Casey Putsch goes over the 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco and everything that is wrong with it and how he intends to make it better. No the car is not as good on RU-vid, Instagram, thumbnails, or real life as his wife's bottom. :( The car is a let down and needs a lot of work, but could be an epic ride. Casey goes through all the spare parts and finds a rare super 80s aftermarket part that is uber Rad!

Most likely the car goes lean and stumbles because your in-tank pump is crapping out. That’s probably the reason why the backseat bottom was out. It’s under that round plastic cap. 👍🏻

I had a beautiful black 88 16V. It was bought used from the original owner in the 90’s. Than sold between me and 2 of my friends over the years till it was my daily driver till I garaged it for years. I sold it a few years ago with 188K on it. Was in better shape than yours. I sold it cheap for 2700. But actually my favorite Scirocco was the 81 S Model. Now I own 3 of them. A blast to drive, handles superior to the 88 16V, the 88 was off balance with the added inches to the front and rear of the car. But I did like the horse power gain with the 16V. I always did liked the white over the black color. Your car looks beautiful. It’s in decent shape. Great leather interior, mine was the black grey velour material.

NIce!!! Last sale I saw a few months ago, restored was either $32k or $35k. Can't quite remember. In current condition, I think market value for mine could be in the $15k range. In the past 6 months, 2 other Scirocco's sold for $25k and $28k I realize you know what you''re doing. I hope you don't me chiming in..... I've seen that rear window louver you purchased being sold recently. It's ok but if you can actually find one from the 80's, those are manufactured much nicer looking. The black board you were holding but couldn't name (12:30) is referred to as a parcel shelf. Do you have the Euro wiring for the Euro lights? The US harness doesn't quite work. I got lucky and have headlight adjustment motors with my Euro headlights plus the side marker lights. Those front seats look to be in excellent shape. I have Corrado seats. It looks like you'll need the hard to find plastic runners that fit on the adjustment frame and keep it from wobbling in the frame rail. The problem with a white headliner for the sunroof is that it will get dirty after awhile from the movement back and forth. I don't know how to keep bits of dust and grime from building up and transferring onto the headliner. When you do the respray, taking off the gutter rack protectors is super delicate. They may be siliconed in or just "glued" in from years of dirt and grime. The front tab can easily break off so try not to bend it up. They're designed to slide towards the back of the car about a 1/4" to 3/8" to unlock the tab in front and in back. Then you can gently lift/pry the guard out. What great man land you have! You are the car guy, love it! Nice YT channel! Glad to see that you've taken off with it. I'm working on mine.

Just bought a very original sub 50k mile 1986 scala off my dad, loads of recipts and proof of mileage etc. been off the road garaged since 2019 (strut top bearing race cracked and stiff clutch cable pulled through bulk head) and was garaged for at least 15 years before that, I did some work last year when it had to come out of storage. I had to weld the cracked bulkhead and fit a new cable to repair the clutch issue and while i was at it I replaced the strut tops (re enforced), new bump stop and covers, painted the struts and replaced the dampers, powder coated the front springs, new bottom arms, ball joints & bushes, new disc back plates (and wheel bearings because they have to come out to do the back plates) serviced it with new oil & filter, air filter, spark plugs & leads, cambelt kit, water pump, fresh coolant and thermostat. after all that it has just sat since, It was painful seeing it unused, i've just got to pass my driving test now :)

For low power issues, also check that the cam timing is not back a tooth. The shaved grill is likely to accommodate the Kamei grill spoiler with the US lights. The Kamei eyebrow spoiler was designed for use with euro lights. Your euro lights have broken adjusters, difficult to get. There are certain BMW ones that fit I believe.

The Scirocco brings back memories. I had the first generation 1980 model and it was one of the quickest, light and nimble fun car I ever drove. It was only 1.6 litre engine (78 HP in Canada) but for that time, it gave Chevy V8’s a good run. The Scirocco was less than 2000 lbs and I’d accelerate up and down streets with hills and get air born and never bottom out. I gave it up after 13 years and got myself a 1987 944 Turbo. Yes, another 80’s classic. I still have it (over 30 years) and it still awesome to drive. Anyways, you’ve got yourself a classic car that needs a little TLC. Looking for your videos on the progress on this. Keep up the great work!

