Major focus should be on decreasing headset weight (300g or less) and getting a larger fov on a standalone. It would increase immersion and the lighter weight allows for longer periods of use. That'd be a big win.

I think the things that'll help VR grow are: 1) Better looking games (they need to look compelling even in a flat trailer) 2) Cheaper or subsidized hardware that is still capable of running good looking games. Platform holders should do contracts for subscription services in exchange for dramatically dropping the price of their hardware. If PSVR 2 cost $349 or $399 when you signed up for 2-3 years of PS+ Premium, it'd sell much better. 3) Public demos so people can actually use the hardware 4) Actual proper VR onboarding software that can show people some really cool shit while guiding them through their first VR experiences in a comfortable way. Something perfect for demoing VR for friends. 5) This is a weird one but stay with me. The resurgence of 3D movies in theaters, or at least one big one like Avatar was. If it ever happens, VR platform holders and/or game developers should make 3D trailers for their headsets/games. It wouldn't be as good as wearing the headset, but at least it would give audiences a sense of the depth and scale VR offers, and how that might look in a game.

Either you or myself are confused on what varifocal is. My understanding is that doesn't relate to fovated rendering at all. Currently Quests have a fixed focal point (the distance your eyes think they are focusing at) at about 1.2 meters (depending on model). So even though the screen is mere inches from your eyes, it seems like the image is really 1.2 meters away. Which is why I (a nearsighted person) need glasses or custom lenses to see in game. It is also a benefit for older people like myself that are starting to need bifocals because their eyes can't focus at more than one distance. I can just use single vision lenses for the headset. Varifocal, simulates the real world where different parts of image will actual achieve a a real focal length as defined by the game. Which means your eyes must constantly change focus, just like the real world. This will probably take even more calculation, not less. It will be more immersive for people with good eyesight since it better simulates the real world. However, it will actually be worse for me, since my eyesight is crap in the real world.

Your last point about Meta wanting a super data-collection tool as their endgoal... This topic is severely under-represented in the VR scene and not nearly talked about enough. Props to you for mentioning it, at least in passing.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 17 дней назад
Yeah, and it's already out there with Meta's ray ban glasses. People should really be talking about it more. It honestly creeps me out. If people want to open up their whole life to Meta by using their products and signing the TOS without reading it, that's their business. But now Meta's putting devices out there that are meant to be used in public with outward facing cameras. Pretty sure nobody consented to Meta spying on them in that fashion. There should be legislation crafted around these devices and how they can/cannot use the data they gather on the people around their user, but politicians in pretty much every country are out of touch and clueless about this stuff.

@@Thezuule1 I understand that, and when it's a matter of another civilian taking photos or videos I don't have a problem. But when these devices are connected to the internet, and the images and videos are passed through facial recognition software to identify everyone in a given image, and that information can be corelated with GPS data and sold on to individual or business who cares to buy it, I think consent should be required or more realistically, legislation should limit how that technology is used by companies. Especially when profit is involved.

I agree with Mateo we need more GAMES and in my opinion, games the FEEL like real full featured games, but with the added tactile interface that most VR only titles have. Most of my BEST VR experiences were flat games with what is essentially a VR mod added either by a modders or the publisher. In most cases the menus as well as the lack of tactile interactivity is what lets them down like in Skyrim VR and Fallout VR. To have a FULL FLEDGED title but with the hands on interactions of H3 or Alyx would be a serious HOME RUN for VR. Just showing some of my Friends the 7DVR mod has made them want to jump into VR, and with used headsets on Ebay making it easier to dip your toes in, a REALLY good game releasing on ALL platforms could make some serious waves. Especially if the game also had a Flat screen Mode so those without a headset can still play with their friend THAT DO have one. Being able to see their friends avatar moving like them has a MAJOR impact, TRUST ME your friends seeing you having a blast doing fake kung fu and tossing enemies about or doing trick shots like John Wick they WILL want to do it too BIG TIME!!!

Many people's opinions are based on their experience with the Quest 2. And well, many, many games ARE held back by the Quest 2, so the complaints are kind of justified. Red Matter 2 is just one of a few exceptions. I also guess many people have not even tried the games in VR and just base their opinions on the flat videos they see on RU-vid.

I would love VR googles to have high enough resolution to replace my desktop monitors. Then I would be able to have monitors any size I want. Then hopefully lots of VR productively apps would come out that you can use too. Also I am really enjoying gaming on my quest 3, can’t wait for the quest 4 or maybe a quest 3 pro. I remember playing Vr games about 30 years ago using a Amiga at the arcade. it’s great to see VR really improving over the years but compared to how much everything else has compared over the past 30 years, VR progress feels really slow.

