I got the car as a project car and I was told the headlights never worked straight out. They used a paper clip somehow to make them work. I do not think it’s the switch for they are not problems starting the bug. They are just a few ticks such as the ones I have already mentioned and then the heat and AC that don’t work. I have accomplished a lot with this vehicle since I have been given it when it’s sat almost 4 years and I am driving it around. 😊. Just these few last things are driving me crazy. 😅
The ignition switch does more than just start the car. Look at a wiring diagram. I can't help you if you don't take my suggestions serious. All you need is a test light & a wiring diagram to diagnose electrical issues. Always start at the ignition switch to make sure that power comes out of it... going to all the different circuits (load reduction relay circuit for example).
Thanks for reconfirming this task if you don't me me saying it's advisable to put the. Airbag the otherway up as if it. Goes off it won't fire it through the roof
My New Beetle has an "Air Bag", I'm not sure why yours doesn't or how you dealt with that. But I've seen them go off and it's a potential violent action to the face.
It's a very good video When removing the plastic shield around the steering column and after you pull off the steeing wheel there are some screws that are sunk deep in the plastic and steering column and the heads are not visible Is that a Torx driver or a philips head ? Thanks !
My 01 Beetle the turn signals will blink once then stop, also the hazards will not work either is this something else? Will a bad turn signal switch also affect the hazard lights? Sorry if this is a stupid question. But great video.
+72Disco1998 It is your hazard switch module, the actual module with the hazard button under the climate control knobs and next to the heated seat switchs if you have them.
+72Disco1998 Sorry... for some reason I did not get a notice about your question 6 months ago. I only now got a notification after Donald Springstead replied. The Hazard lights should work independent of the turn signal switch... if the hazard lights also do not work, check the fuses: #2 (10A) & #39 (15A) if the fuses are OK, replace the hazard light switch (flasher / signal relay is part of the hazard light switch).
I am having trouble getting my head lights to work however, my bright light flash works. I also do not have blinkers or wipers and I went through all of my fuses all are good. Replaced the headlight bulbs, the only thing I have not done was check the relay’s. I have the schematic but for me I find it hard to read. I am not even sure they are all there and not sure they are the right amp. Can you help please. I have an 2000 New Beetle. (this is my first video of yours it was very helpful).
If the lights, wipers etc worked before, then all the relays are probably in place / where they should be. The "load reduction" relay feeds power to several components... headlights, wipers, blower motor to name a few. The problem could be the load reduction relay or the ignition switch. Relay 3 in the bottom row. www.newbeetle.org/attachments/edit_2012-07-02_1-jpg.95446/ Check if the relay turns on then the key is on. You can remove the relay and bridge pins 30 & 87 to see if things start working again.
How long does that tool need to be to reach the springs that hold the airbag in place on the steering wheel? I got what were meant to be proper tools and I'm sure they are nowhere near the spring.
Steering wheel foam is close to spring. Move the foam (with screwdriver) to get a spring. If you can't open a door because a package is in front of the door... you move the package. There are 2 access holes on the steering wheel... springs are behind those holes... you are working on the steering wheel... not me. I can't help you find the springs.
@@EXOVCDS there’s a better video that’s harder to find than yours. Yours left me confused and wasn’t getting anything apart. I watched this other video and steering wheel about popped off on its own just from watching the vid, I just had to assist it. So you can help with my wheel, you just need to elaborate. This is coming from me who never removed a VW wheel before this, and for whatever reason it came right off after watching someone else explain it.
@Daileyandrew I totally understand... I record while I work / am at work... so I can't elaborate on every little detail. The point still is, that the clip is accessed through the access hole. The clip is in the same place no matter which video you watch. As I said, steering wheel foam can obstruct the clip / make it less visible. Screwdriver is able to press through / past the foam to get to clip. Don't get me wrong... I've struggled with some myself! It just makes more sense to ask questions... so that at least get a chance to help. 90% of automotive youtube channels don't get replies from the channel creator. I reply to all messages (some have gone unanswered because I never received a notification). A service manual is always a good investment... that can also answer a lot.
If I was happy to work upside down and with the wheel in the way .would it still be possible to access to remove complete switch unit for both sides ? Mines just been vandalised ? W.t.f. What for ? They took the levers ?... Answer would be super appreciated .
No worries ,don't ask don't get ! It is very kind of you to respond ,looks like I'm going to be seeing a lot more of your video then ,even if it's in Slo !o with loads n loads of pauses, scares the wot sits out of me ,hopefully the inspiration you've given ,won't cause me a melt down or worse another bloody heart attack,Bless for doing what you do.Appreciated.
Thanks for watching! If a video ever needs explaining (due to being too dark or too noisy) just let me know and I'll help as soon as I can. If you need service info, my contact info is in the fkh161 link in the description.
