young princess. After learning that she is a princess, or a lady or whatever, they are shocked by the fact that they have met a lady and ponder about what to do when in the presence of such. She begins to make demands which the bandits then follows, due to their belief that you should always do as a lady commands. For some reason I can't help but think about that story when watching this video
I loved Tibs. He was my favourite character and was really upset when he left. I almost stopped watching critical role because I missed his quirky and slightly bossy ways, but I'm glad I stuck it out to the end. I have another favourite character, although not technically part of vox machina, he is another red dragonborn. Arkan the cruel, such a sneaky bugger lol.
This kind of makes me miss Tiberius, but at the same time, he was so irrational and basically a loose cannon all the time. Also inconsiderate to NPCs and self-centered. So meh. (Not talking about Orion, by the way. Tiberius. The character)
Yeah, I know what you mean. I would've loved to see where he would've ended up as a character if Orion had been able to stick and grow with the group. c: He could've become a super lovable character or a total monster. Or maybe both.
To be honest he was my favorite along with Scanlan from episode 1 until shopping and shipping. It wasn't his 2 hour grocery list that killed it but the tension between all the players was thick and it leaked into the game and made it impossible to enjoy. One of my favorite moments in Avatar was the filler episode with Uncle Iroh because it gives them opportunities to show inner depth to a character. This is due to outside influences and probably only would have grown worse but if Orion was healthy and confident in his ability to say monstrous transformation or no, i would have loved the story they would make with the character. Now i rely on travis and sam to carry what i lack without Orion but the episode i'm on right now (33/34) Travis has been seemingly not feeling it and Marsha is a bit oppressive. Orion kept the party in the "roll your eyes and carry on" mood keeping everyone else in check per se, while being amusing in his musings. Now i can feel his presence missing. NOTE: Not hating on any of them and don't want to hate on any of them lol.
AOE Frosty It gets better. I think part of the issue was that Marisha was kinda taking the spot that Tiberius had left. She was being overly confrontational about all the the groups choices (even if its in her character nature) but then would just go off and do whatever she wanted at several points, forcing the group to react to her. I have a player like that in one of my groups and it can be very frustrating at times. Overall, Tensions where high at the time and some players trying to "Step Up" and fill Tiberius roll caused some issues imo.
AOE Frosty it get's a lot better. Travis starts to carry the show with his dumber and dumber ideas. Marisha is still Marisha and Laura is still the same thou. But Travis really just pushes it to 11 in order to keep things entertaining.
Marisha has sort of annoyed me since the very start. I'm still in the Underdark below Kraghammer and she's just very 'screw you all' and just pouts when she doesn't get her own way. I get that she succeeded and got Clarota but when the entire group said "no, we're trying to think of a plan" and she said "Nah, I steal the magic carpet and go do my own thing." The entire group just sighs and rolls their eyes. That's not a positive influence on a group. Not to mention on top of that, especially in the beginning she's constantly ignoring Matt to look at her phone. I get they all use their phones at some point but keep your ears open, please.
Tiberus explaining that he needs the stone is like my DM telling my arracrokra druid to use the invisibility cloak he gave me XD so i did and went on a thrilling ride of minecarts in the underdark.
Despite being a real piece-of-work in his personal life, I think most within the community would be humble enough to acknowledge that Orion was a bad person playing a truly remarkable character in Tiberius. And admittedly, this was perhaps one of the single funniest inter-party interactions of all of Campaign 1. xD
This wasn't exactly META gaming. All the information presented in Tibb's explanation....he had attained in combat, and they had learned of the item. This was more of an example of POWER gaming, where a player wanted both character to be more powerful by the use of their items, since Sam wasn't using his circlet at all, and Tiberius would have noticed him frustrated that he was out of magic in a fight a handful of times. Though yes, it was hilarious. Please don't use the word metagaming in place of powergaming (: Though theres an argument that in order to power game you must meta game!
