VW bus engine fire...what happened? Will it happen again?

Glad there wasn’t much damage, adding the camera back there is a good idea. Especially since you have a blazecut back there as well. Definitely odd that the intake boots split so soon. I do wonder if you have proper preheat on the intake since fuel shouldn’t be puddling up in the intake like that 🤔 Great to see you again!!

welcome back, glad it was not a melt down, think they take power off the reverse lights to turn on the camera but hooking to the coil would do the same thing powering only when running, stinkin china intake boots, l swear ive had better luck with 50 year old german stuff then anything made today,

Marci, when the fuel hoses are dry they weep so maybe there was a leak at the filter. Just replace the hose as a precaution. I'm glad therewas minimal damage.

Hi Marci: Yes, it has been a "long dry spell"! Pondering the fire~fuel leak issue makes me wonder why so much raw fuel is getting past the carburetor in the first place for it to leak from the manifold boot.

A someone who has also had an engine fire in a type 2 I feel your pain. I was able to get it out quickly but lost a bit more wiring than you did. I also lost the electronic ignition! As VWJAWBREAKER pointed out I too am concerned that you had enough raw fuel to pool and drip out that one cracked boot. Imagine more on the other side. I would look for an issue with that carb and definitely check to see if your heat-risers are actually working. Haptic Garage goes over that issue in great detail!! Welcome back, can't wait for Pickle to hit the show circuit!

I've seen a couple of bus fires years ago. Both appeared to have been caused by the old push on fuel hose .the hoses would fall off and next there is fire being fed by the engine itself until the engine stops. By then everything else was burning. then the crank case and trans housing was burning . Nowadays i am kept busy changing old style rubber hoses for E type fuel resistant hose. Even on my own car I have had the rubber hose dissolve while driving,leaving me stranded. In the meantime I have working on a Mercedes where the fuel hoses burst and the engine was covered fuel which caught alight. It wasn't the fire so much which caused a lot of damage but the foam stuff from a fire extinguisher which has corroded every single piece of metal in the engine bay. Even the front suspension bolts are rusting as I write. Talking with a heli pilot mate of mine,he says that if an aircraft has that stuff used on it,they write it off,never to flown or even parted out.

Yea that fuel leak was from the float overflowing into the intake boot. You should be able to get a rebuild kit for that carb......Webber progressive. I have been running those for 35 years. kits are available.

Very cool video and I am glad you're back. Gas leaks are scary. Especially when the electrical system, fuel tank and exhaust are in the same proximity. Didn't you install an extinguisher in an engine compartment?? Anyway, welcome back!👍👍

G'day, Great video. I think the camera in the engine compartment is awesome. But if i could incorporate somehow a temperature readout on the screen that would be double awesome. How about using a heat sensor in the engine bay. When it gets to "flame hot" a buzzer sounds in the cab. Then you can fit it and forget it. This way you will have to keep an eye on the screen.

I was wondering what happened to you! As far as the fire, I was curious how you discovered and extinguished the flames so quickly? Great job cos’ very little damage was done and…. It looks like you have a Blaze Cut installed in the engine compartment. At least that is what I thought I saw. Curious if that is what I think it is.

I think your stereo hole cover could use an artistic plasma cut panel!

Are those Empi manifold boots? I've seen lots of people talking about those leaking pretty quickly after new.

You want to check for grounding thru the accelerator cable, that cause fire

could that be a loose Fuel connection to the carb or the carb float is sticking

are those boots on the intake manifold? so they can crack and suck air too

Great trouble shooting effort. Where did you buy intake boots. Maybe try Wolfsburg West. Most of their stuff is good quality.

I'm happy to see that you are "officially" back now. Of course I was a bit worried because it was such a long time of "junebug abstinence". It's kind of funny, that mankind already flew to the moon more than 50 years ago but even in 2023 it seems not possible to have decent interweb connections. And this although nearly every company/insurance/discounter etc.p.p. went or wants to go to paperless communication = everything only via email. Actually all that isn't funny, it's pretty annoying and a pity/shame. 2) I'm definitely not against new things but they should at least work well and be good for our planet/ mankind. For instance inexpensive LED lights are a really great invention, inexpensive tiny digital cameras also (as you experienced too). I wonder if it isn't a bit distracting to have a constant view on the engine while driving the car in traffic? But, as you mentioned: This contraption already worked well for you for several months. 3) 👍👌👏 Congrats for being able to find the cause for the fire respectively problem in the engine bay. This is often even more important than solving it. Additionally it's even often more difficult than repairing the actual problem. By the way: Is your "pointless" ignition toast or could it be saved! 4) If I remember correctly, you said that you had a job where free WLAN was offered. Please kindly allow me to ask: Is this job no longer existing respectively do you have a different job now (respectively do you work for another company)?