They should absorb sidequest or at least make it easier to incorporate into the existing space. also, 2 things I would like to see are 1 a home space like in the rift where you can earn interactive stuff like achievements and can access your games console style, but with the change on it being in mixed reality so everything you can place is actually in your home...2 more games or apps for mixed reality imagine a home decorating in your own home or a pressure wash simulator but it's your stuff... They are doing it..just slowly..they've opened the resources to other companies and stretched into other uses like schools. I think where we are really headed is a light headset with everything accessible via cloud with a variant of touch pads on either side of the headset. making it so it's as light and as close to a pair of sunglasses as possible...I think that's where it will take off. proving to a majority of people that it is a necessary tool or an easy-to-operate entertainment device that comes in several styles and colors and is a status symbol..anyone who lived through the mobile phone generation should see VR being the same way

2 of the top things I would need to be able to do things on a Quest that I do today on a PC are higher resolution displays and more comfort. Typing in VR is a big problem, but it has some potential solutions. Using a controller/pointer to select keys is not good. I can already use a link cable or headstrap batteries to extend the time I use it. I suspect I would need higher compute power. I would like a larger FoV, but that is still a "like" instead of a "need".

What I’m trying to say is Quest needs some compute component to is strapped the waist or back of the user it cant get it ever from a mobile SoC chip integrated into the headset.

Hated that app lab being separate, really pleased with this news. Albeit, I may be trading to the PCL so won't have the store available to me. I still plan on getting a q3 again soon as I love it in it's own way! Being able to stream games without a powerful PC yet being able to play the best at the best settings would inflate interest in VR. It's much more accessible then, especially if they can somehow allow mods too. So many more VR users would come flocking in with the lower price point! I also believe a greater FOV (like pimax 8kx) would also help I reckon. Takes away some of the blinkered effect that probably causes some sickness.

We all have different ideas on what will make VR grow. Meta losing focus and concentrating more on AR and MR isn't helping it grow. I feel that appealing to gamers who already spend on gaming is a good direction, but I could be wrong. Not so much the same games aa flat screen but adjacent games like Alyx was. Not GTA 4 5 or 6, but a GTA game in a familiar location with assets that already exist but made for VR. Kind of like games that came out for PSP and the like. You made a good point in a previous video, flat screen games are too grindy for VR.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 17 дней назад
Yeah I was hoping Sony would make more spinoff games like Horizon Call of the Mountain. Even though that game was mid by most accounts, the concept of taking assets from a triple-A flat game and using them to build a made-for-VR game is a great idea. It'd dramatically reduce the budget needed to make a high-end VR game. It's a shame Sony didn't follow through on it (or at least have shown no signs they're following through). Not sure there's any other company that'd do it. Maybe Capcom or Ubisoft someday. I guess Valve could if they ever make another triple-A flat game.

I think meta is currently aiming at basically having a monopoly on standalone VR headsets and OS. They want people who would think about going for something like the vision pro to go for a quest 3. I think it's not so bad for us (well us who are on quest) because then game devs wont have to develop for different hardwares to be able to reach a bigger audience which means we might see more AAA standalone VR games.
@christiansmakingmusic777
@christiansmakingmusic777 13 дней назад
I think you are right about VR needing to broaden. Gaming has driven the innovation that got us to and through PlayStation and into VR, but gaming isn't the only possible use case. Social networking and education, which may seem boring to some, potentially brings a whole different market, one where safely building satisfying social connections and learning and growing together will be the main commodities. The potential for education and simulated technical programs are also intriguing. VR. AR, Mobile, and PC together will likely be important parts of the IOT as time progresses. VR is projected to grow for the foreseeable future at around 3-4% per yer. The growth curve is projected to level off in the coming five years, suggesting current market saturation. Extending the market by both software and hardware innovation will probably be necessary for the overall market to continue growing.

