I made a blog post with more information and products they recommend too: latoyaebony.com/rules-no-butters-no-oils-30-day-hair-detox I’ll be adjusting my process as I go along. I’m currently taking the Black Girl Curls course and I’m learning a lot about their methodology!
I’m 3-weeks in and my hair is doing better than with oils and butters. My style is lasting longer so far this week. I think I am experiencing less dryness. Also, my hair is softer.
Hey Sis!! I have to check out your series now that I’m in the thick of it. I didn’t want to watch before I could form my own opinion, but I hear you’ve got some great tips. I’m on week two so I’m gonna check your series out! ❤️
I almost completely stopped using hair products and oils. My hair is doing great! I wash my hair once a week. I've learned how to finger detangle pretty well (with just water). My hair absorbs water super well (I love how my hair feels with no oil in it). Every once in a while I put rosemary oil on my scalp (to promote hair growth). But the best part is I don't wake up to oily pillows and my face breaking out.
Just with the title I knew who you were talking about haha, I liked the way you talked about this because there are other youtubers that refuse it completely without even trying to understand the method. I don't condemn anyone who doesn't want to try it but deny it completely or share a negative view without properly understand it or try it's kind of disappointing. Wonderful video as usual ❤
I understand where you’re coming from and how disappointing it can be as a viewer. However, as a creator, I understand why someone wouldn’t want to risk it. Many creators have a method that works and have given them great results. It’s kind of a “if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it” thing. Also, if your livelihood was based off the health of your hair and the ability to try different products with various ingredients, it becomes a larger issue than just trying a “trend”, you know? I completely understand the core to your point of view - don’t speak negatively if you won’t invest the time into understanding or trying. I feel that. I personally view these videos as the creators listing reasons why they don’t want to try it and I move on with my day lol! Everyone is entitled to autonomy over what they will and won’t do with their hair. I appreciate your insight, Mariel!
@@LaToyaEbonyHair yes, I can understand why some people don't want to try it, even if they are not content creators because people usually sticks to what works for them, for that reason I mentioned that I do not condemn anyone who doesn't want to try it. I just wanted to let that clear so people doesn't take my comment in the wrong way
Some stylists... not bgc...do use mousse as a topper. That uncle funky daughter pulls in ALL the moisture. I tried it with a mousse on a humid day... my hair laughed at me. Can't wait to see your results.
I am looking forward to hearing about your experience! The only thing I think you’re missing is an actual clarifying shampoo. Shampoo once with a clarifying shampoo, then follow it with a moisturizing shampoo. I use Kinky Curly Come Clean, but there are others. Look for the ingredient c14-16 olefin sulfonate in sulfate free shampoos. Alternatively, you can just use a clarifying shampoo with sulfates.
I appreciate the way you described the detox/method/lifestyle (lol) and also that you pointed out why people would subscribe to it or even simply its potential as just a detox while taking what you like from it. There’s been a lot of hostility around this topic so I’m happy whenever people speak about it with an open perspective. I came to through info from stylists from twitter and have not gone through BGC in any real or detailed way so I don’t call myself a detoxer or one who have followed the detox specifically. But, I have taken this information and it has helped me be more mindful about products and ingredients while fitting in with my need for simplicity around my hair. I took to the no raw oils thing almost immediately though haha I saw that and said “bet” then I saw the no leave in thing and said “you don’t know my life” 😂. But my mind have since shifted on that for the most part.
Black Girl Curls has digital library, "See Some Curls" that goes into detail about the process, to include products and how to apply the products properly to retain moisture. I am in the process of my detox, and so far have noticed a difference in my ability to maintain my twist out with just mousse (The Doux). The hair feels dry, but not dehydrated. My curls have a lighter feel to them and have movement. Excited to watch your journey. I have a hair appointment with a cut it kinky stylist (Love Ley Curls Studio) the end of August. The hair appointment is almost 3 hours, this includes teaching you about your hair, product application for the wash and go, and the cut. They recommend staying the course for a year to really see the hydrated hair we all deserve.