imagine what it would have been like with scanlan and concentration circlet... like this moment was funny, and he was right at the time, but if scanlan would have held on to that, oh boy could he have done amazing things with it towards the end :D
After watching the first 20ish episodes, Tibs was my favorite because of moments like this. Unfortunately, meth destroys people and I hope Orion is doing better. It's unfortunate how things played out afterwards too because it looks like (in my opinion) if Orion had given up rights to Tibs, maybe Tibs could have been back in Amazon's animated series, instead it looks like he's been erased. Meth really meths things up yo
This is just my personal headcanon, but the first few minutes of Orion Acaba's Draconian Knights gives the impression Tiberius is a dimensional traveller. I personally like to think when Ocaba's Tiberius left the early campaign he plane-shifted back to his dimension and thus begins Ocaba's Draconian Knights radio play. Meanwhile, the Tiberius that resides in Exandria is one we never actually met. For the sake of closing a plothole with that, assume AC's Tiberius arranged for Lockheed to be placed into EX Tiberius' possession rather than take the pseudo-dragon back with him. Vox Machina make the assumption both are one and the same, and there you have it - best of both worlds. I'm not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind seeing fanfiction where Tiberius stuck around... or they meet the other Tiberius. Maybe I should write some? xD
Tiberius was irrational, and sort of compulsive. Arguably due to his low wisdom. He was oblivious to how he talked down to people, unable to insight how his words and demeanor were degrading or bragging. He also tried to throw around his knowledge without the rights words for the conversation. I mean he even attacked someone's magical wards. We can easily see that he wasnt wise! I think it was played well. Now if we look at Keyleth, who has above stats in all mental stats, but is played like a ditz, you can argue keyleth doesnt seem like an above average extremely wise person. But either way, both (all) characters were great :)
Oh! My name is, Tiberius Kraghammer. that's my favorite, like wtf he was totally zoned out and named his dwarf form after a town? fucking lmfao, episode 1 at 1:48:00
I sometimes find myself wondering since the finale what could have changed in the story had Orin and there for Tibs not parted ways with Critical Role. Would the finale battle have gone differently? Could he have done something to save Vax...I honestly can say.
Lucas VerBeek I think Matt would have increased the difficulty significantly. Same goes for most of their fights after he was gone. I think it would, have been relatively the same outcome, cuz Matt knows exactly what hes doing
Neverwinter27 Which woulda been a smart move... Fighting a pseudo god in the middle of their lair is an awful, stupid fucking idea. Tiberius was the only one in Vox Machina with half a brain. "Lets charge right into the Beholder's lair and sneak attack him!" - A lucky bunch of idiots "How are you going to sneak around something with that many eyes, that already knows we're here, in its own house? I dont want to fight something on it's terms if I can avoid it." - A smart man who was too good for them Tiberius saves the day more often than Kelieth does and Orion was there for barely a quarter of the series. 10/1 Tiberius would have picked up Wish and/or Timestop, and maybe a couple levels in Fighter. The archetype seemed like a "spell slinger" type, would have been nice to see what kind clever combos he might have used. R.I.P Tibs, you were literally too good to live.
@@brosephnoonan223 no, there was nothing wrong with the character, he wasn't too good or too bad for VM, but with the player, constantly taking the spotlight, shitting on NPC's and being obnoxious, i liked him at first, but could you imagine one of the serious moments like Tary talking to his family, i can almost guarantee you that Orion would interject with "Tiberius is flirting with Tary's mom or something. and i get sam does that too, but he does it at the right times, not during emotional, serious moments
@@TheRaptureWillRise Just one extra counter spell from Tibs instead of Scanlan would have allowed Scanlan to use Wish to save his friend. Matt did confirm that if he had used wish correctly when she came to collect, that it would have probably been enough of a pull to prevent him from having to go. And Scanlan only uses his 9th slot when he absolutely had no other choice. But that just shows what COULD or MAYBE happen, right? Maybe Matt forces them to use more Counterspells because he uses more higher level spells and uses magic correctly to decimate his players. Who knows.
I really wish Tiberius could've stayed in the campaign and get past the meta-gaming part that bugged everyone. Outside of meta-gaming he has got to be one of the BEST roleplayers. People might say that there's no such thing as being better at roleplaying but I just feel that Tiberius was. When he spoke I was so engaged with his character.
If you just google his name + Critical Role you'll see a reddit thread. Scroll that reddit thread and you'll see two kickstarter scams he conducted, plus evidence from his abused ex girlfriend. He was a shit stain. Tiberius was a dislikable character, but he had room for growth (as did Orion, but there were probably conversations off-stream they had about the subject) Kickstarter Scams: - One was where he offered to raise money for a mod of one of his twitch streams, but never gave her any of the money www.reddit.com/r/DeFranco/comments/7qvgwb/orion_acaba_a_voice_actor_formerly_of_critical/ There's this thread, and then in here, it outsources to evidence to the person affected. - The other was for his all Dragonborn party that he started to basically be like Critical Role, raised about 3k and no one got their rewards nor did they get refunds (bc of how kickstarter works) There's evidence in the comments of that kickstarter www.kickstarter.com/projects/orionacaba/draconian-knights I can tell you for a 100% fact that anyone who hates Orion Acaba absolutely loved the dynamic Tiberius gave to the party. It's the PLAYER who ruined it all. And you can clearly see when it's Orion getting mad that he cannot be OP instead of Tiberius being frustrated that something did not work out
Days since someone left an unnecessary comment about how much they hated Orion among 20 other comments about the same thing: 0 days Anyways, you don't have to say how much you hated Orion every time he's remotely mentioned, let alone drop it randomly on a video a person animated and put work into just because it featured his character? It's very rude. You can still find the scene funny without thinking Orion was great.