8:01 Thinking on it, VR has public attention at this point. What we need is a massive company to jump into it, with a better brand name then meta and a hold on standalone gaming hardware. I know this sounds crazy, but thinking on it… If the next Nintendo switch is like the pimax portal, with vr capabilities for each game (maybe each mainline game), that’ll be it IMO. Nintendo was one of the first to try vr in the 90s and with how the tech as grown, they easily could do it now. Like, being able to play breath of the wild in vr? I’d buy instantly. We need a company with a strong brand name (which meta unfortunately has one but not in a good way), to incorporate vr into a form factor that makes it more accessible. Going past mixed reality and tying your vr headset into… well, reality, is a great play, and I think it could easily become mainstream in the right hands. I’ve had that thought for a while and figured I’d share, also because Nintendo’s hardware is so perfect for standalone vr. When you play a Nintendo game, you expect quality visuals, but not hyper realistic ones (Totk is a great example), and Nintendo does so well with making a game fresh and unique without focusing too hard on realistic graphics and such. I know they ‘tried’ with the labo vr, but that never gained traction, due to a lack of quality presentation and support.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 17 дней назад
I agree they'd be a good fit, but I don't think it's likely Nintendo will embrace VR that way. If anything I think they'd go for MR, as Myamoto and others at Nintendo have said they don't like how VR isolates you from the world and people around you. But Nintendo VR could be incredible. Aside from their recent games, there's a ton of Wii games which would be perfect for VR remakes. Stuff like Red Steel 2 and Dead Space Extraction would be great in VR. I think it's much more likely that Apple will be the company to do what you're saying. The AVP was way out of most people's budgets, but that's like a first prototype. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they release a headset with a relatively consumer attainable price point in the next 3 years. Then again, Apple does love to GOUGE people on hardware prices. And who knows how much they'd embrace the gaming side of it. Not traditionally their forte, but they've been pushing more in that direction.

@@GreyMatterShades the fact you took the time to type out a really well-formatted and smart response is appreciated man! Honestly yeah, that’s true! When Apple does make their products more consumer-friendly in terms of vr, the sky’s the limit! But the thing is that Apple doesn’t have a strong VR app base, from what I’ve seen… the Apple ecosystem both suffers and benefits from from its more closed-off and selective nature I guess, but yeah, I can see what you mean. As for Wii games, absolutely. Mario galaxy and Skyward sword? Two beautiful games visually with beautiful mechanics and a lasting impression (the latter is debatable but I love Skyward Sword) that would transfer perfectly to vr… I do hope they jump into it soon, absolutely. Even with their older games (ocarina of time, both n64 and 3d). In vrchat there’s a port of Ocarina of time’s map with some mechanics in progress, using the 3d assets, and stepping into that world was a whole new experience. It’d be cool to see a ‘vr classics’ bundle or something maybe, even if they don’t fully jump into it. Punch out Wii? Heck yeah. Majoras mask? Yes please 😭

@@YeeHawRev I appreciate your appreciation! 🍻 Your comment warranted such a response. And too many times on RU-vid I'll take some time to post a response and the person just says "yup" or "ur wrong" 😑 But anyway... I can't believe it's taken us this long to state the obvious. Metroid effing PRIME! It would be PERFECT for VR. And yes, they've got a treasure trove of older games that would be cool to experience in VR. Even some of the GameCube lineup would be great. And more than that, I'd love to see what new games they could come up with. Nintendo has always been great at showing off their hardware. In the Wii era they used motion controls arguably better than anyone. If any company could really thoroughly nail VR interaction, I think it would be Nintendo. But I still don't think its gonna happen any time soon 😢 As for Apple, the "walled garden" approach of their ecosystem could hinder them, but they've been pretty open with the iPhone. I think by the time their headsets are targeting mainstream audiences, they'd likely take a similar approach. My big concern is they don't have much experience with first-party game development. Who knows though. 5 years ago if you'd asked me if Apple could make a bunch of award winning TV shows I'd say no way, and look where we are now. Apple has started dabbling in games with Apple Arcade. If they put their mind (and money) to VR content, they could probably make something great. I'm just concerned that they're more interested in AR/MR and "spatial computing."
@YeeHawRev

@@GreyMatterShades same to you 😭, main reason is because you shared a slightly differing opinion respectfully, which like you said most people don’t! Metroid prime would be a system seller tbh, it has so much polish! On that topic, I do have my quest 3 and recently tried out questcraft, which made me realize how first party titles with genuine polish can be ported to standalone hardware and be a genuine reason to pick it up. I never liked Minecraft as a child but love it now thanks to this system. As for Apple, honestly yeah! There definitely is opportunity for them to grow and open up a bit more, and they have shown they can do that in a very smart way. MrWhoseTheBoss did a video sort of explaining how smart apple’s marketing and growth tactics are for the longevity of the company, so I wouldn’t put it past them to take their time and begin to release incredible vr games. At the end of the day, I am the best case customer for VR/AR. I make music, 3d model, and do school, where having AR is great, and also love vr and vr gaming and the immersion it brings. I think in tandem, focusing on more then just special computing or ‘the metaverse’ , focusing on integrating vr into a daily piece of equipment that compliments or enhances existing tech is the way to go!

