ASUS is back with another Zenfone to show us all the small phones don't have to lack features or battery life. With the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, killer cameras, and a compact design, will this year's Zenfone impress Bell or are small phones unnecessary with Flipping phones becoming more common?

I'm glad there's tech content creators talking about smaller phones being released because it allows people to voice their opinions on them. I really wish there were more 4 -5 inch size phones. A desire of mine is to see small, single camera modules and minimal designs come back too. Sometimes you just need a device for messaging, browsing, and very occasional entertainment that you can forget is sitting in your pocket, works smoothly and takes OK pictures. In other words, older designs with new OS and slightly better performance.

Ya, it really sucks because I prefer android but if you care about size ios is your only option right now. The zenphone nine had a lot of problems and Asus doesn’t ever support their products that long. At least you get long term support with ios for all of the negatives it has. The update policy has been their achilles heel since the market started shifting to more than 2 years of support. It is nice to see they upped the security patch support to 4 years, but 3 years or 3 major os updates would have been welcome too. And I already do run the thing at just 720p res and UI scaled up as well as font zoomed. It's literally useless if you want to browse with it. Note 3 was just about right. Exactly the same width BTW. I also bought my zenfone 8 for € 500, and who knows, maybe the 10 drops as deep on next black Friday. But even if it doesn't drop as much, I'd say 2 years longer in security updates may cost a little extra. Our phones are almost out of official updates, being able to procrastinate the installation of lineage os a little longer would be nice. Backing up an unrooted phone for the reinstall (or rooting) is no fun... If you are even technical enough to do a reinstall and keep your phone secure in the first place. 2 more years of secure use for € 100-200, take my money.

Exactly. Via the Android toolkit library, Google supports apps on each release of Android for at least seven years after that version came out. As Asus continues to increase the price on the Zenfone it makes it less of an attractive proposition. The S23 is volumetrically smaller (although a couple of mm wider), is lighter, has a bigger screen and is more widely supported. The Zenfone has a headphone jack and larger battery. As the price gap decreases (here in Australia at least) between the two brands it's harder to justify the Asus IMHO. My son just bought a Flip3 on sale for the same price the Zenfone 8 was available for at the time with the same SOC and I would have made the same choice if I were in his shoes (I currently have the Zenfone 8 myself).
@ChippTheFox
@ChippTheFox Год назад
I don't understand the logic here, yes the s23 is slightly smaller, and I mean /slightly/. But you're literally saying that you're willing to pay the exact same price for a Samsung and get less features. What.
@microwrx
@microwrx Год назад
@@ChippTheFox The Asus has a headphone jack, a larger battery, a bigger selfie camera and supports wifi 7. The Samsung is smaller (overall), lighter, has a larger screen, Victus 2, an extra rear telephoto camera, a barometer and USB3.2, not to mention you can buy accessories for it EVERYWHERE. So no, not less features at all. However for a decent price difference the Zenfone has been an attractive alternative, the whole reason I bought the Zenfone 8 in the first place and the Nokia 8 long before that, a premium SOC for nowhere near as much money. As the price gap shrinks if Asus kept the feature set growing at a proportionate rate the value proposition would remain, however I don't think it has. That being said the 'for the same price' was comparing my Zenfone 8 to my sons Flip3 and like I said, IMHO. At least the Flip3 can do VoWifi, My Zenfone 8 can't, not here anyway. I really like the Zenfone 10, but if the price of the Zenfone 9 is anything to go by, it's just not going to be worth it for what in reality is being able to have a headphone jack. Either way, we don't have to agree, we all value things differently.

About the "delayed launch" for the apps: the phone does have some battery saving options that prevent apps from running in background and sometimes kill the process, I found that very neat considering that the milisseconds to open an app aren't so important as longevity of the battery. Zenfone 10 has a lot of tweaking and customization to do on system preferences and I'm glad i can do it, sure it takes some time but when you're all set up it's awesome!
