Whoa! #1. Great beetle. I remember people would take a trip to Germany and buy a new beetle and drive all over Europe and ship the Beetle back to the US at the end of the trip. Cool video. Good luck with the rebuild.

I learned to drive on a '59 that had this same flip top. I haven't seen one like this in ages. Also the transmission was a non syncromesh, so you had to come to a complete stop to get it back in first gear. No gas gauge but it had a reserve tank, so when you ran out of gas you had to reach way under the dash and turn a fuel cock to get going again. It was a great car.

Hi CT, I suggest you completely disassemble the engine to clean it. Keep all parts in order, like lifters, rocker arms, etc. you most likely will have under sized bearings because it has been rebuilt before. The bearings are usually marked but you should measure the crank and main bearing bores. You will need a powerful impact wrench to get the flywheel off.it is possible to do by hand but you will need a flywheel lock and a way to support the engine. Bentley published the best technical manual but is probably out of print. You could probably find one out there somewhere. Good luck, looking forward to more.

Hi, that Beetle is beautiful and lovely to see. My father had an earlier one with the oval rear window. My Humber Hawk that is in my picture is a '61. I am only 42 years old but I think about what the world was like when my car was first about and all that hadn't happened yet back then.

That is one classic vw, love the original look and is untouched. To me they are the best finds just like rusty....

Dennis should have checked the end play , then crack it open . on 1200 can He machine cam bearing inserts on it. Back in the 60s and 70s they use to do that .and before you start dumping money in the engine go and drive one like that and then drive a 68-78 , and see the driveability difference. I now have a 71 and I use to have a 67 with a 80hp DP engine and the 71 with stock 1600 DP on the highway does better - no reduction gears + they are a common break down . Dennis told you that!?

thats the same kind (vw beetle) i used when i'm learning to drive wayback 1980's....learned to drive by myself, nobody taught me, just observing my brother when he is driving and i applied it using his car when he's not around, and i did it...

Exciting to see the 61. I’m not a VW guy necessarily, I work on Mustangs, but I love to see the rebuild process of any car that old. I’ve considered an old Bug but they aren’t getting any cheaper.

Hi again ct! Your friends recommendation about cleaning with diesel fuel is spot on. Leave to soak the worst bit for a few hours , then I use a dish brush ( remember those before everyone had dish washers? ) for the really dirty parts, and also a cheap paint brush for the less dirty parts. The diesel fuel will gently break up the grime with adjetation from the brushes.

Strip it fully a rebuild from Scratch. Ensure you Balance everything including checking piston weights. Polish smooth the cylinder heads and check the capacities match on each cylinder. Oh and from The way that Bug engine is running don’t let that guy touch it.

VERY NICE...

Next step is to buy a flywheel lock if you haven't already got one. It locks the flywheel to the case . Remove the 36mm bolt on the flywheel and the 30mm bolt on the crank pulley then the circlips on the pistons and drive out the piston pins, next remove the oil pump cover below the crank pulley and the oil pump, The all the 13mm nuts and bolts That hold the case together. There is one that people miss just below one of the main nuts that hold the case together at the front. then the six main nuts and the case can now be split . Don't loose the little pins that hold the main brgs in place or the plug for the camshaft. Clean everything. Put the clean case halves, the big 6 big nuts and washers in a tote box with the crank and rods so your friend can measure the crank and inspect the case for wear. Cases can be line bored if they are worn and cranks can be ground. if you are doing the heads up replace the exhaust valves as they occasionally do break. Your friend will tell you which size bearings to order .

I’m not going to comment on the sound of that engine, because I heard it also. CT Check out my video of fixing cylinder head spark plug holes. I found a wonderful tool in AutoZone, or one of those places. It is a tap, and you tap the hole bigger. And a screw in a new spark plug thread. This is not a Heli coil. It is a small tube with threads on it, and a lip at the top. When you screw these in, they don’t want to come out. Also when you put this thing together use only Bosch spark plugs. They are the correct length. The other ones, are slightly longer and leave one thread exposed to the combustion chamber. That thread gets fouled with carbon, then when you try to remove it it tears all your threads out. I use anti seize on my spark plugs also. I wouldn’t buy just rings. I would buy a complete new set of cylinders. They come with pistons, rings and pins with Clips. When you try to pull the old pistons off the rods, you will see how hard they are to come apart . They will be that hard to put back together. If you use new parts everything will go together easily. Also, end a play is crucial. Case may look good, but the rear bearing may be walking (loose) again and check my video of engine assembly. I used my old pushrod tubes, bad mistake. I did not see the cracks in them. I have two of them leaking now on a new engine. I bought a set of really cool aluminum two piece pushrod tubes from rock auto. You can take them off and put them on, without removing your cylinder heads. And adjust them to fit the clearance. Very cool, $69. Lastly, this is a bus And when you get done with your engine, you’ll have a 40 horse power engine. Unless you do something to hop it up. That means the bus will of course be slow. Even with a new engine they only went about 70 miles an hour flat out. And that took a long time to get to. If I were you, and I’m not. I’m just suggesting. I would look for a 1600 engine. Rebuilt and in good shape they make about 15 hp more. And they’re much more accessible To modifications. You can easily get 2000 mL out of one of those. With dual carburetors and a mild cam. And make about 100 horse power. This will really propel your van. And you won’t be scared to get it on the highway. I would put your old engine back together, and just set it in the corner. Or if you have the bread, have it rebuilt. And set it in the corner . Knowing that you have the original engine for the bus. Yes, you have to rebuild an engine. In my opinion you should put your money in an engine that’s going to make a little more horsepower. The only modification to the van would be, an unseen machining of the inside bell housing of the transmission. This can be found on RU-vid. Yes it will run on 6 V. 6 V spark is the same as 12 V spark, just a different coil. Great videos, thank you for your commitment to the Volkswagen people out there. Again this is just my opinion, and everyone has one you know.

If engine striped that far new pistons and rings is a must they are all cheap in UK Inc barrels probly £100 and probly never have to touch it again if you ballance ps that beatle looks nice but engine running on 3 cylinders or got a Pitstone ring stuck on one side

@12:20 onward - blown exhaust or not, that is *not* how an air-cooled VW sounds when it's running right. That level of mechanical clatter (and the obvious misfiring from inside) is a clear sign that something is well out-of-whack. It's your money and your choice, but if some 'expert' turned up with a motor sounding like that, I'd send him home pronto.

Hey CT. Thanks for Video. Is it possible that the Beetle's engine only runs on 3 cylinders? The sound over the camera is really funny. Normally, the engine does not sound at all. I hear a metallic noise

Ohhhhh CT, that 61 beetle engine runs like a diesel dumptruck....... If he is satisfied whith that, I would reconsider letting him rebuild your engine... to be honest...

aa pistons are fine. Upgrade it to the 1384 kit Put in a mild cam like engle 100 or 90. install cam bearings. 1600 rockers. All will look stock on the outside but it will be better to drive. The cam will allow the engine to run at higher RPM at cruise speed without running as hot. Then put in a stock big nut 4.12 with 82 4th. Then 205 75 14. This is the best combination for the 40hp I ran this in my 57 bus for 20 plus years and it was drivable. OTherwise it is not really drivable. All stock it just not good for the roads today.

Sounds like the bottom end is going to fall out, or put rod through the engine, that does not sound like exhaust. Or may be a German left his machine gun in there.
