VW Vanagon Westfalia Door Handle and Key Cylinder Repair

@@GarageKing Yes, we will get out camping too later this month. I have had a few vanagons and I do like the later grey interiors. Our '91 has a number of improvements over our first westy (an '84). Non of them have had air-con though. The climate where I live (usually) only has a few days a year when one really needs AC. Happy camping!

@@GarageKing I am trying to help my GF with the lock mechanism on the sliding door of a 84. I can't see what is failing without taking the entire thing out but have yet to see a video on what the internals look like on the Thumb Lock from the inside (black knob that threads in). If you by chance do that... would love to see it haha. Thanks for all you do, helping thousands through your patient vids!

@@brandonstrong4429 I know exactly what you are talking about. That little black knob that goes up and down to lock. Haven't done one of those yet, but thanks for putting the idea in my head. I can't see it being that complex as these Vanagon's are quite simple for the most part. If you can take the interior door panel off and look with a small mirror that would probably help. The whole thing may have to come out anyway.

@@GarageKing Yep, I am probably ripping it out shortly, will send a pic if I do! My guess is just a gunked up arm stuck on something.

@@brandonstrong4429 Yup, when you watched my vid, I was afraid those tumblers were going to fly out, well I had to pull them out with needle nose pliers they were so gunked up, so your van is an 84, that's a lot of years of accumulation!!!! I would appreciate a pic when you take it apart, that would be nice of you. Thanks !!!

Hey thanks for the great question and you raise a very good point. In all the other cars I have replaced door handles, I have had to take the door panel off, so I did it for this one. Now you could try with the hidden screw and just pull it out, but I'm wondering if I took the door panel off to make sure the door rod was lined up, so when you squeeze the handle the door opens. That could have been why. Great catch !!!