I want to try The Doux next. I’ve heard it’s amazing. That so awesome!! I love hearing about salons that actually take their time to educate clients. 🙌🏾
Love ley curls is my stylist also! You will definitely see a difference in your hair on your next wash after you see her. The cut makes everything so much easier. Best wishes to you on your journey!
Anxious to see the result? Watch this Instagram video - and follow me while you’re at it 😉: instagram.com/reel/CRU1vuOgVNw/? P.S. I’m still learning from the See Some Curls library and I’ll be adjusting my routine as I learn more. Excited to give this a try!
I’m so excited you’ve decided to embark on this detox journey!!! I’m so excited to see the results. I always appreciate your willingness to try something new no matter how scary it sounds 💜
I've been doing Anthony Dickeys Method since last year after my big chop and my hair has been flourishing. I thought I wouldn't be able to do wash n go but it has helped my hair grow tremendously!
By the way I am not trying to fight or anything but I just wanted to mention that SHEA BUTTER does not actually penetrate the hair shaft. It just sits ontop of hair. There are very few oils that will penetrate the hair shaft and our scalp also produces it's own oils too. Kindest regards 😇🥰
@@diyangeluk I use it on my hair and skin. I love it for my skin. I use it as a sealant on my hair and yes I know it doesn't penetrate hair, but it can for skin.
I knew curiosity will get the better of you which is the sign of someone who is eager to learn and form your own opinion thru research. Two people I watch who have a wealth of information and great results are Maame Cerwah and Fo Adunni. They are worth the time to review and full of facts and information. I am sure you will enjoy the knowledge they have to share. Fo Adunni said it took her a little over a year to reach the results that she have today. You may not want to continue that long but I am sure you will at least pick up some new knowledge or understanding of your hair. I know that I have.
I did a modified version of no butter and oil on a twist out. I say modified because I didn’t read the ingredients in the shampoo and conditioner. I used mousse as a styler and I really like the results. My hair has movement and is touchable. My hair really feels clean. There was no gunk caked in my comb and brush. I usually use some type of cream and gel on twist outs. I actually love the results. I think I may switch to mousse as my styler if it lasts. This is day two🤷🏽♀️.
Yes you can use mouse and gel together for wash n go .I would advice use uncle funky daughter gel as base gel and look another styling product as a toppper like mouse or gel .Uncle funky daughter gel doesn’t have long hold so that why they suggest to add a topper gel .
Are you subscribed to See Some Curls? There's so much misinformation on this method by folks following hearsay. It would be cool to see someone ACTUALLY do it the way the creators intended. My hair has changed for the better following the actual method.
So excited about this! We love your experimental spirit and it totally helps us. I was skeptical about the "no oils/no butters" thing. But looking forward to what you observe! I totally look to you for tips and info on my natural hair, sis. 🤗
You guys make sure you learn whether your water is soft or hard because it can affect your hair so much By removing the harmful ions in your water supply, soft water changes the dry texture of your hair, making it soft and shiny. Soft water will also save you money spent on shampoos and conditioners, as it binds better with hair products to create a thicker and richer lather. So basically you can maintain moisture. Hard water can cause the dryness in your hair That's because hard water contains a buildup of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. This produces a film on the hair, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate. As a result, the hair is left dry and prone to breakage. Leave these issues unresolved and it could even lead to hair loss. So you might want a Filter if your water is drying out your hair I noticed that when I go to places where there is hard water oils and water and grease and creams dry my hair out but when I come back to where we live (we have soft water) my hair feels moisturized with water and oils and creams. So it might just be hard water and not the oils
Thanks for explaining it. I predict more breakage, and hair loss. I will never try this method. I usually avoid videos that talk about it, but yours caught my eye.
I have fine 4c, normal to thick density .My breakage reduced with this method, shedding reduce and my curl definition is the best that I have ever seen it. They are extremely defined without me forcing anything. I was skeptical but now I want to make it a part of my lifestyle.
I would like to see this method done without a wash and go. Especially on low porosity type 4 natural hair and i also think this trend is mostly for people in America because finding most of the recommended products on the other side well.
