Want to change the world? Start by being brave enough to care | Cleo Wade

Artist and poet Cleo Wade recites a moving poem about being an advocate for love and acceptance in a time when both seem in short supply. Woven between stories of people at the beginning and end of their lives, she shares some truths about growing up (and speaking up) and reflects on the wisdom of a life well-lived, leaving us with a simple yet enduring takeaway: be good to yourself, be good to others, be good to the earth. "The world will say to you, 'Be a better person,'" Wade says. "Do not be afraid to say, 'Yes.'"

“Start by being a BETTER listener..” because, more often than not, the world needs just that

Soooo many people are just waiting for the chance to respond, thinking about what they'll say next, rather than focusing on the person speaking to them. It's sad really.

metalhead2508 I don't think you do have to do that. Surely the ideal is to listen to the other person's point of view before forming your response?

Feminist have to stop exploiting our language. What it means to be brave is to do what you know is best in spite of your fears. If you care because you perceive yourself to share in the victimhood then that's not brave but merely selfishness.Your child is an extension of yourself therefore is a form of selfishness Caring =/=Being good. You don't know what it means to be good.

The main problem that prevents this is tribalism. People say they value truth, love, and justice, but in practice, they often value & apply it only inside their own group. And they ignore those values when dealing with people outside of their group. Additionally, if such values interfere with the identity they have created for themselves, they'll ignore those values in favor of their own pride and vanity.
@adrianjuarez8468
@adrianjuarez8468 2 года назад
Yeah, that's true my friend. We all need to be more humble with our own identities, because there may be other values worth considering that are probably much better than the ones we already have. Regarding the first paragraph, sadly we are constrained by Dunbar's number, so we can't really care about more than 150 people if we don't first create a story or purpose that unites us all.

There is a sense of dread at all times, the environment is degrading, politicians are not caring about the majority, the disparity between rich and poor is increasing, more access to media allows constant negative news to bombard us with more events even though we live in the safest time in history. We live in an age of scarcity, a culture of never enough. People are convinced this is due to the new narcissistic epidemic as it characteristics are associated with a pattern of behaviours that include grandiosity, a pervasive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Every level of severity in this diagnosis is underpinned by shame. This behaviour is originated from the shame based fear of being ordinary. The fear of never being enough to be noticed, to be loveable, to belong or cultivate a sense of purpose. We have cultural messages everywhere reminding us that an ordinary life is a meaningless life. Never good enough, never thin enough, never successful enough, never extraordinary enough. Fill in your never _____ enough. Reality tv, celebrity culture and extended use of social media can absorb this message and develop a skewed sense of the world. Ordinary = inadequate is the message. 50% of the population is considered average and it shouldn't be considered a bad label. These thoughts and behaviours ultimately cause more pain and lead to lead to more disconnection. We are viewing people in a filtered lens especially when their motivations of not being enough are the activators of publishment alongside spending less time face to face with human interaction and ultimately connection. Constantly Comparing ourselves, marriages and lives to unattainable, media visions of perfection. Scarcity is in the language we use. First waking thought is 'never enough sleep', next is 'I don't have much time' true or not, the not enough is integrated automatically before thinking or examining it. We start the day off feeling already behind, already losing, already inadequate and lacking something and end the the day with thoughts of what we didn't get or get done that day. This is the mindset most of us live in. Scarcity is the "never enough" problem. The treatment of this in through empathy and understanding and not to call out people on their inadequacies and smallness. This shame prone culture (suffering from worthiness) is fractured by disengagement. Unlike the past, we don't seem to stand together as a collective as much. Lots of incidents have torn at our sense of safety, closing ourselves off to vulnerability. We don't come together to heal. It is a very every man for himself culture which dynamic is prevalent in our work, family, school and community culture. SHAME COMPARISON DISENGAGEMENT. Brene brown (one of the most popular Ted talk videos) emphasis theses points. Please, stop the shame and extend your empathy out tomore people including yourself. Smiles to all of you :)

Sandwich Party, thank you for sharing this. It sums up concisely what I feel and experience daily. It helps to see someone else put it into words and validate it even further beyond my personal experience and knowledge. The only way to fix this is to live our own lives (and raise our kids) in such a way as to be strong and clear about what is truly important in this life and be strong enough to stand up to those that adhere to the impossible "culture of not enough." Personally, I don't believe that this "not enough" mindset is sustainable. Just like the economy and most other things, eventually there will be a cycle end in our society, but I doubt that I will see it in my lifetime. Hopefully what emerges will be a more realistic and appreciative version of our culture.

