▬ 🕐 Difference #1: Charging time ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Theoretically, you can charge faster at a 22 kW wallbox than at an 11 kW wallbox. However, note that there are several factors that influence the charging time. The charging power of the electric car and the charging cable are two of these factors.
► Charging power of the electric car:
If your electric car has a three-phase onboard charger and a maximum charging power of 11 kW, for example, this means that you will not charge faster even with a 22 kW Wallbox.
If you charge your EV at a 22 kW wallbox, for example, and your car only has a charging capacity of 11 kW, you will still not be able to charge faster than 11 kW.
► Charging power of the charging cable:
If you have an electric car with 22 kW AC charging power, a wallbox with a maximum 22 kW charging power but a charging cable that only allows 11 kW charging power, your electric car will only be able to charge at 11 kW.
▬ ⚡ Difference #2: Connection power ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Before you decide on one of the wallboxes, you should check how high the connection power is that is available to you at your house for the charging station. If it is too low, it makes little sense to install a 22 kW wallbox, as it requires 32 amps at maximum charging power. 32 amps at maximum charging power and you also have other consumers in the building that need electricity.
Of course, you can also charge with less power with the 22 kW wallbox, but then charging takes longer.
▬ Difference #3: 22 kW wallbox is downward compatible ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
This means that you can charge with a maximum of 22 kW, but you don't have to. The charging station can also charge at a lower power. With an 11 kW Wallbox, however, you are bound to the maximum charging power of 11 kW.
▬ 🔋 Difference #4: Battery conservation ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The 11 kW wallbox is a little easier on the battery. However, this is hardly noticeable and should therefore not be the decisive factor for your decision.
There are only significant differences in DC charging. If you regularly charge your EV at a DC charging station, i.e. a fast charging station, this is unhealthy for the battery, as the high charging power puts a lot of strain on it.
▬ Difference #5: Registration and authorisation requirements ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
In Germany, for example, you only have to notify the grid operator of a Wallbox with 11 kW, whereas you also have to have a Wallbox with a maximum of 22 kW approved before it can be put into operation.
In Austria, a stationary wallbox must be reported to the electricity grid operator by the electrician, regardless of the connected load, while no registration is required for a mobile charging station.
► Important: Check the legal classification, because there can be differences depending on the wallbox and the country.
The last subtle difference is the price. An 11 kW wallbox is slightly cheaper.
▬ 💶 Difference #6: The price ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The two charging stations are very close to each other. The 11 kW wallbox from go-e, for example, is around 10 euros cheaper than the 22 kW variant.