I am in Australia we have the products here. I can buy Innersence 10min from my apartment in the Melbourne city. We’re are you located? Also you don’t have to be brand specific. Just follow the guidelines when selecting other brands because there is a bunch clean products on the market
This is what I'm thinking too. I'm usually a braid or twist my hair for a few days after wash day then I'd wear that style until wash day. I'm also from South Africa and it's only recently that we started getting more popular natural hair brands but uncle funky isn't sold here from what I've seen 😞 and most of the stylers with botanical ingredients in the first five ingredients are so expensive.
@@maxine1246 For twists I've used a foam/styling mousse. I've used kinky curly but I've seen others use one from aunt Jackie's. I have used it both with and without a leave in under. I agree that many of the recommended products are pricey or simply not easy to get outside the US. Sometimes you can find some cheaper options with the ingredients guidelines. Maybe you can find local products with similar ingredients and a better price point?
Great video! My fine, coily type 4 hair does not like Uncle Funky’s gel. I use Camille Rose curl maker and top it with Xtreme (wet line) gel. Gives me a defined wash n go that has movement.
In the rules, I think it’s important to note clarifying as well, but it’s probably coming later in your video. So clarifying and then using a balancing or moisturizing shampoo weekly.
@@MiVidaBellisima right. That’s why I said use a balancing or moisturizing shampoo weekly! I only clarify once a month. But like we’re both saying, you do need to clarify at some point and a lot of ppl are still afraid to do that at all.
Week 4 for me! Did a quick wash and go this weekend, did the least this time, put a hat on to cover my perceived messy hair on a store run...Still Got Complements "Your hair is Beautiful!!!" Me??😳 But really there Is a standout this week, pleasantly surprised 💕
Hi LaToya! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and see your results after using Uncle Funky’s product. I have it but can’t seem to get it right. Thanks for doing this video💕.
I haven't been able to figure it out either. Doesn't seem to want to define my hair at all, and I've tried it in an out of the shower. I'm back to using the kinky curly, it keeps my hair soft all week and defines and clumps instantly. I've seen people say that UFD has a learning curve lol.
@@LaToyaEbonyHair they advice gel + mousse for ppl with more of a silkier surface texture. And humectant gel + hold gel for ppl with a more coarse surface texture. And for true mastery, they have a digital library with videos detailing their method for the results and hair goals u want, it’s called seesomecurls (it’s not all about curl chasing, but mostly about hair are), however it does cost money.
@@MissStrawberryMae I’m sorry to hear this. I tried it, and it held water in my hair very nicely , and allowed it to hang. And allows my hair to feel very hydrated throughout the week.
Me: earlier today wishing this video was out. Me: going to sleep immediately after watching Jenn's and hoping you'd see it and it'd help you with your experiment before you finished it. Me: waking up to this upload and being so excited!
Other youtubers who have tried this make it seem like this is a forever thing, a complete switch. Have not heard anyone call this a detox which is why I haven’t even wanted to give it any serious consideration. I appreciate your perspective and clarification.
I think it's meant to be both - detox and switch. I believe those of us who want to continue using oils and butters in our routine can benefit from trying this method as a detox. If you end up loving the results, you can continue. It's how I approach just about anything I do. I don't believe in hard and fast rules, just following what works for you. 😊
Latoya, you know that experimentation is encoded in your DNA! I am looking forward to the videos to come as you share your experience with us. I am one of those naturals who never followed the rules. For example, I use sulphate shampoos, products with silicone, etc.
You should probably get a topper for UFD as I’ve heard all round it doesnt have much hold. However if you like the fluffy big look you good to go. Your style just might not last as long
Can’t wait to see how it goes for you 💜 I am subscribed to see some curls to see what all the hoopla is about. It’s very interesting. Not sure if I’ll try it anytime soon though. I follow moknowshair and I’m trying to wash my hair/deep condition more often like she suggests which is my biggest problem.