Good day . Please iam not able to detach airbag... two mechanic tried it i also but without any luck. I got nerves like hulk and i need to detach that stupid airbag somehow. Please whats the number of that tool which you are using for detach ??? Thank you !!!
Even with the tool... the harder you try to release the airbag, the more of a fight you will have. Use gentle pressure. vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?itemid=9920115
Could just be that the steering angle sensor position needs to be relearned. Drive the car and turn the steering wheel 40 degrees left, then 40 degrees right and then hold it straight as you go straight. The relearn usually happens by the time I part the car.
The headlights , turn signals and wind shield wipers all stopped working after some smoke came out of my steering wheel ! Any help with what it may be ? Thank you !!!!
How do you remove the trim plate under the dash area, to get to the relays... My horn has stopped working... changed fuse out... still no horn.... was moving on to relay. Any other suggestions I have a 2001 NB 1.8t
Here's the relay layout: fkh161.ca/VW/A4/VWA4BeetleRelaysFuses.pdf Removing the plastic pedal cluster trim is usually all that is needed to get at the relay box to the left the pedal cluster.
+Gone with Rob I'm heading out for the afternoon... If you need other info, let me know and I'll get it to you once I'm back home. Thanks for following!
vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?itemId=9920115 You can use a bent flathead screwdriver as well.... that's basically what the tool is. The black handled tool is a sharp cutting tool. It cuts the foam in the steering wheel, so that the screwdriver tool has easier access.
I assume it's automatic, because a standard transmission only has 1 sensor. The sensor for the speedometer is located on top of the differential (in both standard & automatic transmissions). Watch this video.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w27c3euMsiw.html either a sensor problem or ring problem. IF your transmission is a 01M transmission. The more info I have the better I can guess.
+Thomas EXOVCDS It fixed it. Thanks. But removing the airbug was so hard. I had to cut the rubber and press the spring from the other side. Also I broke my airbag connector when I pulled it out. And I didn't notice the bottom screw of the plastic cover so I broke the plastic there.
+Thomas EXOVCDS +Thomas EXOVCDS Do you think it's dangerous if I solder back the inductor that got broken inside the airbag connector? the windings also got distorted, I may not have the same number of windings.
ronenfe I would advise against trying to repair it. Even if it "looks good" after the repair, it could still cause a failure to deploy during an accident. If during an investigation it is determined that wiring was tampered with (even if it was meant to be a fix / repair), the insurance company might decline an insurance claim. Sourcing parts from a wrecking yard, would be your best & cheapest repair option.
You’re moving your head too much. What is the easiest way to pull the steering wheel? You made it look so easy but I work on it 2 days and still never pulled it.
If you listen to what i said at 1:25 and have a bit of patience... you will eventually release the retaining clip. You should feel a spring sensation when the screwdriver pushes against the retainer. If you don't feel it, then you're not pushing against the retainer. It should not need much force.... the harder you try, the less luck you'll have. Been there, done that myself.
Hey Thomas, liking your videos, have seen a lot of them already ;) However I got a question for you :) In my Seat Leon 1.8T 2004 I notice three things, maybe they are related, idk. 1 - Every now and then, my cruise control "lower speed" button cancels the CC completely. no DTCs apparent and CC works perfectly besides that. 2 - When using windshield washer, my rear washer squirts a bit too and vice versa. 3 - Every now and then, the rain sensor has a big delay when it starts to rain again, when the switch was still turned on. I have to toggle the rain sensor switch off and on, to get it to work. Furthermore the various interval speed settings (the little knob on top of the switch) for the windshield wiper do not appear to have any effect, the rain sensor just "overwrites" it I think, is this normal?, because i thought rain sensor was little knob position one, and the others were interval? I suspect the switches are worn inside so that they make false contact or something, or maybe some open wires in the hinge of the switch. Would this also effect the behavior of the rain sensor you think? By the look of things It's possible to take the switches apart, or is this not advisable? Thanks in advance, Lars
Yes, could very well be the switches... dirt in the switches. You can try to clean them after removing them from the steering column. Disassemble as far as you can and then use electronics parts cleaner to wash them out... use an air can or similar to blow them dry. Do a full system scan if you can... to see if there are any fault codes (in any of the control modules) that might help. Using a wiring diagram to check all the circuits would help as well. I have not run into similar issues with VW's, but I have seen dirt collect in the switches and that can cause the signals to behave weird... so it's not too much to think that it could affect the wipers / sprayers & cruise control as well.
Hey Thomas, thanks for the quick reply! I have opened up both switches but there was little dust to be found. all I noticed were the contacts from the cruise control button to be worn down a bit. At the hinges was some dirt collection so I cleaned those as much as I could. used contact spray. I will see how this affects the behavior. There were no fault codes at all so no help from that. Will keep you updated once I figure it out.

It's one of my old videos... not very good I know. The video has annotations with information (you need to have annotations turned on to see them). If you have questions, leave a comment.
