I got a pack of the 1 1/8” diameter cut to try this year. Love the solid one piece design that seemed almost impervious to your steel plate test.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures you wont find a tougher standard one piece broadhead, there might be some really fancy expensive steel broadheads out there or deferentially tempered or really out there really expensive broad heads, but these are the suvs of the broad head world of their choice of carbon steel, I have some of the last 325's to be gotten, they only made that model for a few months or so and went down to 300 due to the long length the tip would often curl when they heat treated them, it was the first I saw with an offset bevel, and till bishop archery came out with their monsters they were the heaviest made that I could find and out of my wicked ridge crossbow they would go through a solid 3 inches of wet wood and put a 5 inch long crack end to end in wood when they would hit due to a single bevel design. as for vpa they are made in a machine shop out of fort wayne, they also make other archery products there or parts for other archery products, as well as other broad heads for other privet labels, I met jeff miller several times, when I would mess up a broadhead they used to replace it no questions asked or I would inquire about new stuff, now though I think if its clear the broadhead was abused they wont replace it but I shot one though a brick twice and completely bent the tip all the way around and it did not snap, jeff was like " nice" like wow how did you do that, it cut an inch and a half off that corner when it hit though they are solid as could be, and I have video on my channel to prove it, they dont make any single bevels of their own, but they have the double bevel all the way up to 300 and the tool steel is no joke they make them out of, not quite as hard as the ashby broadheads but it was said those were tempered to 58 rockwell and had a habit of breaking due to being more brittle from the high hardness, vpa goes to around 55 rockwell I belive.

Just replacing your Broadhead with a 300gr vpa does crazy things. Best thing I’ve done. I preferred the 2 blade for my recurve and the 3 blade for the wife’s crossbow.

Can I ask what it does? I'm looking at going with a heavier set up and a tough fixed blade head. I still love my mechanicals, but there's gonna be a day where ill wish I had a heavy fixed blade incase of bone.

@@bbmopar3834b it increases your Overall mass and more importantly puts that mass up front of the arrow. It’s expressed in FOC. A channel on here called @ranchfairy does a great job explaining it and why it’s so good. I’ve never used mechanicals but I’ve seen my buddies use twizzler arrow and flappy broadheads and they never get pass throughs, they also lose deer.

I have the 125gr 1-1/8 solid heads and love them. I got these because I love bigger cutting diameter heads. I agree 100% about the erratic flight. There’s a lot of surface area with these and it took me some fine tuning to work them out compared to my 1-1/8 ones. Tough as nails though!

The deal with the VPA’s is that they can be sharpened to much sharper than what comes out of the pack.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 года назад
Yep--as most heads can. I always sharpen up heads before I hunt with them. But to test them, I have to be fair and only test "out of the box" sharpness.
@baraksinz
@baraksinz 4 года назад
I also had flight issues with the VPA three blade heads. The two blade heads are much better IMO. They fly like darts and are very durable. Took my first bull elk with one in 2019, and the head was almost sharp enough to use again. Now for a VPA 2-blade in these tests! 😁

This needs to be revisited. All of the new VPA's come with a pyramid tip. The curl you got doesn't happen with the new tip. Furthermore, most guys (at least in the trad community) would remove the stock "needle" point. Structurally, I don't know that there is a tougher 3 blade on the market. Woodsman and Tuffhead would be comparable contenders. As far as accuracy, your comment about it taking 5 shots makes me shake my head a little. Maybe you had a little too much caffeine that day? Or maybe it was another variable. Shooting a blazing 158 fps from my longbow, I get the 175 grain 1-1/4" hitting with field points out to 45 yards. Granted, I don't take shots on game at that range, but accuracy has never been an issue with me. I took a deer at 23 yards last year with the 190 grain glue-on. Blew through it like butter. He dashed 15 yards, stood there and tipped over. A few strokes of the jewel stick and strop and it was back in the quiver. These things are bad medicine for turkeys as well. Anyway, would like to see you do the head justice since the newer models are all machined with the pyramid tip now. Take care.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Understood. I know you revisited the Magnus heads. May be worth getting your hands on one of the bigger VPA's down the road. They make so many models in the 3 blade. The 175-200 grain 1-1/4" are pretty tough to beat IMO. They make a 300 grain 1-1/2" (!!) too. Now that would be a fun one to review.

I just switched from KUDU 125g to VPA 175g but I believe only 1-1/8" cut and much longer of course. Bumped arrow weight from 490 to 590g. Buddy with trad bow shot through shoulder blade of spike elk at 35+ yards with the VPA 3 blade. Was disappointed with just 6" you got in test. My 175g seem to be flying good out to 70, as far as I practice. Interesting you had issues. Mine are also not vented. Like how 3 blade are easy to sharpen. To cut this short, I was disappointed in the penetration and flight characteristics you had.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 года назад
Yeah, I was surprised by the penetration as well. But sometimes the gel can kind of "stick" to heads with greater surface area like this one, holding it back a bit. Tissue doesn't have that problem.

I'm really impressed with my 200 Grain VPA Double Bevel 2 blades. Think I'll try this 3 blade for Turkey hunting this spring after I determine which weight head my Turkey bow prefers. I'll stick with 1 1/8" hoping for better flight though.

Figuring you are a much better shot than I am, your issues at 70 yards concerned me. Wind is blowing 15 mph +/- right now here. 20 and 30 yards was dead on. Went back to 50 and second shot at 70 yards. Both within one inch of center punch. Not sure why you had issues. One of the broadheads I shot was 175g 1 1/4" cut (shorter profile), other head was longer profile 175g 1 1/8" cut. I absolutely do not see the long range issues you had. Guys, don't give up on this head for longer ranges.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Mr Lusk, the heads I'm shooting are 175g, with a bigger profile, more surface area, potenially causing more plainning issues. Not sure I'm following why this 125g head would fly wacky. Your 125 is basically identical in profile to my 175g with 1 1/4" cut. 125 is just fluted to reduce weight.

Since the steel in these heads isn't excessively hard( 60+ Rockwell) and you only went up to 1k, you might have some burr left over. Try running each edge over the corner of a piece of soft wood ( like pine) a few times. That should knock any burr off. Then do a few trailing stokes at 1k and then strop on newspaper or leather( at least 8 strokes per side).

Test media does not simulate hide, muscle, tendons or organs as far as penetration or blood trails go. A well tuned bow/arrow/broadhead are the key to penetration. Shoot more; think less.
@LuskArcheryAdventures

Well nothing can completely simulate an animal...even one animal can be completely different from another animal. My tests provide consistent tests on consistent, uniform mediums, to compare one head to another.
