"This was the first collaboration between Mark Elder and David Pountney since the latter's appointment as the ENO's director of productions ... was announced. They had worked together previously ... and had known each other since their Cambridge days when they discovered that they shared not only an enthusiasm for opera but also the approach to what has become generally known as "music theatre".
The decision to give the "Dutchman" in one act as Wagner originally intended ... was a good one; and although Elder's opting for ending the overture and opera as Wagner wanted, i.e. without the redemption music, might suggest an easy way out to an insoluble production problem, it seemed to me the right decision.
Any fears that Pountney was going to give us another of those modern, political stagings of Wagner proved groundless, for this was, in effect, a traditional staging of the work, though one that used modern lighting techniques, a revolving stage, and projections. ... There were some highly effective touches, none more than Senta's drowning in the swirling waves at the end of the opera. Pountney made great use of the apron so that the singers were brought in front of the proscenium arch and so in close contact with the audience. This led to immediacy, but it also tempted Elder to let the orchestra rip at times. Indeed that "raw energy and youth of the work" that Pountney talked about in an interview in "The Times", was very much in evidence in the orchestral playing which ... was often too loud.
Norman Bailey has been singing Wagner in London for all of fifteen years; and if his voice does not now have quite the ring at the top it once had, it still has retained that lovely burnished sound so characteristic of his singing. Perhaps he did not display all that angst we have become accustomed to in other productions, but his reactions when Senta pledged herself to be faithful unto death and then, later when he believed he had been betrayed by her, were most moving.
Josephine Barstow scored yet another triumph as Senta. She may not be a Wagnerian soprano like Flagstad, Nilsson, or even Rysanek, but she almost made us believe she was; and in the last scene the voice opened up most thrillingly. More of her words came across than usual and she really looked like a young girl possessed. John Treleaven was an impressive Erik, singing with great musicality, and Dennis Wicks a jovial Daland, though his characterisation was ... two-dimensional. Adrian Martin's lovely lyric tenor was heard to admirable effect as the steersman, and Katherine Pring bustled effectively as Mary. The chorus outdid itself-it was augmented by some fifteen extra voices, but it sounded like a Bayreuth chorus of over a hundred."

"Der fliegende Holländer" ("The Flying Dutchman") is an opera by Richard Wagner, with a German libretto by the composer. It was originally in one act but later revised into three. The libretto is based on a retelling of the legend of the Flying Dutchman by Heinrich Heine. It was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden on 2nd January, 1843, with the composer conducting.