That’s a common concern for high porosity naturals…I’ve even heard that having high porosity isn’t normal - that it happens over time…😩 so many new ideologies coming out. I don’t even know! Lol
Don’t be scared to adjust things as it makes sense for you. I have very thick and very high density hair almost to my waist and I’m tired of washing/detangling taking an hour… I’m going to start using my diy prepoo the day before to cut the wash time under 30 minutes 😊
Idk I can't wait to see your results but my hair needs more moisture than those products you showed. Maybe there are others but my hair starts to loc after I wash my hair. It'll clump and then the frizzy roots decides it wants in on the action...its a whole mess. 🤔 so this may not be for me.
I was skeptical at first but I get 100 clumpage with out shing long, less shedding and breakage. Before starting this I was noticing some breakage especially at the crown . I hope now it can gro and catch
From what I’ve read, there’s definitely a learning curve, but it’s also possible this method may not be for you. I think if you’re curious it might be worth giving it at least 30 days.
I’m excited to see your results because my hair with a styler or gel but no butter is a brittle mess. I rarely use oil anymore by itself. I DIY my prepoo, butters, & deep conditioners and add them in then, by themselves they just sit on my hair
Personally I get where this is coming from however I keep thinking about wen they said no grease years ago mind u our mothers and grandmothers used grease on our hair n our hair flourished so it’s hard to believe we shouldn’t use oils in butters at all…now I do believe they have a point about not using oils on our hair because water and oils don’t mix so it can prevent moisture from getting in which is y I haven’t used the LOC or LCO method in a long time n I normally just oil my scalp n my hair has flourished but at the same time doing wat works for u n ur hair is key n I don’t think there’s anything wrong with detoxing ur hair
I have 4c hair my curl clump with ease. No need to shingle . After applying the products I like separating the clumps for volume. The problem is I have been travelling for work a lot so I cannot have a hooded dryer
@@tmcurly Update: I tried it and it worked! Im shook! ive never seen my coils so defined and not a matted mess. I also used the diffuser attachment for the first time. My hair typically clumps after shampoo but gets fluffy after detangling with conditioner. This time I detangled first then washed and conditioned in twists.
I guess I don't understand how this is any different from the Anthony Dickey wash n go method you previously showed us. Seems like it's the same very large amount of gel and the same (long) amount of work. But ok...I'll wait for the follow up video.
I hope those products are by black owned businesses otherwise not good you advertising them at all. We MUST empower our own people when only WE are using such products otherwise ignorance continues to reign. More importantly, what you are missing is the type of oils black 4C hair should use (and other hair types) and that is "humectant" oils. All oils are not equal and some if not a huge amount will just sit on the hair's outer shaft and not absorb. However, humectant oils WILL absorb into the hair and hold moisture or moisturise. Also, how much of that humectant oil you apply would depend on how dry and brittle your hair is, so that means some people may need to apply more than others until the hair texture has softened and feels better. Also a good humectant hair cream would be good. As long as it's working for your hair and you are not spending hours on your hair every time then you've cracked it. See Shanique Butyn's black 4C hair on RU-vid. She and a few alike will amase you, astonish you and surprise you. She is THE wow factor and a few others of sporting great looking black 4C hair. Another topic is wigs. If you have to keep wearing wigs, hiding your natural hair then what's the point of having nice hair!! I'm growing my hair inspired by a few and I'll be damned if I'm going back to wearing wigs or extensions cos that just plays to never able to sport your own natural hair 24/7 everyday for life. Little maintenance is key and you can put your hair in some lovely maintained hair styles rather than the stereotypical boring hair styles and then on the days you can show it off to the world again with little maintenance. But the world should, needs to see that black women can and do have gorgeous hair. C'mon now get the knowledge and watch the right videos and SHARE!!
This is very disturbing. Because a lot of the girls out there can't buy these products. I am thinking of my sisters in Africa for example. But what they have is their butter and oils to take care of their hair. And now you have this method everywhere in RU-vid. What are they suppose to do ? I wish they could have show how we can incorporate oils and butter for better results rather than just saying not to use them.
i think calling it “disturbing” is a stretch. nobody is really forcing people to do it, lol. like you said, it’s just another method. people can still use their butters and oils if they want to.
Well put and a good point to bring to the attention of those who swear that this is the only way to go about doing black girl curls, coils, and kinks...🤔