The grease in the sliding pin gets old, so yours isn’t sliding freely to lock the seat in. Just clean and re grease and make sure the spring is still there. Also check the plastic clips on the corners of the seat, they break off and your seat will rock side to side. Hard to find them now. A good idea for someone to make 3D replacements and sell them on eBay. I hand waxed mine so much over the years I had some primer showing through too. Please don’t repaint it, you will devalue the car allot. These cars had great paint. Just detail it.

The old Mustangs had an oil *pressure* gauge. But I added an oil temp gauge. My pressure would be rock steady, but when the engine was almost a quart low, the TEMP would go up by ten degrees. Oil temperature was an early warning system. (The rear main seal on the 289's all leaked.)

sound deadening pad, cant remember where it goes though, awesome score on the euro lights. I am more than a little jealous, between the rocco and the 928. I got your cars twin 20 some odd years ago, and my boss that I got it from had a 928. There is a single stop bolt that goes through the front of the seat rail thats missing. Looks like a really good example, I would go ahead and paint it, they are rare enough they are only going to increase in value. I missed your wifes bottom, but if its better than that car, it must be awesome! OH, and I may have a period correct OEM VDO oil pressure gauge, I will have to do some digging.

My last one in 1998 was another white 88 16v that had been totally customized by the previous owner with euro headlights, euro bumpers, white Enkei's, Sony stereo with MB Quartz speakers and Kenwood amps, lowered with coil-overs, welded in chassis reinforcement beams front and rear......I miss that last one as it was totaled in a wreck. Interesting find. I had an 85' and 1980 Scirocco. the 85' was white, needed paint... you know the drill. for the seat, in the front middle rail is 10mm nut and bolt- that keeps the seat from coming out of the the track- at the back on each side are the sliders; all of these points middle and sides have plastic sliders that wear out. you should be able to still get them. clean all the rails replace these sliders and you should be fine. Which engine size is it? 2.0 or 1.8; most likely its an 2.0- very similar to a 1990 an up Passat (i had one of those too) got 321,000 miles out of it before selling it on. Yes, there are two fuel pumps; one low pressure then a high pressure. depending on which one fails it'll keep running but will eventually take out the other pump. - do your pump test and change the fuel filter. A quick check with the CIS can be done with a nickel; if the plate is a nickel's edge lower than the machined edge , its pretty close. Setup involves a DVOM and a t handle allen wrench. make sure to take the allen wrench out between adjustments. there is a plug covering this adjustment hole from the factory; if its missing- good chance someone has been messing with it, bet you a nickel. I wish you the best of luck, she'll be a pretty easy resto. Though, I would have liked you to have found a 88' Fox wagon ~ swap in a 98~2000' Passat 1.8t. now that would be a thing to behold! light and powerful. Kinda like the early 80 scirocco S. good luck, have fun. don't get discouraged; just finished watching your hypo vid earlier. living the dream of the nightmare myself.

You seem to have a knack for buying cars which I know about. Its KE-Jetronic, NOT K-Jetronic... Quite a few differences. First thing I'd do is check the differential pressure regulator current. It should be oscillating around 8mA with a frequency of 1-3 Hz... After the car is warmed up. If the fuel pump is bad, they often start buzzing. The in-tank pump is cheap and easy to replace. The outside of the tank pump was way more expensive. If the intank pump is crapping out replace it before it breaks the other one, because it will. As a side note I had a hybrid 8V engine (ABA 2L 8V block with RD 1.8l 8V head and Hor 270 cam) as well as a 9A (2L 16V)... Given a choice between the two the 8V felt about as fast, and probably was, but seemed more reliable, simpler, cheaper and got notably better fuel economy.

VW comissioned Porsche to build the 924 prototype for them using parts from the VW/Audi parts bins. The 70's oil crisis scared VW, so they pulled out of the 924 project and sold it to Porsche and went with the Sirocco instead. Porsche used the 924 to help save the company as no one was buying 911's at the time and the engineers wanted to get away from the rear-engined design of the 911. So a new president pushed the 928, 924 and later the 944 to help take the company in a new direction. The 911 snobs hated this and started buying 911s in spite and eventually ousted the president and the rest is 80's history. So yeah, lots of odd parts interchange between the MK1 Golf/VW T4 Transporter/Super Beetle and the 924/944. Even the fancy, crack prone cast control arms on the later 944 are simply based around the Golf geometry.

