This was a fun video to make. I learned a lot. I hope you find a few nuggets that will help your ride. Actual VW ignition sparks fly at aprox 8:50
I seem to have had some spark timing issues with my latest engine build and so I got out the tools and books to see what was going on. I set up my own test bench with a distributor and several different coils. I use a variety of used spark plugs and spark plug wires so we can observe the actual spark happening. It's always the same story with a VW engine. The factory did a great job on building a reliable long lasting engine but some of us are just never satisfied. We want more! We want it Fast and we want it to Last. But above all that " DON'T LET THE SMOKE OUT" HEHEHE

I installed the Pertronix Ignitor III Billet Distributor package deal you were talking about from Kaddue Shack 2 months ago and I love it! It's pretty easy to set up, runs SMOOTH, looks great (billet aluminum shaft/base and your choice of a black or grey cap). The package deal comes with of course the distributor, your choice of black or chrome flame thrower coil and special spark plug wires( your choice, red, blue, black and I think yellow) they say you have to use, and yes the kit comes with the spark plug end caps incase you no longer have yours. I also went up a main jet size to a 130 ( on my pic34 stock carb) and a high flow air cleaner and feel a bit more power, DEFINITELY smoother and now no more points to mess with! Edit: one more thing I forgot to mention. There may not be a color option when picking the package deal on line BUT if you call them and tell them what plug wire colors you want, black or grey distributor cap and black or chrome coil, they will send what you request.

Hi Greg, well done. Another distributor that I like that is not that popular in VWland is from "123Ignition". It is based on a Bosch distributor but with some nice electronics. The igniter is electronic of course. The advance curves are electronic with a selector switch for up to 16 (ish) curves for different engines and states of tune. The vacuum advance is also electronic adding onto the 'mechanical' advance curve if you wish to use it. No more spark scatter. If you leave the ignition on but do not start the engine, it will shut down the igniter after 60 seconds or so so you cannot fry a coil. I have had one in a supercharged MG Midget for years and its never missed a beat. They also have fully programmable versions though I haven't played with those yet. The other day we were talking about the 'fun' of replacing sway bar bushes.....another very frustrating job I have discovered is fitting new heater tubes between the heat exchangers and the body of the vehicle. The repro versions of the convoluted plastic tubes are so stiff you cannot flex them into position...I think I invented some new expletives doing that job. Thanks for the video and have a great weekend. Cheers Mick.

Hey you might want to do what I am doing. Change it up to the Magnaspark by CB...they are about the same price or just a bit more than the petronics. But electronic ignition. Much higher voltage. you can run .40 gap. nice fat spark. great for the newest fuels. The whole setup with wires coil and dist is $200. then your totally updated. I want to do my performance engines first. Guys say they feel immediate performance and gas mileage. I totally believe them. I am old school like you been running 009 for years but times are changing.

I too, fitted the Pertronix instead of the CB Points. What a huge difference to the starting and performance of the engine! I would never return to CB Points, and setting the gap. There is no maintenance to the Distributor after this. But please be aware that the Hall-Effect transistorised system is polarity-sensitive. If you fail to connect correctly, you will see the magic smoke, and the whole system will be destroyed in 2 seconds!! Connect it all correctly, you will get many years of service. No more misfires, and the Ignition Timing remains more accurate after this change. I would recommend this.

We changed from using Flamethrower 1 to the SVDA flamethrower 3 (stock style body) dissy. I like the stock style body because the Aluminium cast body is a lower grade aluminium than that of the big bodied (polished) Flamethrower 3. The high quality polished aluminium dissy body is actually a bad thing (specially when it houses electronics). This is because the high grade polished aluminium conducts heat from the crank case really well and therefore gets the electronic ignition inside hot and I've actually had a situation where the dissy body got so hot it caused the electronic ignition to cross fire on a warm day or long run. It got so hot that the 1st time I discovered this I burnt blisters on the tips of my figures from when I went to feel how hot the dissy was (this is my experience). Eventually I worked out this polished dissy body was the route of my crossfire when the motor got warmer than usual so I stay with the non polished body distributors now days.

