Hey David, Jeff's mentality of putting actual knowledge ahead of a degree is pretty awesome. I was just hired by Cisco a month ago with only certifications, learned from your videos. Self education is very powerful and Cisco knows it.

Nice job! I am supposed to graduate next year with an undergrad in Computer Science. Do you mind sharing what types of certifications you obtained? Even with a CS degree, I feel like I'll need more than that if I want to break into Networking or Cyber Security.

I’m really digging these interviews, David. A lot of great stuff here and I’m happy to know that I’m not the only Poli Sci major at Cisco. One thing I would add is to be mindful of your facial expressions while doing remote interviews with video calls. I’ve interviewed people who wore chucks, jeans, a t-shirt. There’s no concern with that from myself. I’ve recommended people who did terribly in the interview based on tangible items (did they get the question right or not); however, they carried themselves well and maintained a positive attitude while displaying an ability to learn quickly.

As i am pursuing graduation which is non technical. By seeing this video, it made me clear that, there is no mandatory required technical graduation for networking job Or other IT helpdesk. You just need valuable knowledge and certification. Thank you @David for this video, it really motivates me for moving ahead in networking field.

Great video! Working at Cisco is the best thing in the world! I got in by doing a whole year of internship in their CX Academy and getting 3 certifications, (CCNA Data Center, R&S and CCNP R&S) also I worked as a TAC engineer in the Data Center Switching team, and I'm about to end the internship in 2 months (I started August last year) and they offer me already a full time job as an NCE (Network Consulting Engineer) for Data Center in SAN/UCS, if anyone is reading and it's about to finish college or just finished it, try to land an internship in Cisco, they'll give you everything to make you the best and probably give you a full time job just like me. BTW Cisco is my first job, I literally started in the internship the last semester of my colleague degree, so I really encourage everyone to try to land an internship in Cisco, it'll open you all the gates.

Sir, I've around 6 years of experience in Desktop support. But dicey about the Networking field as they are considering me as a fresher. So, should I go for the fresher profile as a Network engineer or not. In fact not getting proper opening regarding network engineer as the company required similar field experience for the same.

Hi David i am from Afghanistan and i'm a drop out school and now i am a CCNA certified and half way to getting my CCNP my question is should i be worried for not having any kinda degree or is it still a hope for getting a job just with certs???
@davidbombal
@davidbombal 5 лет назад
I think this will depend on the company, the role and the country. In some countries like the USA, they will require a degree for some roles, but this is changing: www.cnbc.com/2018/08/16/15-companies-that-no-longer-require-employees-to-have-a-college-degree.html - in other parts of the world a certification like CCIE would be much more important for some roles than a degree. I suggest you do some market research by looking at job sites in the specific country you are applying and seeing what potential employers are looking for. The answer as always is it depends. I think certifications are very valuable.

@jeffmclaughlin6612
@jeffmclaughlin6612 5 лет назад
You are in the hardest spot. Getting the first job. You can't get a job without experience and you can't get experience without a job. It wasn't easy for me and it's not for a lot of people. For those in colleges and universities, there are often opportunities, such as work on the university network or internships. Sometimes you have to take a job in a related field, like desktop support, just to get into IT. Then you can make friends with the network people and try to work your way in. Remember that the first few jobs often aren't the best, but you are working your way up. Best of luck.
