No campground at Walnut Canyon . Sunset Crater ( closed because of fire) up highway 89 has a national forest campground next to the visitor center but across the highway is free national forest camping. No amenities at all.. Wipatki ruins are still open but can only be reached by North entrance up 89 . Thanks for the great video as usual.

In my "next" life, I shall visit this canyon when I am much younger and traverse the trail. My husband and I have been twice, and I got as far as you did ... each time. AND, it took me a lot longer to get back to the top. Durn burn it!! Breathing is my biggest problem, followed by ability to walk with a cane.

Hey Russ, good to re-visit Walnut Canyon with you. Man, those cicadas are really loud! I've done the Island Trail a couple of times--the hike back up is definitely a workout. I finished my own cross-country roadtrip a couple of weeks ago--it's great to be able to get back out there virtually with you. Happy trails!

Not only are there a lot of people on the highways they are still driving fast enough one would think gas was back to $1 25. I drove from Farmington to Page last week at 55. The savings with the slower speeds came in right at $14, in 263 miles!

Hey, a HEAT WAVE ! Then go up in the Mountains : North Rim of the Grand Canyon or Mount Lemmon in Arizona, Mount Charleston in Nevada, Yosemite or Mount San Jacinto in California, etc. I'm sure you know of a few more elevated spots in your area. I've never been to Walnut Canyon but I liked Sunset Crater and Meteor Crater a lot when I was near Flagstaff. Very nice video, keep up the good work, Russ ! RICHARD

Not necessary to hike down to bottom. Go down one level about 150 steps and walk around the interior wall of Canyon. Approx 10 ft wide path. (Children to the inside) . No rails, 500 feet down. You'll walk past hundreds of very small caves where the ceilings are still black from the fires of the occupants. You can see hundreds if caves opposite canyon wall on several levels.

90 degree heat at 7,000' is no joke, even for fit folks. Smart to take the scenic upper trail and save the hike into the canyon for when it is much cooler. Neat place and what a glimpse of what life was like there so long ago. Travel safe. Pete - KI7LIL

Good episode. We stopped there years ago. Seems like that was the year is was 114 in Phoenix when we stopped for gas. Late July or early August. Anyway I don't recall the temp at Walnut Canyon but did the trail down and I thought I was about to heat stroke out. I don't remember if we made it all the way to the bottom. Never again in summer, maybe April or October next time...heh

Great video and glad you were able to return and see more of it. Question - you said a couple of times that there is camping at the monument. We checked the NPS website and it stated that there was no camping onsite but did list some recommendations within the area. Some were not very close. Is this a change?

Don't forget to visit the impact site just east of Flag... Gosh, the lava fields, there's so much in and around Flag. Enjoy and try to get out of there before winter comes! I still think you need to visit Mogollon Rim, the Clark trail - but be careful there! You can fall off the edge of the road quite easily, nearly a half mile down to the bottom! If you ever get into Strawberry, there's a tiny restaurant there (hopefully still there) that had an awesome strawberry pie!
