Calling all hot hatch fans - it’s the one you’ve been waiting for!
All new Volkswagen Golf R vs BMW M135i vs Audi S3 vs Mercedes-AMG A35! That’s right, we’re putting the new Golf R up against its key rivals to see who is the true hot hatch king of 2021.
When it comes to power output, it’s fair to say they’re all relatively similar. For example - the Golf R can put down the most power (320hp) while the BMW and Mercedes put down the least (306hp). But when it comes to torque, the BMW is out in front with 450Nm, while the AMG A35 & S3 come in last with 400Nm.
So there’s a few slight differences, but ultimately, these cars are all pretty evenly matched. And that’s not all… They’re all four-wheel-drive, and they’ve all got launch control!

Can confirm. The scary thing is the MBQ engine platform responds utterly insane to engine mods. My GTI with a tune and down pipe ran a 12.4@119. Which is like Challenger Scat Pack/Mustang GT territory with basically $1,000 in mods.

Yeah correct, but people do care about the pollution norms and noise control in case of vehicle too. So they need to think twice before they exiled it from the car industry, otherwise it will become a "DISRESPECT" for not having a sold limiter for a car that revs up to a certain standstill.

The idea with those limiters, is that during a standing launch it holds the revs where the torque peaks on a turbo engine, the red line isnt where the power is, infact power and torque begins to drop near the redline, its also alot more gentle on the clutch and transmission when launching a 4wd vehicle, this is why differential tech with fancy clutches and torque vectoring etc is moving fast in 4wd vehicles as it protects the clutch and transmission from shock load, so these days with these modern diffs the car is less likely to break if you let clutch up at redline and the lower rpm limiters arent needed as much, its why you rarely hear of driveshafts snapping anymore on modern performance 4wd cars when it used to be common.

@@Imbalanxd Because the numbers do not show real-world performance. Like, BMW shows great 0-60 numbers but they have a useless launch system so you can almost never hit factory numbers. What about gas-response? Downshift response? Typical audi's takes years to downshift for instance! Also, most Audi's are FASTER than their claimed 0-60 numbers. Real world testing! That's why.

The problem with VW's Golf is that the new model in first year always comes ahead of the others and then with the other manufacturers developing their cars the Golf just gets behind for couple of years until the new model comes out. Just like Mk7 when it first came out it was the best among hothatches but then there was no improvement and it became the slowest of them.

Will be interesting to see if the VW Group allows the Cupra to equal the R-cars performance now that Cupra is trying to be a standalone brand? Got a new shape S3, cook exhaust up till popping (about hour with valves open), put it in S gear change, dynamic mode, warm tyres, traction off sport mode. I've had some punching above my weight, red light, open dual carriage way races against Ms, AMGs, GTs, Rs, etc and won all on that stretch.

@@unmaskingfools8152 Based on that 1/4 mile time and my RS3 when it was stock its really close. I ran 12.1 some RS3 are 11.8 depends on weather. So the point is that the R is making probably 380hp. It would be a good test.

@@pacoflyer - It is possible is has more power than claimed but it is also how it is that power it is handled. Good example is Porsche Turbo S (650HP) beating cars with much more HP power.

It's A35 not A45s, and you know what, the A35 sucks. A35 and A45s has day and night difference in performance, that it's even more different than your expectation for the difference gap between an A35 and A45s.

If that reading in bar is boost(I'm pretty sure it is) then the golf has more power than stated/has an over boost function. My ea888 makes 400 @1.7 bar.

That would be about right for the Golf R 0 to 60. You need to factor in your colder climate hence quicker times. Mine sits on 370hp and manages that but in our current 23c. There for I would expect it to be quicker still if it was colder. Either way. Quick enough and equal to the 2019 RS3

Interesting, the golf R is running 2.5 bar in certain gears, that's similar to the A45S... I'm assuming VW have started the figures as at the wheels possibly, not crank/flywheel. That coupled with the usual 10-15bhp on top of official figures I'd say it must be in the region of 370-380 bhp. I'm more surprised with the S3 not being closer to the golf, I thought they used the same engine and where pretty much mechanically the same, or similar atleast.

Yup, my A1 with the twincharged 1.4 litre is advertised to have 185bhp. I dyno‘d it when the car had 150k km on the odo and it came in at 197 😂

One thing people don’t notice on the new Golf R is how low its drag coefficient is. Just looking at the front area and aerodynamics alone, i can tell that it cuts through the air so effortlessly, almost like an electric car with minimum wind drag.

Suggestion: can you add the conversion in KM/h / KM/100L / Kilograms, etc etc on the screen when using feathers/pint etc? We love watching you over the channel, but it's really annoying to have to recalculate the miles/gallon, 0-62m/h etc...