Hi Ezgz, what spark plugs and gap you recommend when running msd 6Al box, blaster 2 coil and msd dizzy? Thanks in advance
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ Год назад
What should I gap the spark plugs to? Spark plug gap is somewhat subjective. Every engine responds differently to spark plug settings. We recommend that the gap be increased a maximum of .007" over the factory specification. This should not create any issue with service interval's or plug life, yet will enable you to take advantage of the added potential of the ignition system. It's important to read the plugs occasionally to insure that your changes do not adversely affect the engine performance. My VW engines seem to run best with Autolight Spark plugs. Your results may differ

Alright, did some digging on my MG kit car. I took possession of it with no spark. It came with a Bosch blue coil, readings of 4.3 ohms, and 9130 ohms. I have a brand new replacement coil, almost exactly the same readings: 4.2 ohms, and 9140 ohms. I have 12.35 volts at the coil, I have continuity through the condenser lead the whole way to ground, which is broken when the points open. I have continuity through the distributor center wire. I still have no spark. Just this morning, I tested the rotor to see if it had continuity. It does, but I can't get any reading unless I put the meter into the 20k ohm range. A reading of 4.80 in that range setting would be 4800 ohms, no? Could the rotor be my no spark culprit? I am out of ideas to try at this point. Both coils make nice spark doing a similar test to yours(positive battery to positive coil, negative battery to spark plug, center of coil to spark plug, and negative on coil grounds out the spark plug jumper to produce spark). Can't say I've had this much trouble with anything ignition related. Installed in the car, with either coil, and either condenser I have, in any combination, I have no spark. Thanks again
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 11 месяцев назад
Sometimes electric problems drive me crazy. I then have t resort to replacing parts. Run a separate wire to hot side of coil from battery and ground wire to dizzy. Spark should occur when points are opening. Rotors do come with resistance. Lucas electrical has always been a nightmare.
@HedgehogOutdoors
@HedgehogOutdoors 11 месяцев назад
@@TheEZGZ I ended up finding the issue, the distributor cap. Even though it had continuity through the cap, I could not get any power to the outside of the distributor cap. The engine runs now, just have to deal with some probate court nonsense to appease the DMV to register it