I say this because parts are NLA and the cables and some mechanisms like to break. Again just a heads up and it does almost sound like your pre pump or in tank pump is dead. I once had that problem that car was stopping and no power,8v,not 16,rest the same. I solved it within amount of 70 dollars. 1st thing 0 cost is nasty to reach and most likely it can be, just not many people know it. I do not like typing this, under hood as you stand and look at it there is a tube at the farthest point to put fingers there, central looking, up behind the engine first thing that is next to chassis. Oh, man, what an explanation, it gets loosen, tighten that. Fuel filter and maybe the ancient computer which can vary from 20 to 100 dollars if Bosch. After market 20 Bosch 100. If it is not that then the pump or all that package that comes with the pump, like pre- pump. Change the rubber tubes for vacuum, 1 dollar costs, very important parts though, they get cracked. If lucky 30 dollars and no problems, if not 350.

I do not follow college or professional Football very much and did not know that the Huskers lost the 1992 National Championship to Clemson. Everybody in town was talking about burning my car or shooting at it. Fortunately, they were too nice to follow through with the ideas.

The 8V watercooled engines had a nasty habit of spiking the oil pressure above 100 psi on cold startup. In the late 80's I had a 1983 GTI. I replaced the analog clock with an electric 150psi VDO gauge to get one that had a sensor that didn't rupture and puke oil all over on the first cold start. I've forgotten what VDO series matched the original gauges. I want to say Cockpit series but I'm really not sure.

I've had 2 of these Sciroccos back in the day, all be it both carburetted. On both vehicles the fuel tank filler pipe which runs in to the rear wheel arch corroded in the wheel arch area allowing the ingress of foreign matter which caused the lack of power issue exactly as you described.

So watching this video I got distracted by Bernoulli's Principle, what is up with all the airfoil frames hanging on the walls? Sorry I saw a shiny object or maybe it was a squirrel.

Yeah, the move from oil pressure gauges to lights bothers me. On *some* cars when you're key on engine off the oil light being on actually verifies that when you have no oil pressure, and that the sensor and light both work. On newer cars the lights coming on generally only tells you that the bulb works and is just part of the IPC module boot-up. That means that you never actually *know* if you have oil pressure, because the light being off could mean you're fine or it could mean the sensor is broken.

I have no idea as to what idiot at the DOT thought that all cars must have square headlights in the mid 80's ,but , I am glad they did . I love my 87 YJ Jeep because they were the only wranglers with square lights. Most jeep guys hate them and don't give the stupid jeep wave and that fine by me.

well you can replace from the same era the seats on vw models, at least has far has i know in europe, the golf, passat, polo, from the 90's can be interchanged between them, also some other manufacturers, for example the seat ibiza, inca, conrado, the same can be changed, the seats the dashborad, only between the polo/ inca/ ibiza/ conrado the seats you can fit even from the golf with out a fuss it's plug and sit, i have vw polo seats in my seat ibiza...

I just bought a 84 scirocco!!! I’ve never owned one and never worked on one but I’ve wanted one for so long! Haven’t seen it yet. Gonna look at it tonight. To the best of the guys knowledge the motor just needs a carb and an exhaust.

Please strip the bumpers. Painted bumpers just don't look right. The European ones were all black. Mirrors should be black, as well.

Had the twin of this car even down to the wheels. Was a electrical nightmare. Loved the car but taught me to never buy another VW. Euro sport looks exactly like the Neuspeed I had

Scirocco was the first VW to get the 16v engine, in the Europe and UK it was 139 BHP standard :-P

I know you don’t like it and this is why you should send it to me... check your fuel pump inside the tank . They often go bad. I’ve had 7 scirocco and I changed it in 4 of my cars.

Sure it is not a Euro-Version? Did you run a Carfax? The covered licence plate holes in the rear look like they held a larger European plate at some point....

Don't forget to check the fuel filler neck. It can rust then all the rusty crud starts blocking up the fuel system. Well that's what happens here in England.

they might have wrapped corrado fabric/foam around a rocco seat frame. Thats how you do mk2 to mk1 rear recaro seat swaps. Most likely if the fronts are corrado.

the problem with you're seats is the same issue i have in mine its a small plastic/ rubber guide in the front of the locking rail that degrades over time, to move seats and lock them in place you have to pull that leaver then for the seat to lock you release the handle and just wiggle the butt to lock it in place
