to everyone commenting about how slow and "pathetic" this is just keep in mind it's a Passat station wagon thats over 10 years old.. The thing weighs more than rosie o'donnell after a night at hometown buffet! 275hp was plenty for the time (4.6 V8 Mustangs of the same era made around 230) as the Passat is a family car not designed for speed. Just appreciate it for what it is and listen to that exhaust note ffs!!

To that time untill now(?) it was the only W8 ever used in a normal car. The Phaeton and the R8 got the normal 4,2l V8. It was planned to use the W8 in the Phaeton too but they only build the W12 Phaeton.

People have to remember that Passat w8 weights 1800-1900 kilos, is 4motion (less whp), and technology is from 2002.... It can't be super fast with those specs. This isnt Mpower bmw which are made to hit tracks and drags, its a family car and exotic one. But I promise that u wont smoke W8 with your vtec civic😂😂😂 STOP BEING MORONS

As a former Passat W8 owner, I agree with you. Okay, this might not seem very fast on film, but rest assured, the W8 isn't slow. Sure, it's a 15 year old car, and this particular one has a respectable distance on the dial. But 1,4TSI's /1,9TDI's and all the other bollocks I read in the comments won't get anywhere near this W8. The 8cilinder just keeps on pulling. Loads of torque all the time. I have had mine up to 285km/h. Try that with your diesel, TSI or VTEC. Sure, she's not super fast, but she's a lot quicker than what this film shows, and surely a lot quicker than the cars most wankers drive who posted stupid comments here. (Now driving an RS6 by the way, so I do understand speed)

DevasionX oh... Really? An Audi RS6 c7 will beat that any day of the week and twice on Sundays. We were talking Civics. Not Integra's. And 0 km/u.to100km/h. an -unmodified- Civic might be even faster. But let's try 100km/u. to 250km/u. Ow, wait.. The Honda does not do that... 250km./u. Or 0- to 100km./u. on a wet road. Or with 5 people and luggage in the car. Don't forget, this thing weighs over 1700kgs. and was made to be a family car. Not a purpose built racer like an type R Honda.

Never heard of the W8 with reworked exhaust and I must say it is a real delight as my favorite engine is the VR6 engine and it has the raspy undertone from VR6 and a typical V8 rumble resulting a glorious sound. I'm glad I stumbled on this video.

People say it's slow. I think it's quite quick and has decent torque. On top of that, consider that this car is naturally aspirated. No turbo, inter cooler or any trickery. It's a "simple", bare W8. This engine can easily output between 500-1000hp with modifications. But by stock, this is not what was projected. I think VW had a specific market in mind with these cars. Sort of a rule of thumb, the bigger the engine and less forced (no turbo etc) the more durable and reliable should be. So a quick and reliable car. (but I might be wrong and these things break all the time)

This Passat shared a lot of the tech with Audi C5 and that made it soo good. The only Passat with proper 4x4 (quattro taken from C5) and the only W8 ever made (and ever designed V8 from VW). For today standard's is slow and thirsty, but who cares, this is classic already! Thank you for sharing this video and reminding us for this amazing car!

it seems slow, but this guy dont use full power of this engine in whole video, he revs max 5500-5800 i think, but redline is 6500 and full power from 6000 to redline, this car can go 130kmh in 2gear not only 100 when this guy changes gear, this car is really faster than it seem from this video..

very nice sound. for my taste and longer distances too loud. acceleration is more than enough in almost every situation. still variable valve timing would have been a good addition. but in 8 yylinder engines not that common the only downside is the thirst of that engine. and also the weight on the front axle is quite high wich means a lot of wear of different components and a shit ton of understeer if you want to drive fast around corners. but that is not what it was made for :)

With Style stock sound is way more pleasant for everyday use. Another downide is maintaining cost of this engine because only this car had this engine. A new engine is extremely expensive.

Actually, it does have variable valve timing. The intake side has i think four variations and the exhaust side is infinitely variable. Little known fact :)

It might not have a lot of power for a 4.0 litre engine, it might be slow, but damn its so cool and sounds so gorgeous. A manual, n/a w8, all wheel drive wagon. As for a practical daily driver it doesn't get much cooler than this. Its a shame that Audi didn't also use this engine in the C5 A6, so they wouldn't be as rare today...

I've never seen a W8 Passat with a manual transmission till now...never seen it in wagon form either.... this didn't come to America I don't think but nonetheless it sounds positively spine tingling....it looks plenty fast to me!

It was sold here in the U.S., just not in large quantities. Only 11,000 total W8 Passats were made from 01-04. If you can find one for sale near you, that’d be an amazing occurrence for sure.

Funny enough it's actually kind of hard to heel and toe with a Passat W8 manual transmission at least I find it is but I have a small feet I have to use the brake with my and use the gas with my toe which is very unorthodox usually heel and toe is the other way around

VERY rare w8 manual. Amazing sound, but.. i would smoke hard way with my b5 4m variant 1.9tdi (only 5gears, but i still manage to reach 235- @5080rpm.. waaaaaaay faster). Of course, isn't stock car, but still less powerful than those 275bhp (more torque than w8)

Krass wie sich der W8 quälen muss um mal auf 200 zu kommen. Das können aber viele, auch kleinere , Sauger besser. Selbst aus dieser Zeit. Da fragt man sich wo das Kaufargument für diesen Motor lag....mal abgesehen vom Sound.

The manuals like this were not too slow and the engine sounds fabulous. It was the auto that sapped power. Sadly most were auto.

@giantmidget08 It took 8 seconds to do 0-60 mph. That's pretty good for a family wagon. The average car does it at about 10 to 11 sec.

Der Sound des W8 ist Ultraschall Affen geil Hammer einfach aber sonst ist er extrem lahm und extrem träge und kommt mir vor wie ein 150 PS Auto.

LOVE that sound! But its kinda slow from 100-200 kph for 275 hp. (28 seconds) :( My Passat 3B 1.8T (chip) does the 100-200 kph in 24 seconds...

C'est tout à fait normal car de base ce sont deux vr6 assemblé auxquelles ils ont enlevés 2 cylindres donc 2 vr4 ce qui donne le w8 😊