Very nice video. Learned a lot. I been trying to get a 2.3 performance engine running. With two 44idf Weber. Petronix ignition. What would be your basic ignition setting? The engine just doesn’t Wanne start. Webers complete cleaned and overhauled. Mixture screw 2.5 turns out. How would you start troubleshooting? I checked the spark. I swapped the coil plus destributer but nothing helped. Thanks again for so good content
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 2 года назад
It should want to at least start at 8 to 10 degrees before TDC. Stock out of the box 44IDF webers are way to big for that size engine unless your all out racing. Low and mid range RPM won't be smooth. IDF Carburetors Low Speed Circuit Tuning It is most important to verify all linkage and levers are installed without binding and the linkage opens to full throttle and is allowed to close to the Idle Speed Screw. This is the number one and two reasons for tuning errors, improper linkage installations and over tightened linkage nut, causing binding in the linkage assembly. The Individual Runner carbs, IDF, have individual Idle jets and mixture screws for each barrel. They also have an additional air bleed screws and lock nuts. This is not used for idle adjustment or idle quality. The settings for these screws should be closed. Standard IDF Settings: Speed screw ¼ to ½ turn in after contact with lever maximum. Mixture Screw 1 turn out from lightly seated. “Lean Best Idle” Procedures After confirming the linkage allows the throttle lever to seat against the Idle Speed Screw. Back off the Idle Speed Screw, then turn the screw in until it contacts the throttle lever and turn it in ½ turn. Turn in the Mixture Screw in until it “LIGHTLY” seats, then back it out 1 full turn. Loosen the 8mm wrench size nuts on the “air bleed” screws, turn in the air screws until it seats then tighten the nut. a. Start the engine, it will run slow and like a tractor. As long as it will stay running, the idle speed is not important at this point. b. First, turn in the mixture screw until the engine runs worse, then back out the screw ¼ turn at a time. The engine should start to smooth out. Continue to back the screw out ¼ turn at a time until the screw does nothing or runs worse. Then turn it back in to the point where it ran best. You want to tune the engine by sound. Adjust each mixture screw to the best, fastest and smoothest running point. Do this procedure with each mixture screw. c. Now you may adjust the Idle Speed Screw. It should be sensitive and only require ¼ turn in or out to achieve the idle speed you like. d. These carbs are commonly used in pairs, this makes the synchronization important, be sure to bring the high flowing carb down to the low flow carb. Then bring them both up to “proper” Idle speed. The Idle Speed Screws are not opened more than ½ turn in. e. After synchronizing multiple carbs, reconfirm steps b. c. & d. “Simple Rules for Calibration” If your mixture screw is out more than one turn like 11/2 turns then your idle jet is too lean, go up one half size on the Idle jet. If you mixture screw is not out one full turn, something like only 1/2 turn out from seated then your Idle jet is too rich, go down one half size on the idle jet. This is all based on the important fact that your speed screws are not open more than ½ turn if they are then that is also an indication that you have a lean Idle circuit. You are cheating by opening the throttle plates and exposing additional progression holes in the transition. Pump By-pass Valve: The pump by-pass valve is designed to allow fuel into the pump circuit and when depressed, by-pass a percentage (hole on the side of the valve) of the fuel delivered to the accelerator pump nozzle/jets. We have included the zero by-pass valve in our jet kit. This will deliver all of the available fuel to the engine and not by-pass fuel back to the fuel bowl. This will increase the duration and volume of the pump shot with the original pump jets. To decrease the duration and increase the fuel volume we have included in our jet kit the larger 55 pump nozzle/jets. This is for maximum fuel delivery from the accelerator pump circuit. The accelerator pump by-pass valve is located in the bottom of the fuel bowl, one is required per carburetor. More Tuning & Adjustment 1. Most Critical! Be sure for initial carburetor set up all air by-pass screws should be in closed position. These are not commonly used in standard carburetor adjustment. 2. Set the idle speed screw at ¼ to ½ turn in after contact with throttle lever. When doing multiple carburetors all linkage should be disconnected. All carbs should be bench adjusted to same setting. 3. Set the idle mixture screw to one turn out form lightly seated. When checking the seated position to make only light contact with seat, aggressive seating will damage needle and seat of carburetor, Adjustment if possible should be to find smoothest idle with each mixture screw on all carburetors. Some prefer to do one barrel of each carburetor then come back and do the second barrel 4. Start engine as long as engine starts and runs do not turn up idle speed first. 5. After preliminary lean best setting of idle. Check carburetors for synchronization. Commonly done by checking lead or front barrel of each carburetor. 6. You will always want to bring high flow carburetor down to match the low flow carburetor. If this cannot be done you will need to recheck bench assembly for binding throttle in high flow carb. Once you have matched both carburetors you will need to set the idle to the desired idle speed setting. This will be done by adjusting both carbs up or down the same amount and re checking for synchronization. 7. Make one last check of lean best (smoothest running position) idle on all mixture screws one last time. 8. Best idle should end up with the mixture screws at or near one turn off seat. Check rule of thumb for idle jet selection on the other side of this page.

Ever tried a Beru brand coil? German made, cheaper than the Bosch Blue, word has it they're as good if not better. Anyone had any experience with these? 30:50 I'll second those remarks. Bought a CCP made 009 distributor, had a poor spark, due to aluminum posts: took the cap and rotor off my old German distributor and put 'em on the 009 and what a difference!

Yes sir, got one on the 2110 right now. It's even a light blue color. The coil clamp hides the name. Works just fine.

@@TheEZGZhaha no problem Ez, its still a good demonstration. I did this bench test because i bought an electronic points kit from china alibaba. I needed to know of there was even something in the little chineese thing haha. But is seems to work well. About 22€, a petronix kit costs about 149€ over here. 40 euro less then a complete petronix distributor like you bought. So it was worth trying the chineese copy elec points. And so far about 800km from installing they still work very good. I carry a spare distr. with me already adjusted and timing marked on the case. It so surprised with the quality of those 22€ points i bought one extra this week and also a complete FJAS idf40 kit for vw. Cost around 320€ when a real weber kit cost 1400€ over here in belgium. Fun and learn full times coming for sure.. =D

They mention in the literature that you can open the spark plug gap . Have you tried that?