But only some talk honestly. Most people use empty terms like "change" and or "good" not realizing that nobody is in actual agreement because they all have their own version of what that means but have never spoken clearly enough to each other to be able to tell. Everybody wants what they believe to be good but the disagreement is regarding what actually is the best.

@TheDefewl
@TheDefewl 6 лет назад
For an answer to this: I did this, I cared for everyone, I cared for people that didn't give a good damn about me. This will maybe create peace at first...but hey maybe you can't save or care for everyone becuse you know sooner or later maybe you meet people that will take advantage of you. That is how the world is made, at least my psychologist told me this, and yes I meet a psychologist all because of this. There are us, we who care. Then there are those who take and use the care you are willing to give. In short I'm gotten almost depressed and what many of you will call a close to a burnout for giving to many fu*ks. So a warning while you see this, it maybe sound like the world we want to have, I want it too, but it it's hard. Remember to care for yourself as much as you care for others.

Some of our most valuable lessons are taught in our darkest of times. You can't do everything but you can do something. Having the emotional intelligence to understand someone isn't the enemy. Be understanding and empathetic. Find truth beyond the way things seem. Ask all the questions. We are more than our mistakes and to learn things we have to learn to forgive ourselves first. We cannot overcome what we ignore. We are all essentially connected. A small start will go a long way. If you see you don't qualify, how do you make yourself qualifiable. Talking about solutions and becoming part of the solution shows that it's never too late to start. You are deserving of the fruitions that will come out of being empathetic. Don't be afraid to tackle it steps at a time.

Honestly, colossal incidences are too big to our minds, also we got job and schools to think about more. However, her message is so lucid for everyone but it is farfetched to love everyone and help everyone. You may also do good to someone and receive an abysmal way of treating,but her message by starting to do something small to make an enormous metamorphosis in the world. I really like this woman as she is talking with confidence and calm which is something rare to find those kind of people. Thanks alot Ted talk!

While change is taking place, we have those who not equipped enough to see their way, who think things will stay as they wish it to be because of not having vision to see how things going to be. Is it stupidity, or immaturity that make a force of people to work hard to not see. That put roadblocks on the future that coming to be. Throughout the world countries that opened their eyes to see, understand how they use to be. Who now learn the compromising system they trying to spread to their neighbor so the benefits will be helpful for both sides to see. People in the same continent began to see that each country good that is on their lands can benefit each country growth first before any other countries. It make no sense for a body that functional, meaning continent, separate like the rest of the part are dead. Meaning to ignore what the other have to offer, who go other places outside their continent to be treated in the worst way. How do a country that is split in the middle, with both side are active, allow a outside country tell them how to treat their brother. Where both side have valuable information to share with each other to help their country to survive without bring any harm to each other, or anyone else. See modern technology bringing in changing times, and the old has to change to keep up with what about to go down. If not they will be a thing of the past that will be in the history book about not being able to change with time. There is no such thing anymore of bully power because the risk is to high for it to survive, from the outside, as while as the inside. No one country people will agree with what bully power do, when the information is spreading through their country of all the things being done. Where the people will weight the information to see if their country a bully, or a victim, that other country will never understand the decisions they make they feel is right for their country, and the people. Something the sellouts will never understand because they already sold out their right to have a voice in anything.

I have an idea that we could all step out of this "reality" and begin to create the new on by raising all the data in the world up for everyone to see. Create a template where its easily ingestible. And teach everyone everything. So if they want to be passionate about what ever subject it is we could than duplicate that behavior and advance that field. The main focus of the educational portion would be future planning for humanity. No money involved. We are the power source to every idea realistically right. If we were to take the man power and direct it towards good. What would tomorrow look like.

I am at a point where I can no longer care or give, because it is just too painful. If I continue to care and give as much as I already have, I will die. The suffering of the innocent, and the domination of evil ignorance, have planted in Mmy heart a time-bomb of infinite pain and misery. To care, means: that I actually have to care about the fact that our world is dying right now, that I have to carry the pain of a trillion lives lost in war and imperialism, that I have to feel the sorrow and loss for countless lives never given a chance for more, and that I have to live with the understanding that people cannot escape the endlessly tormenting prison complex they have built for themselves. I cannot live while feeling all that. I cannot live Mmy life while feeling other people's pain, because I know too much about the world; I know too much about how people's lives are just wasted for nothing but empty promises and arrogance. I can't care anymore, because Mmy caring will change nothing except Mmy will to live.

Quite a religious message, I didn't expect this. One of the principles I think is just below the surface of this talk is to reject pride/arrogance, it is the most important principle shared between religious teachings. If you look at any wrong doing in the world or that you have taken part in, there is some form of pride underneath it.