Mathew McCloskey sure, but that’s not what the comment is about. It’s about the character Tiberius and the artist’s work. Leaving comments like that probably doesn’t affect Orion like it’s intended to, but it probably has a big effect on the animator who used Tiberius in the short. That’s not very fair imo.
Meh, I really didn't like the character Tiberius either. He was extremely over powered at such a low level, his rp was boring and cliche, and he made the other characters visibly uncomfortable at times. I don't mean for my comment to "hurt Orion" in particular. I just want to spread the message that he's a disgusting, low life human being who isn't deserving of this artists talent.
Mathew McCloskey a lot of the rp is "Cliché", Grog is an Idiot Barbarian (Although Travis does it wonderfully even though a lot of the time it means he has to sit back and listen to people's sometimes stupid ideas), Vex is a greedy ranger, Vax is a moody stealthy boi, Scanlan is the comedic bard, Keyleath is a clueless druid. Cliché for all. Bad? No. Something can be Cliché and still great
It physically hurts to still see people hate on Orion/Tiberius, and even more so when they don’t know anything about him or his character. Even Matt is sick of how people talk about him. “He was so annoying and tried to steal all the glory” Thats his character. “He was so rude and inconsiderate” He is a Red Dragonborn Prince with a Wisdom of 4. “He is so angry all the time” Drugs and Cancer would do that to a person. “He is such a metagamer” So what? Let him play how he wants to, besides, this was adapted from Pathfinder where Magic users were basically demigods, I wouldn’t blame him for trying to regain that splendor. You insult my favorite Dragonborn, you insult all of Critical Role.
I agree right up until metagaming. No, just, no. Every player abides by a standard. It's not 'playing how one wants to play', it's deliberately giving your actual character an advantage by using out of character information... lemme explain it this way. Say the party splits and they each have a task to do and are FAR AWAY from each other in the game. In the game, there is no way for either group to know what the others are doing or if they're even alive. One player from party B is listening to the DM describe what is happening to party A as a player (not the character). That player cannot use the player knowledge as character knowledge. For example, later on, much further in the campaign of Vox Machina, Taryon gets kidnapped. Matthew Mercer does split narrative where he switches between Sam Riegel and the rest of Vox Machina. The players all know what is happening but their characters don't. Metagaming is the act of doing or saying things that your character DOES NOT KNOW. Your character doesn't know where the kidnapped member is unless they make a perception roll or scry etc. If everyone at the table just meta-gamed, there would be no point in having any skill check rolls whatsoever. Metagaming is the only thing I disagree with here.
Oh, I misunderstood metagaming then. I thought it was purposefully min/maxing your character in order to perform as best as possible in combat and immediately using enemy weakness when your character shouldn't know them. My apologies.
I will say that it is more Orion than the character of Tiberius that often tried to make everything a drum solo (I don't want to call it stealing all the glory). It doesn't deserve that kind of hate though. It's a flaw, but we all have them, as do the other members of Critical Role in different ways. Other players and especially the DM will draw that back a bit, well hopefully so in our games, but with CR they will try to handle that and control of fix it. You can come up with complaints about gaming flaws of most of the players. It's not worth that kind of hate. There are other examples and ways of Metagaming, and that is a good example above. Having played for ages (back to the basic/Expert Boxed sets Moldvay covers) most players metagame to some extent or try. Orion is nowhere near the worst I've seen. No I wouldn't allow it, but I'm just saying he wasn't the worst at what players will attempt to metagame, without trying, or sometimes realizing what they are doing. Matt was pretty good about keeping it under control. Orion was totally different in playstyle. He didn't mesh as well as the other players do together. He was a bit of an outsider in the group, even in the home games you can tell. And that's not a bad thing. It can bring an interesting dynamic. I mean we can tell the difference. I've even been that outsider myself in some groups. I really didn't like how some people acted about when he killed the crone with the krull thing. Yeah she was running away at that moment, but if her spell hadn't failed she would have been sticking around to finish of the group she was hired to kill. He ain't no Paladin. I applauded him. I mean it was pretty brutal but kind of funny. He may have been rude and inconsiderate to a certain extent in some situations, but that was the highborn dragonborn character and he roleplayed it well. As he did Tiberius's love and respect to the rest of his party. Also his "I walk away" scene was terrific.
Kane the Space Wolf Hard to speak for all of the criritcal role community when there are many of us that dont really mind that he is gone. You can like Tibsy all you want, defend him all you want too. But dont speak for anyone but yourself. You can clearly see that not everyone is as fond of him as you are.
