Just did a price check on these items in the "Be Ready Bag", between Amazon (where I selected waaaay better versions) and the dollar store (for the tissues, hand sanitizer, ponchos, and water bottles) my total came out to $66.89. That's basically $16 difference to go through and get the items you really want and assemble a better kit yourself. That included getting a solar/handcrank radio with NOA channels, getting a metal tactical flashlight, getting the better 5 year rations, and getting a 10 pack of the mylar emergency blankets instead of the 3. So yeah, you're exactly right on that bag, pretty much a rip off.

The Be Ready Bag can be created yourself. I make my own. I buy items on sale and from Dollar Tree. It does give you an idea as to what you can put in it. I personally created my bags based upon actual experiences throughout my life. Many items I include are things that I wish that I had during an emergency. Learned the hard way sometimes. Good review. Will not doubt help viewers.

@ConcreteComa Axes are supposed to be sharp dude, not delicate knife sharp, but you want it to bite into wood, if you want a splitting maul then the sharpness isn't important, since it's the weight and wedge shape that does the work, but a more general purpose bushcraft axe should have a decent edge.

I put my bag together over about 6 months. Sales, camping stores, our (Aussie) KMart etc, Aldi, food shops etc. Now I've got a pretty decent emergency bag I keep in my car. Didn't cost much more than that pre-made bag and I reckon the quality is way better, plus it has stuff I know I like and works in it. I go through the bag about 2-3 times a year and swap out the food items close to expiry because it's stuff I'd eat anyway (or can eat). Easy.

I'm an older guy and I was surprised that most people have gone to the propane bottles. Back in my camping, fishing days I always used a coleman stove and kept a gallon or two of fuel on hand. A cup of fuel would cook several meals or power a lantern for a nite. Too bulky to carry but great for power outages. After one hurricane we had no power for a week. Sat the coleman two burner stove on the counter top and cooked nice meals the entire week. My fireplace had glass doors so I'd fire up the coleman lantern and place it in the fireplace with the glass doors shut. Lots of light and we didn't have to listen to the noise. I realize there's a big difference between buggin out and staying home but for seniors the options are almost always stay home and give it your best shot at staying alive. Other than the danger of terrorism or roving bands of hungry people my home is self sufficient enough to go for a couple of years.
@lauriestlyon8773

True about the small gas stoves. I have one of the aerosol types as a back up to my main propane stove. In winter my Woodstove is always on and two kettles of water (one washing, one drinking) are always on! Then slowcook a stew all day! As a man of certain years I plan to bug in ...sort of! I live on a steel canal boat. So I move off the canals to a tidal river! There are drawbacks to my plan too! However, in all scenarios you cover what you can and the rest you play the cards as they fall! Would never use this bug out bag.

Agreed sir I'm still pretty young but my papa has the big two burner and I got the small version of the two burner and keep it in my truck to cook lunch on at work and my coworkers always want to use it to cook theirs too haha! We also used ours a lot a couple years ago when a big ice storm hit and knocked out power for a week I just stuck the food out in the ice and we cooked on the stoves had lanterns for night time and only propane device we have is the old Coleman flat faced heater and it kept us from freezing to death along with the old Coleman ten pound sub zero bags he used to use for deer hunting and passed to me I wouldn't trade those old sleeping bags for a pile of gold they're the best compared to anything I've bought today and we found them at a garage sale when I was a kid and they're still in great shape

I'm with you on the Coleman liquid fueled appliances. I have their 3-burner 426D stove plus a single burner 533 and two lanterns plus a catalytic heater. And if I do inherit a supply of propane, I have the converter that will allow me to burn propane in my stove. The bulk (by volume) of 1 gallon of Coleman fuel and 4 propane bottles is about the same. But propane is only 80% as efficient as liquid fuel.

I have a feeling the type of person the Be Ready bag is marketed to is the type of person to buy it, and never open it until they actually needed it, at which point they'd find half the stuff is inadequate or damaged. Better to assemble your own bag, and know what's in it and how to use it, not a fan of these preassembled survival kits as they're usually filled with cheap items.