I think quest 4 is basically what everyone has been asking for. With increased power and foveated rendering I’m sure the visuals will be akin to 30 FPS Xbox 360/PS3 games and with art style like Bioshock for example despite being 2 to almost 3 console generations old it’s enough that you start entering the territory of diminishing returns and the visuals no longer being distractingly bad for your average player. Stuff like better MR, lighter weight, and FOV will only take it to the next level. This generation of consoles has been extremely disappointing for many gamers. Meta has a great opportunity to capitalize on gamers yearning for more with quest 4.

Anything that makes VR bigger destoys the magic of it in the long run! It happens to TV, Cinema PC or console gaming. Compare modern movies to the one of the nouvelle vague age. I wonder why AAA games suck nowadays. don´t ask for the devil. Right now wee are in a superb position as VR customers. We got the pimax crystal light, superb vr sims and uevr extactor. The only thing we need is someone to invent propper vr locomotion (not this stupid glinding stuff we see now) and hopefully nothing that makes vr bigger, because bigger=a product for the masses=dumbed down product=boring!

Quest has gotten us where we are and will get us where we end up with VR in ,this generation at least . No thanks to the people in VR that have spent years crapping on it making it harder to stick . Good thing meta never was going to or will give up on this no matter what happens . If you don’t like the quest games … fine … just cover pcvr stuff and try to help grow things there . @@repeahlfors9951 yup spent years crapping on quest and meta ruining VR . I get frustrated with it because it all comes from a place of personal opinion and refuse to acknowledge the reality of the “ state of VR “ . VR kind of has to be forced because overall humanity is so stubborn and ignorant force feeding and over saturation is the ONLY thing that “ works “ . Need to be welcoming to all new comers to VR and prolly best not to crap all over the device they just bought as the cheapest and most popular way into VR . He is by far not the only one . Most think they know “ what VR needs “ …. It’s nice to think about what we want , but has no relevance to what is actually happening and separating a wishlist and reality shouldn’t be that hard lol . There are plenty of reasons things are the way they are but flat out the biggest issue to get VR across the line is spending . Meta for all of its faults and granted poor judgment in some things does NOT negate that no one else decided to spend through the growth of VR regardless of what happens . That’s like the “ biggest” thing in VR by far because without it we don’t get here in our lifetimes , without we wouldn’t get to see what comes next in our lifetimes for certain . Phrase struck a cord because of all the negative crap that still gets spouted all the time just parroting what they here from a multitude of creators . Backtracking NOW after the quest 3 proves them all wrong is good , but still frustrating lol . The quest games they still complain about are not meant for vets , but they still complain about games made for noobs like it is not a needed thing for the constant flow of new comers . Could just focus on what they like if that is too hard to understand … but nope , they still pretend like everything is supposed to be made for vets … sooo not fully supporting when leaving clear and good reasons for a lot of things meta does .

@GhostShot-mk9tq Thanks for the long and detailed answer! I agree with you. I personally want expensive high-quality PC VR devices and games, but at the same time, I do realise that it's not the right way for VR to grow and to get more mainstream. I have a lot of friends who've bought Quest 2 now because the price is so low, and all of them are very happy with the device. All of them are them are going to upgrade to a better device at some point (most to Quest 3), but a cheap, relatively low quality VR headset is what got them into VR in the first place.

@@repeahlfors9951 pcvr kind of skewed peoples idea of where we “ should “ be . There are plenty of great pcvr games but the fact remains it is expensive so buying into it directly was never going to grow VR fast enough on its own . The games they made that really throw people of were made to make buying directly into pcvr worth it . Half life Alex and stuff are great games they were also very expensive and took awhile too make . Cheaper was and is needed , and with hybrid capability for pcvr a lot go to pcvr after buying in to quest . Should make the quest a great thing to pcvr as it is the main thing growing pcvr as we go . Never understood the shortsightedness of it all . There are people being annoyed with the deal to sell quest in China like it isn’t important …. over a billion people in China , some even like tech I think lol . The potential sales could dramatically ramp the speed of progress up . There a lot of things happening in VR , but constantly crapping on the multibillion dollar golden goose making all this happen on the level it is seems counterproductive to growth. I get being impatient and I get why , but VR already has enough negativity surrounding it from the outside without the people that are supposed to like VR complaining about the most popular headset and games .