Given we used to do a lot of camping, I would choose a good quality folding saw over a hatchet, mostly. Don't need a hammer; this is why there are rocks. WalMart's Be Ready Bag? I bought that bag and made some changes. First thing I did was remove the water bottles and add 12 Datrex water pouches that are vacuum sealed together (plastic is NOT GOOD for long term storage). I got rid of that cheap flashlight and threw in a 6 pack of flashlights with batteries that I got at Bass pro for $10. I left the tube tent but also added the SOL emergency shelter. I added a fire starter kit also and a Sawyer squeeze. I keep it in my work van as a GHB.

I stayed in a campsite wilderness area for 14 years illegally... Those small propane tanks are a God send... At the beginning, I knew NOTHING about woodsmanship and plants and knowledge of nature... I used a fire, and I didn't COOK my food and heat things with the propane, but I had a torch attachment for the bottles and ONLY used it to START my wood fire... I had a welders striker to ignite the flame of the torch... A little bit goes a long way and that propane flame will start a fire in rain or snow all the way down to 40 below zero... Lower than that propane freezes in the tank and can not be burned... You must use oil for a fire when it gets that cold... Many have frozen to death in their campers in Colorado because they depended on propane for their heat... What you are saying about those propane bottles is only true if you are going to use ONLY propane for everything... I used it only for starting my fire... Very dependable...In my campsite, it never even got cold enough for ice to form... I learned more and more until I got to a point where I could live indefinitely in the woods carrying ONLY what fits under my arm... A great knowledge I recommend everyone should have...

radradroadbot. True. I keep propane for Bugging IN. Just make sure to use it *outside*.. on a porch or under a tarp.. if it's raining. What I would tuck in a med. bug out bag is a really small Alchohol stove.. (such as a Trangia) that you could store in a cook pot. There is a lot of info on You Tube for making OR buying these very useful, compact alchohol stoves. In a pinch even rubbing alcohol will work for fuel, but marine stove fuel burns best. Check out Trangia stove sites. I think they were designed for the military in .. Sweden?

You could fill the hollow handle of the camp ax with rubber cement (let dry for a few days until solidified, or fill in stages over a few days for best results); leave one inch of space in the hollow handle and pour in bondo (gorilla glue will work too) to fill the rest of the space once the rubber cement has fully cured. Let fully dry and it's ready to use in the field. While it might be heavier, it'll last a heck of a lot longer. So a little modification can add substantial value in this case. If you get the supplies cheap enough, it adds only $5 to $10 extra to your budget depending on your costing and volume of purchase.

Vaughn makes awesome hammers and axes..and those little coleman tanks you dismissed as useless are refillable from large tanks on property ,gas lines behind ovens, as well as from other larger tanks that are hard to carry distancees at speed and will be the last line of defense for warmth and cooking in a shtf situation.and all you needed was one little tank...cut the line on a gas generator and attach that useless little propane bottle and youve got 110 volts of electricity for roughly 6 hours or more depending on load to charge a car battery. do the same on a carburated truck and and your off to find some shelter and food but on wheels..all thanks to one or two useless little coleman propane tanks

Right, we take them when in extreme cold to use for small heaters. That's usually at 15°F or below, I just use a candle lantern by UCO any other colder trip that has nights at or below freezing. These suckers are awesome for the price, candles last forever and never had any fire hazards and no CO emissions to vent out with the condensation, it keeps that at bay as well.

Hey DFS. Weight and size is a serious factor to consider when creating and optimizing your survival kit, but if you had a car to work with, with all it's space and the opportunities it provides for shelter, safety and random utilities like pulling stuff with great force, what more would you include considering the greatly increased storage? How would you balance more rations and aditional gadgets or backups for the ones in there already. What car would you pick? I imagine a forest/ jungle or very rough terrain environment would not work with a car, but what about vast grassland and lightly forested plains like where I live, would a van or an off-road car be worth it, or are you still better off on foot? Gas would probably be an issue but considering all the advantages of a car, even if most of the additional storage was taken up by extra gas cans, would it still be worth it?
